Nehemiah needed to build the wall quickly for security and to get the wall completed before anyone could appeal with the Persian King.  Many teams were assigned so all areas would be covered for the rebuilding.  The teams are motivated thru self-interest.  Each team was concerned about areas around their home.  This motivation would allow them to rebuild properly and if the enemy came they would protect their home.

Q1. (Nehemiah 3) Why does Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly?

Time was of the essence due to vulnerability to military attacks. There was also the possibility of the King withdrawing permission to rebuild if pressured from obstructionists. (Sounds like  2017 re: building a wall to protect America's borders against attacks, terrorists infiltration,  drug smuggling, unlimited illegal immigrants absorbing resources...128 billion dollars annually)

Why does he assign so many teams?

With many teams working on different sections at the same time the workload was spread out and accomplished much more quickly. (51 days!!!) It also created unity among the people all working in tandem for a common goal which would benefit the entire nation.

What motivates these teams?

The destroyed walls and gate were a disgrace and a reproach to the people (Neh. 2:17) This was their homeland and the visible destruction was a reminder of their corporate sin, and the need to repent and the promise of return to their land. They had a strong leader in Nehemiah who was adamant about the task and a great organizer and encourager.

What kinds of problems would Nehemiah need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously?

We can only imagine this rag tag group of people in the mix: locals, and new ones, undisciplined, unsettled by coming back to view the destruction...enough to stymie the average person. (I can relate to the last part. I just prayed with a friend who just got permission to go in a group this morning for the first time since their homes and entire neighborhood were burned to ashes in Santa Rosa, and since I've seen the pictures on T.V. of what they'll find, I felt suffocated just thinking of the paralysis and grief and despair they'll face. So that entered into this answer for Nehemiah and his group.)

Nehemiah would have been tasked with getting permission and letters from the King to proceed and to gather the materials (letter to Asaph keeper of the Kings forest for timber for the gate beams for the temple, city walls and Nehemiah's house Neh 2:8), I'm imagining as captives in Babylon they had to acquire weapons and tools, food, and other necessities of life and building. He had to work with personalities and choose "captains" wisely over those who thought they should be in charge. He would have had to nudge them on and to encourage them in their work...possibly even to demonstrate how to accomplish the work, while keeping a lookout for attacks, and to deal with Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem the agitators and obstructionists who mocked and ridiculed and protested the progress. (again, this sounds like America today! The left who prefers Communism, godlessness and lawlessness to "One nation under God indivisible and with justice for all",  and upholding the Constitution and the rule of law" with constant mocking, ridicule, protests, fake news, and refusal to confirm appointees for Government positions. Only 172 to date, whereas  previous administrations at this same point in time had 359 and 376 confirmations in place.)

Nehemiah built the walls quickly in order to keep the enemies out of the way and to keep the ones against him from being able to complain to the king. He assigns a lot of teams so that he can complete the walls quickly. It also makes a big project like that look small one. There would be a lot of problems, for instance logistics, materials, tools, and managers.

It is great to be back.

Nehemiah had to build the wall quickly because he did not want the enemies of Jerusalem to sabotage the completion of the wall.  He did not want the enemies to appeal to the king of Mesopotamia to stop the construction as was done before.

Nehemiah knew that the wall had to be built as quickly as possible.  There were many teams so that by allotting different portion of the wall to a team it could be built quickly.  This helped with the team leaders overseeing what was allotted them than for Nehemiah himself overseeing so large a project.   This allowed no one team to be overwhelmed with the constructing an extremely large portion of the wall. The more teams there were, the faster the completion of the wall.

The teams are motivated since they all wanted to see their forefathers ruined Jerusalem rebuilt.  Many teams were responsible for the construction of portions of the wall surrounding where they lived so their rulers pooled their resources.  We saw that in some cases even  women worked on the wall. They also knew that the wall would make their city and keep them more secure.

It had to have been a huge task for Nehemiah to oversee 41 teams.  He had to recruit a leader to head a team, maybe one who had funds to recruit others to work on his team as well as to fund the supplies for  the wall.  He had to be a mediator of members within a team.  He most certainly had to solve logistic problems, ensuring that materials, funding were available to each team to complete its section of the wall.   .

Q1. (Nehemiah 3) Why does Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly? Why does he assign so many teams? What motivates these teams? What kinds of problems would Nehemiah need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously?

The walls needed to be built quickly before any of the protesters, obstructionists, would have time to try to put a stop to it like they did previously. He assigns many teams because there were many walls to the city. This would allow for the walls to be built as quickly as possible. The sooner they rebuilt, the safer they would feel.

Nehemiah reminds the people of the dangers of living without protection around their city and homes. How vulnerable they were for enemy attacks. He encourages them by reminding them of how they have been treated with disgrace and affront. This was their opportunity to live with honor, without fear of invasion, both protecting their homes and their land.

Working with so many teams at a time involves hard work. He would have different personalities to deal with, different views of doing things, lots of challenges.

Q1. (Nehemiah 3) Why does Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly? Why does he assign so many teams? What motivates these teams? What kinds of problems would Nehemiah need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously?

The walls needed to be put up quickly for several reasons, one being that Artaxerxes had already been convinced once declared a halt to the construction, and there was always the chance of being approached by the enemies of the Jews, using any possible means of convincing him yet another time of reverting on the order, a possible danger being that if he reversed it a second time it could have been a subject of ridicule for the king, something he could have taken personally and attacked the Jews militarily with overwhelming force, therefore it would be imperative that they be completed with haste. Another reason for haste is because if enemies like Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem decided to attack they would have only limited time to get defendable barriers in place.

The reason for so many teams was to get the wall going up in sections which would be easily joined plus it would be easier to break the job up into “specialty” units, that is, units doing what they do best, plus, a spirit of competition would come into play, each team trying to see who could do not only the fastest but the best job.

Of course, there would be problems with an undertaking of such size like morale, whiners, and

security just to name a few. That, in itself would be a sizable job.

Q1. (Nehemiah 3) Why does Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly? Why does he assign so many teams? What motivates these teams? What kinds of problems would Nehemiah need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously.

it is necessary for Nehemiah to build the walls quickly so that the enemy will not be able to organize a resistance to destroy his work as they had done before. This was done by organizing a number of teams, 41 and all, so that these could work simultaneously in support of each other.

the motivations off this teams would be for their religious spirit. Jerusalem is a center part of their religion and in order to develop that religion properly it is necessary to have the temple building secured. In order to do this it is necessary to build a wall. Nehemiah would have many problems to overcome. He would have to organize instruct and enthused of the population to work on the project. The really the total number of people in New Jerusalem was actually quite small in comparison to a modern city of today. There would be problems in disputes that would need to be ironed out, Nehemiah must have been a good organizer. It would be necessary to have the teams all working at the same time so that one the work could be done faster and secondly to enable the city to have protection from its enemies.

Q1. (Nehemiah 3)
Why does Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly?
Why does he assign so many teams?
What motivates these teams?
What kinds of problems would Nehemiah need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously?

The walls had to be built quickly as they were vulnerable to any attack. Besides the walls that were in ruins the city had about nine gates making the city open to people getting in and out. There was much opposition and to rebuild Jerusalem was seen as a threat to the Samaritans who had been in control of the area since Judah’s exile. They felt that they would lose control of the land with all the exiles returning and they would, therefore, oppose securing the city. This is such a huge project and it required much planning and it needed to be subdivided into smaller projects that could be managed more easily. Nehemiah did all this as he had 41 different sub-tasks involved. Being such a daunting task reminds me of how do you eat an elephant? Also various experts in their own field necessitated many different teams. As for motivation; there was a spiritual renewal. Nehemiah had a vision and shared it with enthusiasm thereby inspiring all. He also climbed in and helped with the physical work – leading by example. Another motivation was using people to repair sections of the wall close to their own homes. He must have encountered many problems. Besides the opposition from the Samaritans, and the need to build quickly, he had to source all the materials needed. Some of the people fear for their safety and may be easily discouraged. Even then, all the existing rubble had to be first removed. Think of all the different leaders with their different personalities that are involved. A mammoth task only achievable with the help of the Lord!

He needs to build the walls quickly before appeals by their enemies can be made to officials.

The work goes much faster when teams are working together.

The motivation is honor of Jerusalem lost when destroyed.

Problems could be supplies, personalities, enemies.

Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly because of security reasons,  the more delay in the project would give the enemy time to build forces against them. He assigns so many teams in order to make the work more manageable.  They are motivate because they wanted the walls built and they wanted to keep at bay the enemy. The kinds of problems that Nehemiah would need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously range from personality clashes to insufficient material for labor.

Why does Nehemiah need to build the walls quickly? Because of security. The city needed immediate security. A years-long wall construction process would have given many opportunities for military attacks by Jerusalem’s enemies. A quick construction gives the enemy only a narrow window of time to attack, and Nehemiah’s heavy guard forestalls such an attack until the wall is complete.

Forestalling Appeals. Jerusalem’s enemies have a history of stopping wall repair by appeals to the Persian King (Ezra 4:5-23; 5:1-17). With a shorter construction period, there isn’t enough time to send a message to Mesopotamia and then get back a reply before the wall is fully repaired. At that point, any order to cease repair is moot.

Why does he assign so many teams? So that the project doesn’t seem as overwhelming. Because the work to be done was a lot.

What motivates these teams? The blessings God had granted to Nehemiah. Nehemiah had told them about the gracious hand of God upon him and what the King said to him. They did not also want the sections of the wall close to their home to fall under attack. Nehemiah explained to them to understand the advantages of a completed wall and a secure city.

What kinds of problems would Nehemiah need to solve with so many teams working simultaneously? To keep them encouraged of the God’s good deeds. To set a personal example of constant preparedness. Enemies and Security. He had to assign half his workforce to defense. This slowed completion, but was necessary. Managing defense is a complex task.

Leadership – Each team needs instructions in how to move and set huge stores.

Material – This involved ordering timber from far places. As everything needed to be on site before construction began.

Nehemiah had to get his teams to work quickly to get the job completed because of the threats from his enemies all around him, he was also afraid that his enemies may approach the king again to try and get him to stop the work.
By having 41 teams Nehemiah was making the huge job more manageable. Each team had responsibility to provide funds for their section. Some repaired the sections outside their own homes to ensure the safety of themselves and their families. Others involved their children and got them working as well. In this way no one was overwhelmed by the enormity of the task.

With so many teams involved, Nehemiah has to make arrangements about security so as they worked they had their weapons beside them in case of attack. He also had the responsibility of making sure those working had the proper materials for the job, He would keep them encouraged by telling them that God was helping them and blessing them in their efforts.
