  1. Q2. (John 1:26-27) Why did John baptize? What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing? He was preparing people for the coming of the Lord through repentance and baptism. He called them a brood of vipers (snakes) and said that they couldn't just say they were children of Abraham. They had to bear fruit worthy of repentance. Most of waht he said they had to do had to do with money. Luke 3:7-14 says: "So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, 'You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. 9Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.' 10"And the crowds were questioning him, saying, 'Then what shall we do?' 11And he would answer and say to them, 'The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.' 12And some tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, ;Teacher, what shall we do?' 13And he said to them, 'Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.' 14Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, 'And what about us, what shall we do?' And he said to them, 'Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.” What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized? It meant a totally changed life.
  2. Q1. (John 1:19-23) Why do you think John the Baptist was being hassled by the religious leaders from Jerusalem? He was drawing large crowds. He was the son of Zechariah, a high priest, but didn't follow in the same line as the established priesthood. He wasn't following their protocol. He was invading their territory. What were they afraid of? They were afraid of change from the way things had always been. How did John understand his own mission? He saw himself as the Voice of one crying in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord. How much conflict do you think could be expected from John's mission? Much because it went against everything they had known and approved as being from God.
  3. Q5. (John 1:18) What does it mean that Jesus is the "Only God" or the "Only Begotten God"? It means that Jesus is God. Does the Apostle John seem to make a distinction between God the Father and God the Son? Yes. He says that Jesus is at the Father's right hand, but he also says that Jesus is God. What does all this mean for our understanding of the Trinity? It confirms it because there are three distinct Persons, the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit, but only one God. Jesus prayed that we would be one as He and the Father are one so that the world would come to know Him. This is a mystery that only the Holy Spirit can reveal to us. We can't understand it with our carnal minds.
  4. Q4. Becoming Flesh Q4. (John 1:14) Why is the idea of God “becoming flesh” so important to the basis of the Christian faith? God had to become flesh because He had to make the covenant with Himself. No person could keep a covenant with God. Man always broke it. So God had to become man to keep the covenant. When we are in Christ we have kept the covenant. When we try to keep the covenant outside of Christ we always fail. What would Christ's life, crucifixion, and resurrection mean if he were only pretending to "become flesh"? We would not be reconciled to God which was the whole purpose of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The word of the devil would not have been destroyed which is what Jesus came to do by reconciling us to God our Father. In what ways have you personally experienced his grace? Too many to mention here. We are to reign in life through His abundance of grace and His gift of rigthteousness. In what ways has his truth changed your life from what it was? I went from darkeness to light. I went from death to life. I came to know God and Jesus whom He sent, which is eternal life.
  5. Q3 (John 1:12-13) What does it mean to "receive" Jesus? It means to recognize His authority and submt to His authority. What does it imply to "believe in" Jesus? It means to put our total trust in Him and commit ourselves completely to Him. What is the spiritual relationship to God of those who receive and believe in Jesus? They are given the right to become childfren of God. Of those who do not? They don't receive the right to become sons of God.
  6. Q2. (John 1:7-8) What did it mean that John was sent to "testify" to the light? He pointed people to Jesus. In what sense are you put here with the purpose of "testifying" to the light? We should point people to Jesus. In John 1:35, John directed two of the disciples to Jesus. They followed Jesus. Jesus asked what they wanted. They asked Jesus where He was staying. Jesus said, 'Come and see.' In John 1:43, Jesus called Philip to follow Him. Philip then told Nathaniel about Jesus. Nathaniel asked if anything good could come out of Nazareth. Philip said 'Come and see.' Philip took Nathaniel to Jesus. In John 4:29, the woman at the well told the people of the town, 'Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?' The woman at the well evangelized an entire town simply by giving her brief testimony of her encounter with Jesus and then inviting them to Come and see Him for themselves How are you doing in this regard? Right now not very well. This bible study is helping me to get back to the simplicty of Christ in order to do this. What happened to John the Baptist? He got his head chopped off. What might happen to you if you testify clearly? One time a man told me and another woman that he was supposed to be our head. If we didn't make him our head God would never give us another one. As I prayed, God gave me the scripture where John the Baptist had His head chopped off. Jesus told me, If you get your head chopped off it's not a problem. You have another head. I am your head. That man was not amused by that. One thing that stops evangelization is our submission to man. If the woman at the well would have submitted to the religious leaders or even the disciples she would have never evangelized an entire town. I made a tragic mistake and submitted to a pastor and saw the Holy Spirit go into the earth of my heart. K lost many years and much money because of this mistake. What might happen to the people to whom you testify? Hopefully they will accept the invitation to Come and see Jesus.
  7. Q1. (John 1:1-3) According to the Apostle John, is Jesus fully God? Yes. John 1:1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. What does it mean that Jesus is the "Word"? It means that Jesus is the Word of God who created all things in the beginning. John 1:2-3 say, He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. What does this say about him and his ministry? It means He has a creative ministry. God spoke light into the darkness and created things that were good. I think of how God said that life and death are in the power of the tongue. Jesus did creative miracles. Many things came to mind about our words, but James 3 came to mind the most. Jesus had a creative ministry but then He passed the baton to us His church. On the Day of Pentecost, tongues of fire fell on the 120 in the upper room. They came out praising God in all languages. God inhabits the praises of His people. Isaiah said that he was a man of unclean lips living among a people with unclean lips. An angel took a coal of fire and touched his lips to cleanse them. Snakes were released when they murmured and complained. They had to look at the snake on the pole, representing Jesus, to be healed. I am putting James 3 here because it shows how our tongues can be used for God or for the enemy. Jesus commended the centurion for his faith because He said, Only say the word and my servant will be healed. Our words create for good or for evil. God said that Adam and Eve were very good. He told them not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The enemy said, 'Did God really say?' James 3: 1Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. 3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. Two Kinds of Wisdom 13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. 17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
  8. Q4. (John 3:8) What does Jesus' reference to "the wind" teach us about people who have been born of the Spirit? You can't control the Spirit just as you can't control the wind. The children of God are led by the Spirit of God. I believe we have lsot this in the cuirch. We have our plans and programs. We are led more by man than the Holy Spirit. If you are led by the Holy Spirit many times you are thought as being rebellious. God filled me with the Holy Spirit in two faith churches and by a Catholic preist in a Baptist convention center. Later I tried to do what I thought was the right thing and tried to be in one church. I totally quenched the Holy Spirit when I did this - saws Him go into the earth of my heart. "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God." (Rom. 8:14) The Israelites were led by the Spirit of God into the wilderness. They were led by the Holy Sirit in all of their travels. They only moved when the Holy Spirit moved. If He didn't move, they didn't move. Moses prayed that the presence of God would go with them. The presence of God went with them. But the Holy Spirit led them. They didn't lead the Holy Spirit. "By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night." (Exod. 13:21) "In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels. (Exod. 40:36-38) When the Israelites went into the Promised Land, they were led by the Spirit again. "After three days the officers went throughout the camp, giving orders to the people: 'When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it." (Josh. 3:2-4) The people had never been that way before. They had to follow the ark, the presence of God, or the Holy Spirit. When we are born again, we haven't been that way before. We are children of God, born of the Spirit. We need to be led by the Holy Spirit instead of us trying to lead the Holy Spirit which we can't. This reminds me of my journey. The top neurosurgeons gave up on me. God pulled them away and sat me in His presence in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel which represents 'The Tabernace.' I was filled by the Holy Spriit and led by the Holy Spirit until I made the tragic mistake of submitting to man. I saw the Holy Spriit go into the earth of my heart. I creid for years. I spent many years and money going to the best Christian conferences only to have God show me through a dream that I was totally lost. He brought me back to that chapel and said 'I am the way.' Reading these scriptures about the Israelites following the Ark of God's presence made me understand what that means much more.
  9. Q2. (John 3:1-8) When Nicodemus came to Jesus, do you think he was already born of the Spirit? No. What is the difference between people who have experienced the second birth, and those who have only experienced the first birth? 1 Cor 2:12-14 says that the person who is born of the Spirit understands the things of the Spirit. The person who has not been born again of the Spirit does not understand the things of the Spirit. "What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit." (1 Cor. 2:12-14) In John 3:10, Jesus asked Nicodemus, "You are Israel's teacher and do you not understand these things?" Nicodemus was a teacher of the law but he didn't undrstand the things of the Spirit because he had not bee born again by the Spirit.
  10. Q1. (John 7:37-39) In Jesus' teaching on streams of living water from within, whom does he invite to drink? Whoever is thirsty What does he promise to believers? Streams of living water will flow from within them. To what degree has a spring of living water been fulfilled in your life? I was filled with the Holy Spirit in four different churches (three different denominations). Streams of living water flowed out of me. When I tried to be in one church and said I would submit to a pastor, I literally saw the Holy Spirit go into the earth of my heart. God told me that it was a beautiful new box but it was still a box and He wouldn't stay in a box. Paul said that we are still carnal when we say we belong to one man. He said that one plants, another waters, but God gives the increase.
  11. Q4. (John 16:5-7; 14:12) What benefit is there to the disciples that Jesus goes away? He will send the Holy Spirit to them. If He doesn't go away, He can't send the Holy Spirit. It is for their good that Jesus goes away so the Holy Spirit can come to them. What promise do we have in John 14:12 concerning the Spirit's power in believers? We will do the same works Jesus did and even greater works.
  12. Q3. (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13a) Why do we believe that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or power, but a Person? On several occasions John uses the personal pronoun 'he' for the Holy Spirit. What kinds of functions that we attribute to persons does the Holy Spirit do? The Holy Spirit appoints missionaries (Acts 13:2; 20:28), He leads and directs workers in their ministry (Acts 8:29; 10:19-20; 16:6-7; 1 Corinthians 2:13), He speaks through the prophets (Acts 1:16; 1 Peter 1:11-12; 2 Peter 1:21), He corrects (John 16:8), He comforts (Acts 9:31), He helps us in our infirmities (Romans 8:26), He teaches (John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 12:3), He guides (John 16:13), He sanctifies (Romans 15:16; 1 Corinthians 6:11), He testifies of Christ (John 15:26), He glorifies Christ (John 16:14), He empowers (Romans 15:13), He searches all things (Romans 11:33-34; 1 Corinthians 2:10-11), He works according to his own will (1 Corinthians 12:11), He dwells with saints (John 14:17), He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), He can be resisted (Acts 7:51), and He can be tempted (Acts 5:9). Why is it so easy to refer to the Spirit as "it" rather than "Him"? Because in John's gospel the "Spirit" is often referred to by a neuter Greek pronoun, which you would expect, since the word pneuma has a neuter gender in Greek
  13. Q1. (John 7:37-39) In Jesus' teaching on streams of living water from within, whom does he invite to drink? Whoever is thirsty. What does he promise to believers? We will never thirst. The water Jesus gives us will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life. That spring should become rivers of living water flowing out of us to bring life and healing to others. To what degree has a spring of living water been fulfilled in your life? I am very thankful for this lesson. I was filled with the Holy Spriit in four different churches. Rivers of living water flowed out of me. I quenched the Holy Spirit, saw Him go into the earth of my heart when I tried to things the 'right' way and apologized for speaking and said I would submit to a pastor. I believe God has shown me this is what has happend to the church. We have buried the Holy Spirit in the earth of our hearts so that rivers of living water no longer flow out of us. God says in Jeremiah 2:13, "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
  14. Q5. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth? He does not speak on His own. He speaks only what He hears. He brings glory to Jesus." Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age and its task of laying the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? No it does not just apply to the apostolic age and laying the foundation. We still need to be led into truth by the Holy Spirit. We are still building God's house, Jesus Christ, and we must have truth to do this.
  15. Q4. (John 16:5-7; 14:12) What benefit is there to the disciples that Jesus goes away? Jesus told the disciples, 'I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." What promise do we have in John 14:12 concerning the Spirit's power in believers? "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father."
  16. Q3. (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13a) Why do we believe that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or power, but a Person? On several occasions, John renders Jesus' words using the masculine pronoun, apparently to emphasize the Spirit's personhood. In John's Gospel the "Spirit" is often referred to by a neuter Greek pronoun, which you would expect, since the word pneuma has a neuter gender in Greek
  17. Q2. (John 15:26-27) What does it mean to "testify"? It means to be a wtiness of or to offer testimony, in this case of Jesus. In what way does the Spirit testify about Jesus? He bears witness, is a witness, and offers testimony of Jesus. He brings to remembrance all Jesus taught and teaches it to us.. The Spirit presents Christ's case for him before the believers and the world. Can you testify from personal knowledge about Jesus? Yes. Or were the apostles the only first-hand witnesses? No. The Holy Spirit lives in each of us and wants to testify of Jesus. This lesson is very interesting to me. I studied to be a legal assistant but never became one. However I believe I am one in prayer. The other day, we were going through so many battles. I thought of how people are asked in court, Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God? I thought about how the truth is that we have total victory in Jesus Christ and I would testify to that. The song 'Testify to Love' came to mind. We are to testify of love and be a witness of Jesus.
  18. Q1. (John 14:15-17) In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? Jesus said that He would ask the Father and He would send another Paraclete to be with us forever, the Spirit of Truth. Who was the initial Paraclete? Jesus. In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? The Holy Spirit will be in us, whereas Jesus was just with the disciples not in them. How was he "with" the disciples? He was physically with them. When will he be "in" them? When He asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit, He will be in us.
  19. Q4. Who sends the Holy Spirit? The Father or Jesus? Does it matter? John 14:16-17 says that Jesus will ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit and the Father will send Him. In John 15:26, Jesus says that He will send the Holy Spirit from the Father and that the Spirit goes out from the Father. Jesus said that He and the Father are one so I don't think it matters who actually sends the Holy Spirit. They sent Him in unity. However there is something that I believe does matter. The lesson quoted John 20:22 and said that it was difficult to understand. It said that some theologians call it a proleptic act, an act that prefigured Pentecost. I never found that verse difficult to understand. I assumed it meant what it said. I believe that this portion of scripture about receiving the Holy Spirit is very important and has been ignored by many focusing instead on Pentecost. "Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.' 22And with that he breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” We were saved because Jesus forgave us all of our sins on the cross. But then He gave His church the greatest authority there is. He gave His church the authority to forgive sins or not forgive them. When Stephen was stoned to death, he did what Jesus did and asked the Father to forgive his murderers. When the church forgave, God brought His justice and apprehended Saul and turned him into Paul, the evangelist who wrote most of the New Testament. We don't realize the power of forgiveness. When we forgive, we set people free from their sin and their sickness as Jesus showed. When we don't forgive, we keep them bound to their sin and sickness. I believe that the world is filled with sin and the curse because we aren't taught to forgive. Jesus said if we don't forgive we aren't forgiven. One time God told me to start bible studies based on 'the least common denominator of forgiveness.' All of us have sinned but all of us are forgiven by Jesus.
  20. Q3. (Luke 3:22; 4:1, 14a; 4:18-19; 5:17b; 10:21; Acts 10:38a) Did Jesus do miracles by reason of being the unique Son of God, or by means of the power of the Holy Spirit upon him? Why is this important for us as his disciples? In what ways does Jesus serve as our example in ministry? Jesus did miracles by means of the Holy Spirit upon Him not as the unique Son of God. This is important for us because Jesus told His apostles, As the Father has sent Me, so I send you. Jesus told His disciples to wait until they were endued with power from on high so that they could be His witnesses unto the ends of the earth. This happened on the Day of Pentecost. It is supposed to still be happening. Jesus was the light of the world, but He also said that we are the light of the world. We are supposed to be letting the light of Christ in us shine. The Holy Spirit is the oil for our light. A couple of songs come to mind. 'Go Light Your World' by Kathi Troccolli and 'Give Me Oil in My Lamp.' We have to be plugged into the power source of God for our light to shine. Jesus was our example for this.
  21. Q4. (Joel 2:28-32; Ezekiel 36:26-27; 37:14; 39:29) What promises do we find in Joel and Ezekiel concerning the Holy Spirit? Who are the recipients of these promises? In Joel 2:28-32, God promises to pour His Spirit out on all people. He says that we will prophesy, dream dreams and see visions. He promises that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. God promises in Ezekiel 36-26-27 that He will give us a new heart and a new spirit. He will remove our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh. He will put His Spirit in us and cause us to walk in His ways and obey His commands. . In Ezekiel 37:14, God promises to put His Spirit in us and that we will live. He says that He will put us in our own land. I believe this promise about the land is addressed to Israel specifically. He says that we will know He is the Lord. He says that He has spoken and He will do it. In Ezekiel 39:29, God promises He will not hide His face from His people any more. He will pour His Spirit out on the House of Israel. I believe the promises in Joel 2:28-32 and Ezekiel 26:26-27 are for all people. I believe that the promises in Ezekiel 37:14 and 39:29 are for Israel.
  22. Q3. (Isaiah 11:1-2; 42:1; 61:1-2) What promises does God make through Isaiah the prophet concerning the Holy Spirit and the Messiah? How were these fulfilled? Isaiah 11:1-2 says that the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord would rest on Jesus, the Branch who came from the Root of Jesse. Isaiah 42:1 says that God will put His Spirit on Jesus. Isaiah 61:1-2 says, "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn." After Jesus' baptism, the Holy Spirit came on Him. Afterwards the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He overcame all temptation by using the Word of God. He came out of the wilderness in the power of the Holy Spirit to do His Father's work. In Luke 4:21, Jesus quoted Isaiah 61:1-2 and said that that day the scripture had been fulfilled. Personally, I believe that this is what God intended baptism to mean for the chruch also. Jesus was baptized. The Holy Spirit came on Him and anointed Him. The Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness where He was tempted by the devil. He overcame all temptation with the Word of God and came out in the power of the Holy Spirit. The same is true of the Israelites. They ate the Lamb and applied the blood. The Holy Spirit led them through the Red Sea (baptism) and into the wilderness to be taught that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. God's intention was to take them into the Promised Land to defeat giants. I believe God intended this to be the pattern of the church so that we could have victory over our enemies.
  23. Q2. (Numbers 11:16-29) What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people? What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God's people? The 70 elders were already leaders and officials, but when God wanted to use them to lead the people, He took of the Holy Spirit that was on Moses and put it on them. When the Holy Spirit comes on them they prophesy. Moses wants the Spirit to come on all people so that they can know God as he knows Him which would ease his burden of leading them.
  24. Q1. (1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51:11) What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament? What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God? The primary purpose of God anointing (putting His Spirit on) someone in the Old Testament was to set them apart and empower them for a particular job, i.e., king, priest or prophet. Being anointed with the Holy Spirit caused them to know and love God. The anointing was the very presence of God. David pleaded that God would not take His presence or Holy Spriit from him.
