  1. Why did Cain resent Abel? Cain resented Abel because his brother Abel was righteous, so that Cain hated Abel Why did Cain kill Abel? Cain killed Abel because Cain did not control his angry caused by his jealousy to Abel. Cain could not control his angry, because he did want to repent of his sins, but he chose to live unrighteous, and as a result of it he hated his brother who did what is right How does the story of Cain and Abel illustrate Jesus' explanation of why the world hates us? The same as Cain resented Abel because Cain is unrighteous and Abel is righteous, the world hate us because we who have been saved and born again seek to live righteously, and the world which is in conformity with Jesus
  2. How does John's teaching on sin and righteousness in this passage relate to combating the false teachers? John's teaching on sin and righteousness is in opposition to the teaching of the false teachers. John teaches that sin is lawlessness and lawless deed, that sin is not trivial, so that Christian must purify themselves from sin, that they cannot go on sinning What did they seem to be teaching about sin and righteous living? They is teaching that sin is trivial and not important to live righteous in him, that sinning do not relate to breaking law, so that Christians can keep on or go on sinning, are not a must to purify themselves
  3. How does the presence of God's seed in us keep us from habitual lawlessness and sin? God
  4. In what way does our expectation of Christ's Second Coming motivate us to purify ourselves from sin? Our expectation of Christ's Second Coming is a firm belief that the Christ's Second Coming is not a
  5. In what sense are we "children of God"? It is the children of God in a sense that we are spiritual children of God. It is not of physical offspring. We are spiritually born of him What does the Holy Spirit have to do with this "new birth"? The Holy Spirit is sent by God to comes into our heart and bring us new life. How does the new birth change us? We can see the kingdom of God. We can see what is right. We do what is right. We purify ourselves from sin. We do good works that are prepared by God in advance (Ephesians 2:10)
  6. If we have the Holy Spirit, why do we need teachers in the church? It is because although the Holy Spirit is in us, to help the infant and immature believers to be mature, God uses teachers in church. The teachers are the spiritually mature believers that have also had teachings and trainings by other mature believers that God appointed. The position of a teacher is one of some ones he appoints that their job is
  7. In what ways is the Holy Spirit an internal Guide for us? He leads us to the truth. He brings truth. He makes us know the truth In what ways does he teach us? He teaches us all things and reminds us of what we have been taught about him and his teachings. He testifies about Christ Jesus In what ways does he point us to Jesus' teaching? He alerts us to the false teachings or doctrines and points to the truth in Jesus
  8. What does it mean to abide/remain/continue in Jesus? To abide/remain/continue in Jesus means to continually stay in touch with Jesus, to continue live in him, to fix our eyes on him, to keep holding his teaching Give an example of what a Christian might be doing who is "abiding" in Jesus. He/she is doing a bible study with intention of knowing him deeper, or of knowing God
  9. What is the "anointing" that John is talking about? It is anointing from the Holy Spirit. It is an event that the Holy Spirit comes to the believers and are live in them In what way is anointing connected to the Holy Spirit in the Bible? The Holy Spirit, who lives in us as a result of anointing, comes in one in power and the power in one is manifested in speaking about God and his commands in power, doing good deeds, doing miracles, defeating the power of devil, and preaching boldly the Gospel Has every Christian received this anointing? What do you think? No. Only those who wholeheartedly believe in God and receive personally Christ as the Savior and the Lord, receive this anointing
  10. What is this antichrist that John expects to come? As the Bible says that this antichrist is a person that is coming, now is not yet revealed. He will be the rule of the world. He will proclaim himself to be God. He is a puppet of Satan. He is the enemy of Christ. He will make war against Christian believers and causes the unbelievers to worship him What is the difference between the antichrist and antichrists in the church John is writing to? The antichrists in the church John is writing to have come. They have been in the church, but they are not that John expects to come. They are enemies of Christ. They have been influenced by
  11. What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives? I rewrite what Pastor Ralph Wilson write in this lesson: First is the **** of the flesh. It may refer to any and every desire of man in his rebellion against God. It may also refer to the primitive desires of man; second is the **** of eyes, It may refer to sexual **** incited by seeing. It may also refer to the greedy ambitions. Third is the pride of life. It may refer to a boasting or arrogance in ones wealth or outward circumstances Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves? Because although we have been saved and are Gods children now, the sinful nature is still in us, and we are prone to sin, and we can win the battle against sin, or we can overcome the world, only if we are leaded by Holy Spirit or we are alway s in the light human. Although we are the members of the Kingdom of God, we still live in the world and the world rains down on us its values and teachings that approve those sins. So, we have to be in the light and let the Holy Spirit lead us and control us. If not those sins will control us and we will have those sins in us. Why is worldliness so harmful to our future? Because it is passing away; it produces nothing for our future, it does not produce eternal things for us; it only produce treasure on earth, not in heaven. So, if we only pursue it while we live in this world, we will get nothing eternal in the future.
  12. John encourages "children," "young men," and "fathers." Why do you think he takes time to encourage them? It is because they have false claims, or heretical teachings from the false teachers, which can contaminate or corrupt the true teachings, or true faith that they have had. In what ways does he encourage them? He offers them the promises and inducements that they have received because of their status in Christ
  13. How does hate and unforgiveness blind us spiritually? Hate and unforgiveness make our spiritual eyes blinded, so that we are in the darkness and walks around in the darkness, unable to see the truth of his Word If we have been darkened by hurt and hate, how do we come into the light? We get rid of our hurt and hate by forgiving somebody who make us anger and dislike to them because of something bad they have done to us in the past, and, then, love them, instead
  14. How can we be serious about obeying Christ without become legalistic and judgmental, with a self-righteous attitude like the Pharisees had? We can do it by following him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength that come from our love to him How do love and legalism differ? Love comes from God, given by God, and we receive that gift and use it to obey him. It can be applied if we have a good relationship to God. Legalism comes from ourselves, based on our own strength, or trying to make ourselves in our own ways. It can make us boast How can we be serious about obedience and make love our center? Our obedience is based on love or flow from love, not on rules, or not from self-righteous spirit through keeping legalistic rules. And, we love in the way as Christ command in Matthew 22:37-39 that is, first,
  15. What assurance does John give us if we do sin? We have Jesus, who is our Advocate, our Spokesman, before the Father, who is also the only Righteous One who can atone for our sins How does this comfort us? Because of it, our sins are forgiven by God, and our relationship to God is restored. How does it make us want to avoid sin? Jesus so loves us that he sacrificed himself for our sins. Not stopping at it, he is always ready be our Advocate when we have done sin. So, because of his so great love to us, we must love him too, which we prove by not making him sad by our sin
  16. How would you define "confession"? The act of acknowledging our sin and not covering it to God, and to other people to whom we make sin Why is confessing our sins so important? Because our sins make our relationship to God not run well, need to be restored by our sin confession. What happens to us if we stop confessing our sins? God will hide his face from us and will not listen our prayers (Isaiah 1:15); God will not make our paths straight (Proverbs 3:6); His good plans for us cannot be executed What are the promises given to us if we do confess our sins? He will forgive us our sin and purify us from all unrighteousness How is forgiveness of sins different from cleansing? Forgiveness of sins is about restoring our relationship to God because he has forgiven us ; cleansing is about removing the unrighteousness from our soul
  17. What is the result when a Christian walks in darkness, that is, continues willfully to do what he or she knows to be wrong? We do not have true fellowship with him and do not live by the truth How does this involve self-deception? God is light, in him there is no darkness at all, and so if we walk in the darkness but claim to have fellowship with him, we deceive ourselves What is the result, according to verse 7, when we walk in the light? We have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus purify us from all sin How do we get back into the light if we sin? Come to God and confess our sins
  18. Jesus makes St. John responsible for his mother Mary because first, St John is her close family, Mary is his aunt, whom he must love and be responsible for; second, St. John is one whom he could trust to take care of Jesus’ mother well About Jesus, this tells us that he loves and care for his mother and is responsible for her welfare We should apply this in our own lives in ways that, first, love our parents, no matter what; second, are responsible for our family obligations, for our family welfare
