Q29. Healing Prayer

Recommended Posts

The one who is sick initiates the prayer for healing. He/she is to “call on the elders” for prayer. It’s important to demonstrate his/her faith that God can use this process to heal. It’s also an indication of the person’s desire to be healed.

According to verse 14 it is the person who is sick that is to call the elders so that they can pray over them. This is important because the person who is sick needs to have faith also. The person that is praying must have faith also because is they are the one that is doing the praying.

(5:13-14) According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing? Why might this be important?

The sick individual is to ask the elders to come and pray over him. It's important that the person wants prayer and has a measure of faith in the value of prayer if the Spirit is to work through this situation.

Q1. (5:13-14) According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing? Why might this be important?

The sick person is to ask the elders of the church to pray. So the sick person is to initiate the whole action. It is the elders who do the praying. I believe God moved James to write it this way because it's the elders who are supposed to have the strongest faith. It doesn't say get the altar boys to pray, but the elders. The prayer made in faith will result in the sick person being healed and restored. Faith is the key word here I believe.

Q1. (5:13-14) According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing? Why might this be important?

According to James 5:14 the person who is to initiate the prayer for healing is the person who is ill.

This is important because they should have the belief and want to be healed. Their faith may be weak so they should call on the elders to pray for their healing.

The elders of the Church should be asked to pray for healing when you are sick. This is important because this type of praying is a focus on God and the fellowship of the family of God.  The sick person requests to be exposed to healing, but the main hope for faith is upon the One or ones doing the praying.

In James, the sick person is supposed to initiate the prayers of others. Of course, praying alone is efficacious as well -- a person does not need the prayers of others to reach God with his or her petition. And, it isn't the case that alone we're only to bring God the little stuff; we should come to Him directly with big things like the need to be healed. God answers the prayer of the solitary.

When Elijah ran away, defeated and alone under a bush, God healed him through the ministrations of angels. Elijah didn't even ask for healing ... in fact, he asked to die.

Since God can heal without our prayers, or without the prayers of elders, and, in the case of Elijah above, proactively healed Elijah so he could continue his prophetic ministry ... why do we pray for healing? I'm confused. If God needs us on the earth, He'll keep us alive. If not, we get to go home to heaven.

I'm backing into the belief that healing miracles have very little to do with the actual healing, but are rather prompts for deeper faith and reflection or a means by which unbelievers are brought into the kingdom.

This could explain Jesus' statements about faith in the context of healing. In the larger scheme of things, our prayers or those of the elders are not about healing, but about believing increasingly deeply in Him.

  • Do you believe ...
  • Just believe ...
  • Everything is possible for one who believes ...

Healing perhaps is an authoritive  grace given to a  certain  group of people enabled to do this in Christs name . Perhaps it is not given for us to heal ourselves. Another authoritive grace is holy communion this is something which has to be

partaken of by someone with special authority to administer it.  Not a devotion

we can do ourselves

Q29. (5:13-14)
According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing?
Why might this be important?
I feel that in all circumstance of life, we should go to the Lord in prayer. When we are in trouble, we should pray earnestly; and in times of rejoicing, we should lift our hearts to Him in praise. We should not allow ourselves to become victims of circumstances, or to wait for our circumstances to change. We should acknowledge that God is in control of our lives. When we come to sicknesses, we know that God does heal. We are to initiate the prayer for healing and when we are weak and weary turn to the elders to pray for us. The elders could intercede for us, while we are ill, but their presence at our bedside, and their audible prayers, as well as the anointing with oil, are all bound to have a healing effect, even if it is only psychological. This will show that we belong to a happy church served by leaders that are compassionate, caring, loving and selfless.

Q29. (James 5:13-14) According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing? The sick person or those close to him if he isn’t able to do so. Why might this be important? This might be important to ensure that there is a pre-existing willingness, motivation or faith to get well so that the one doing the praying doesn’t end up casting pearls before swine.

Q29. (James 5:13-14) According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing? Why might this be important?

The one who is sick is the one who initiates the prayer for healing. Because by asking the sick person is showing faith, that the prayer of the righteous avails much.

Q1. The sick person has faith in God’s ability to heal him and so he prays to God . He also sends for the elders who are mature faith filled followers of Christ and asks them to pray for him. When we seek God in prayer it shows that we have faith and that we are dependent on God and so we come to Him in humility and lay our needs before Him in hope and expectation.

verse 14 says elders of the church are to initiate prayer for healing, i think its important due to spiritual authority God has entrusted them with.

Q29. (James 5:13-14)

According to verse 14, who is to initiate prayer for healing?

Why might this be important?

Verses 13 and 14 list different happenings when and how we are to approach God, e.g.

If you are afflicted, ill-treated, suffering evil, you should pray

If you are glad of heart, you should sing praise to God

If you are sick,  call in the church elders, the spiritual guides, they should pray over you, anoint you with oil in the Lord's Name.

From this we see that the sick person has to take the step of faith and call in the elders, who are to pray over him.  I think by this,  faith in prayer to God is acknowledged and also the leadership of the assembly is acknowledged.

James instructs the sick person to "call the elders of the church."  The sick person does not have to rely on his/her own faith but call for the faith of others.

It is the elders who are to initiate the healing-because they are suppose to be more mature in the faith to help lead the person who is sick to grow in Christ and in their hope and faith for the healing.  This is important to have a sense of order in the body of Christ.
