This seems like a different "summary" of the law and the prophets than Jesus indicated in Matthew 22:37-39. How are they the same? How are they different? The most obvious way is that Jesus' saying "do to others as you would have them do to you" is almost exactly the same as "love thy neighbor as thyself." "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind" does not seem to be as evident on the surface, but it seems to me that we can't love our neighbor or ourselves without first loving God. God is the inventor, the originator, of love in the world. Without His love of us, and our reciprocal love for Him, we wouldn't care about doing what He wants us to do, including showing the love of God and telling about His Good News to people who don't know Him. They are the same because both say that we have to be nice to other people. They are different because the first is about deeds and the second about love. The Golden Rule and the law and the prophets want us to love one another as we love ourselves. We are to treat one another as we want to be treated. In Matthew 22:37-39, We are to love God first and with our heart, soul, and mind. Then we are to love others as we love ourselves. They have similarities because of the element of love in the equation. They are different because we are to put God first in Matt. 22. This is a different summary in that it is not a guideline of omission of evil as much as it is a all to submission to the righteousness of Christ and a call to proactive faith instead of a passive faith. Righteousness as Christians now fulfilled as walk according to Spirit b)They are similar because both about God’s command’s to love,and both God’s word to us, C)They are different because we are commanded to love the Lord your God with heart, soul, and mind first v37 As we love others as ourselves we show the love that we have for God in keeping his commandment v37, the first commandment to love Do to others (your neighbour),what you would have them do to you(as yourself)v39 It is not a natural behaviour, we can only do this by allowing God to work through us. The golden rule is about love, and respect for others as well as ourselves.We must put ourselves in the shoes of another and imagine how it would feel to be ridiculed or condemned and also how great it feels to be treated with dignity,love and forgiveness. Jesus is all about love, forgiveness, and respect. We must seek to emulate all HIS virtues. Otherwise He will have died in vein, the golden rule capsulizes all that Jesus embodied.. The "Golden Rule" capsulizes the message of the law and the prophets by commanding us what to do: We should treat others in the way we would like to be treated. This seems like a different "summary" of the law and the prophets than Jesus indicated in Matthew 22:37-39. How are they the same? They are the same in that, they are both talking of love. How are they different? The different I can see is the command who to love. Not just to love, but to love your neighbor as yourself. Put yourself in your neighbors "shoes". Walk a mile in them. Love him as you do yourself. Matthew 22: 37-39 tells us "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all you mind." If we truly love God and our neighbor we will keep the command. Look at God positively. Rather than worrying about what we should not do we should concentrate on all we can do to show our love to God and to others. James said "Faith without works is dead." DebLam3teach Posted December 31, 2014 Report Share Posted December 31, 2014 If we live by the Golden Rule, by treating others as we ourselves want to be treated, all the laws and the words of the prophets would be fulfilled. We would not murder, commit adultery, pray disrespectfully, etc. It is the same theme found in loving God with all our being and loving others as ourselves in that what we focus our love on determines how we treat others around us. If our love is focused on God instead of self, then our love toward others is more pure. However, Jesus' two commands are also a little different: if we merely love others as we love ourselves, that love can still fall short if it is a selfish love. That is why the first command of loving God is so important. All other loves are purified when God is the focus and standard for everything else. Do unto others as you want them to do unto you in everything. If you love your neighbor as you love yourself, you will not treat them wrong. In the OT we are to love God with our all. JoanG Posted May 14, 2015 Report Share Posted May 14, 2015 There should be no difference in how we treat others and the way we want to be treated. They deserve to be treated with respect and honor. In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus is upping the game. He is telling us not only to treat people fairly, but to love them as we love ourselves. If we would respect others then I don’t think that we would have the problems that we have today. The summary of the law and the prophets in Matthew 22 are the same because we are to love the Lord with all our heart and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. The message of the Law and the Prophets in a nutshell is ultimately LOVE. The Golden Rule is to show love. If you do to the next one what you wld have them do to you, that is being caring and in plain language showing love. In Mth we are told to love the Lord our God with all of our hearts (this being the 1st commandment). Before we can do to others what we wld have them do to us, we wld need to put this into practice. This Love wld need to be part and parcel of us already, only then wld we be able to fulfil the 'Golden Rule'. They are the same in that both are selfless. In Mth we are to see to our relationship with God first, then our relationship with our neighbour. They are different in that the GR only deals with our relationship with our neighbour.
