Leaders should be observed carefully and tested before place them in office so as not to set them up for failure or bring shame to the office. Both their spiritual maturity and character should be evaluated.  To put a new believer in an office could cause him to think more highly of himself than he should.

During the period of observation and testing we should look for faithfulness, trustworthiness, that they a blameless and above reproach, love the Lord and walk in obedience, not given to partiality and favoritism, love what is good and despise evil, and are well instructed in the things of the kingdom of heaven and able to communicate them to others.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10; Titus 1:6-9) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office?

ANSWER: The first quality that Paul gives for a leader is to be "above reproach"/ "blameless" (1 Timothy 3:2). Character in a leader is primary, since everything flows from that. Too often when we select leaders in the church, we' re looking for warm bodies that are willing. We don't really examine character. Too often, church leaders are chosen in a popularity contest, rather than by weighing who will best represent the church in the community. If you are not careful, you can elect a church leader: (a). who is so bizarre in character that he is a laughing stock in the community; (b). or even worse: someone who has a reputation for greed, cheating in business; (c). or someone who is a womanizer. This only brings disrepute on Christ and His church.

What should you be looking for during this period?

ANSWER: Oftentimes, we make the mistake of looking at someone who has been a successful professional in business and think that he or she is therefore qualified to exercise spiritual leadership in the church. But we must not appoint people simply based on their appearance or social status. I believe that many congregations make this mistake.

Ultimately, the choice of a leader in the church should be based on a combination of factors including their character, spiritual maturity, leadership abilities, alignment with the church's values, and their ability to serve and guide the congregation effectively. The major criteria for selecting leaders in the church are moral and spiritual credibility which are necessary for church leaders.

Leaders also need to cultivate a good reputation in the society in which they live. They need to be men and women of prayer who have intimacy with the Word of God and reflect His will before the congregation. When leaders are elected whose hearts beat in accordance with God's will, your church will be filled with new vitality and experience more blessings than you ever thought possible.

Leaders should be observed carefully and test before place them in office to assure that they meet the qualifications of the job and not set them up for failure.  Both their spiritual maturity and character should be evaluated.  One who has lately come to the knowledge of the truth, just embraced and professed it, and become a member of a church should not be appointed to such an office lest he be lifted up in pride which swells his mind and cause him to think more highly of himself than he should.

Doing this period you should be looking for spiritual maturity-a wise man of God with sound judgement and understanding, some one who loves the Lord and seeks to do His will, some who loves good and despises evil, some one who is well able to instruct and communicate to other the things of the kingdom of God not only through teaching but in actions as well.  Someone with a blameless character that is above reproach, one who is faithful, trustworthy, watchful over himself, his words, actions, and for the souls of others. One who is not swift to strike with his hand or his tongue, not covetous of amassing wealth and riches, or desirous of applause and glory from men.  One who patiently bears all reproaches and injuries, puts up with affronts, and gives up what is his right and due rather than contend and quarrel.  One who rules his own house well.

Leaders must be observed and tested to acertain if they are spiritually and emotionally matured. It would be disappointing to have a leader who cannot keep confidential matters that the members shared with. A leader that will always put his or her needs first above that of the flock that he/she is shepherding.  Again, the new convert should also not be considered immediately because pride, lack of understanding the Word of God can lead to his/her downfall.

Spiritual maturity is key and the person who not only understands the Word of God but lives the Word of God. A leader should have good communication skills and have a good listening ear because if you lack these, wrong counsel can be given to people as you will always want to impose that which you think is right whereas, you must enquire from the Holy Spirit that which you need to advise a member on. Spending time in prayer is key as it gives once an intimate relationship with the Father and proper guidance will be revealed as to what and how to "feed the sheep".

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10; Titus 1:6-9)

Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office?

We have to take enough time to observe them, to evaluate their spiritual maturity and their character. If they are immature emotionally or spiritually, we' re just setting them up for an attack of the enemy. As Paul said, "They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons."

What should you be looking for during this period?

Critical examination of to determine genuineness, put to the test when examine and if they are immature emotionally or spiritually.

Sad but true....many times sincere Ministerial candidates are not mature emotionally nor capable of handling such an important position as a shepherd.   There are important factors to be considered: intellect, emotional and spiritual aspects of the Ministerial candidate.   In our age, it is a fact that such candidates need deep Ministerial formation.    They did not get proper spiritual formation as children nor were they raised in good Christian home.  Plus, ministerial candidates were former drug users and perhaps never catechized.  Lots of issues indeed to deal with for seminary staff members and for Ministerial candidate search committees !

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10 ; Titus 1:6-9) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office?

Choosing a leader should be the leading of the Holy Spirit. Paul states Overseers (above reproach), Elders (blameless) and Deacons (nothing against them). Of course! we are not perfect, but the Holy Spirit will empower the chosen. A godly leaser will demonstrate the Fruit of the Spirit. A leader should have the basic character be faithful, trustworthy, a  person who loves God and love what is good. Upright, use wisdom when having to make a choice. Have a good heart.  Must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited, and fall under the same judgment as the devil.

In today's society some church  people are just letting anybody come in to join just to make a name for themselves.  When this is done they are setting themselves up for the enemy.

What should you be looking for during this period?

A Godly person who will do the will of God from his heart. And not so called godly people that will commit ungodly things that and will hurt the house of the Lord.

1 Timothy 3:6, 10; Titus 1:6-9) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

Because you can’t tell what someone is like and what they stand for until you’ve seen them in many situations. At worship, are they focused on walking closer with the Lord and do they have a heart for service. Do they get along with family and others well. Their walk with the Lord needs to match their talk. And testing would involve watching them as they are  serving others in Jesus’s name. Giving them opportunities and observing them as they work.

What is this person’s testimony and  how long has he been walking with the Lord. His family life must be stable, he must be even tempered, not drawn to drugs or excessive alcohol use, in control of his emotions. Knowing God’s word, willing to proclaim it and to explain or teach those who don’t understand it.

The reason that we should observe and test leaders before placing them in office is to see what kind of character they are. If we put them in to soon then they might become big headed or they might lead the congregation down the wrong path.

Q2. (1 TIMOTHY 3:6, 10; TITUS 1:6-9)

Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

Leaders should be observed for some time and perhaps even given some minor responsibilities in the local church. As they prove themselves to be trustworthy and faithful, then they can be advanced to greater responsibilities. What should be obvious is that they are spiritually mature; well-grounded in the faith; with a knowledge of the Word; and a solid Christian lifestyle – a true disciple of our Lord. His personal character must be above reproach. If married, the husband of one wife, and faithful to her. He must be of sober-minded, that is not frivolous; self-disciplined; respectable; hospitable, a lover of strangers; faithful, trustworthy, and dependable; a devout believer, hating all evil; upright and just in all his dealings with others; and not a recent convert.

Do not put someone in a position of leadership simply because of their resume, because they are smooth talkers, because they have a phD, because they have a family. These are all good things, but you need to look closer. And wait. Watch and see the fruit in their lives.
