Prayer

Songs of Ascent (Psalms 120-134), by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson
Available in PDF, and Kindle formats only US $2.99.

Father, sometimes when help seems to be delayed, we wonder if it will ever come. Awake in us a fresh expectation of your coming and reign. And help us to persevere in trusting the promises of God until they are completely fulfilled. Thank you for your amazing promise to David fulfilled in Jesus Christ the Son of God. Thank you. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Come soon, Lord Jesus!

Amen! Come Lord Jesus!

Have you ever considered that when Jesus’ feet touch the earth, the holy will touch the defiled, but instead of being defiled the holy will heal it? Amazing!

State the Davidic Covenant or Promise in your own words.

Ps 135:11 one of your own descendants = like Abraham, not all his descendants are his (Jn 8:39). So as David was unique in his relationship with God (a man after God’s own heart) the descendent would be too.
I will place on your throne = a place of total power over God’s chosen people.
if your sons keep my covenant = the big IF. And the noun is plural now. As God looks from generation to generation, He is looking for someone who respects the original founding covenant made in the desert.
And the statutes I teach them = God says He will teach them extra rules. So, the original rules are not the final word? The king is expected to be tutored by God.
Then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever. = God’s part is to make sure, through all history, that there will be a son and there will be a throne.

How was this promise fulfilled in Solomon's time?
Solomon was unique in that he was blessed with special wisdom. He reigned over God’s chosen people in David’s place. He had a son to replace him and the throne was even more powerful after his reign.

How was it fulfilled in Jesus?
Jesus was unique in that He was filled with the Holy Spirit, among other things. (Remember that God called Solomon His son too.) He was a descendent of David (but not the only one- there were others) but the throne over Gods chosen people was occupied by King Herod, a puppet king of Caesar. Jesus doesn’t reign from an earthly throne, but from God’s throne in heaven, “forever and ever”.
(After Jesus, the Davidic line “petered out”; there is no line today. But Israel is still distinct, as a separate race!)

How will it be fulfilled when Jesus returns?
That is the big question! Predicting the fulfillment of promises from an amazingly creative God is impossible. Keep an open mind, listen to the Spirit, and watch for the signs is the best I can advise. God’s will be done; His Kingdom come. Not my will...and it most likely won’t even be on your radar!...but Your will. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Davidic Covenant states that David and his linage will always be the king and long as they follow God’s laws and decrees. This promise was fulfilled in Solomon’s time because Solomon was the son of David. It was fulfilled in Jesus because Jesus as a decedent of David. Jesus and will be when he returns to king forever.

The Davidic Covenant is a promise from God to king David that a descendant of his would always rule over Israel.

Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem where the Arc of the Covenant would come to rest.

Jesus fulfilled the promise as the Messiah, the Son of God, who came to deliver the Israelites from the bondage of sin.

When Jesus returns, all glory will belong to Him, the Son of God, who will rule over His kingdom for all time.

David wanted to build a house for the Lord, he found a place -  Jerusalem, but God said because of the bloodshed during David's reign that his son Solomon would build the Temple.  Solomon became king and built the Temple.   The Davidic Covenant  promises that David's dynasty would last forever.  Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise and hope. He is the Son of David, born in Bethlehem, the City of David, and crucified with the title "King of the Jews" fastened to his cross. He was raised from the dead and now rightly sits on the throne of David's kingdom over what we now call the Kingdom of God. 'The kingdom of the world  has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ,  and he shall reign forever and ever.'" (Revelation 11:15) "Every knee shall bow,  in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,  to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11)

God promises David that his family / descendants will last forever, that one of them would continually be on the throne, as long as they stayed faithful to God and obeyed his commandments. God promised to be a  father to them and punish them when punishment was needed. But God would never take his love away as he did with Saul.

David’s descendants remained on the throne until 587BC , when the king of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar attacked, captured and destroyed Jerusalem. He took the Israelites as captives and took them to Babylon.

David’s line can be traced through the generations to Jesus born in Bethlehem. Jesus came to redeem us Jews and gentiles from our sins by suffering torture and dying on the cross for us. He rose from the dead on the third day and now sits at the right hand of God the Father in  heaven. Jesus is the fulfilment of the Davidic promise.
When Jesus returns He will take all believers to heaven with Him , where we will continue to give Him glory , honour and praise. And continually call out with all the heavenly hosts “Holy, Holy, Holy.”!

Day 13 Meditation (Psalm 132).
State the Davidic Covenant or Promise in your own words.
How was this promise fulfilled in Solomon's time?
How was it fulfilled in Jesus?
How will it be fulfilled when Jesus returns?

God promises David that his son (Solomon) will succeed him as king and that he will build the temple, and this kingdom will last forever and ever. This is also, an unconditional covenant and does not depend on any conditions. Solomon became king and he built the temple. The Messiah (our Lord Jesus Christ) would come from the lineage of David and the tribe of Judah and will establish a kingdom that will last forever. Christ will reign for eternity - now in His spiritual kingdom and in heaven, and later, on earth, in the new Jerusalem. We read about Jesus’ reign in Isa 9:7: “Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”

1. State the Davidic Covenant or Promise in your own words.

God swore an inviolable oath that a son from David's own body would sit on his throne.

 2. How was this promise fulfilled in Solomon's time?

Solomon was the son/heir/king from David's own body.

3. How was it fulfilled in Jesus?

Jesus is the direct descendent of David, through the lineage of Mary, Jesus' mother (Matthew 1:2-16) and Luke 3:23-38,  "as was supposed of Joseph, son of Heli."  (the Messianic lineage)

4. How will it be fulfilled when Jesus returns?]

Jesus who is seated and reigning in Heaven over the entirety of creation, will one day sit on the throne of David in Jerusalem, the final King on earth when He reigns for 1,000 years, then forever in Heaven.

Day 13 Meditation (Psalm 132). State the Davidic Covenant or Promise in your own words. How was this promise fulfilled in Solomon’s time? This was God's promise to David that his dynasty will reign forever. David began the preparation for building a temple for Yahweh but it wasn't until his son Solomon succeeded the throne that God's home was actually built. This succession of throne from the bloodline of the kings was the fulfillment of the Davidic covenant.

How was it fulfilled in Jesus? How will it be fulfilled when Jesus returns? The period of the succession lasted over 500 years until Jerusalem was captured by the Babylonian king and the David covenant finally ended. It wasn't until the prophecy of the Messiah, a descendant of David, that the promise of the covenant would be fulfilled again. Jesus was said to be from the line of David and therefore the promise was fulfilled once again.

In the Davidic Covenant God promised to bless David's descendants.  That his reign as king would not end with him, but that his own biological son would be king after he would have died, and his kingship and kingdom, God promised to establish forever.  David was promised that if his son, the king sin, God would discipline him accordingly but He would not stop loving him or disinherit him like He did Saul. God promised him that He would not only establish his throne forever, but also his family and his kingdom as well.

This was fulfilled in Solomon who was David's son, and who succeeded him to the throne.  God allowed Solomon to build a house for the LORD.

This was fulfilled in Jesus,  also known as the Son  or descendant of David, whose lineage can be traced back to David through his son Nathan.

This will be fulfilled when Jesus returns and take His seat on the throne of David in the New Jerusalem.

State the Davidic Covenant or Promise in your own words.

Promises that David's descendants would rule over Israel as long as they followed God and his royal line would never end.

How was this promise fulfilled in Solomon’s time?

Solomon would become King and he was allowed to build the temple that David wanted to build.

How was it fulfilled in Jesus? How will it be fulfilled when Jesus returns?

Jesus was the promised Messiah.  Promise made to David will be fulfilled when Jesus returns in all his glory.

God told him. " I will make your your family and your decendants last forever. After you die your descendants will reiggn in your stead, I will build their kingdom. But if they sin I will punish them by causing their enemies to come against them and attack them. Yet I will never leave them and never stop loving them. Your kingdom will ast forever. Your throne will be forever.

Solomon becamwe king after David and his son and grandson were king after him.

Jesus is the Messaih the one David talked about and called Lord. The one who built a heavenly kingdom and will reign again on earth when He comes again.

When Solomon became the King of Israel God chose the city of Jerusalem to reside and live in as make a holy city because of the temple that was being built for His sake. It was fulfilled in Jesus through the fact that Jesus was Lord's son and chose to die for the world's sins and healed the sick and did many miracles. When He returns He will officially set foot on the Mount of Olives and it will split in two. But also every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

David will never cease to have a descendant on throne of Israel and ultimately whole earth.

Solomon took the throne and built the temple.

Jesus was born, died, resurrected, gaining throne of Israel and whole earth for eternity.

Every knee will bow and every tongue confess Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the father.

The Davidic Covenant is an unconditional covenant made between God and David through which God promised David and Israel that David's dynasty would last forever.  That the Messiah (Jesus Christ) would come from the lineage of David and the tribe of Judah and would establish a kingdom that would endure forever.  The prophecy began to be fulfilled in Solomon, David's son, and ultimately in Jesus, who was of the lineage of David.  And ultimately in Jesus Christ when He returns to earth to rule and reign forever.

In my own understanding Davidic Covenant is the promise which was made long time ago to Juda the great grandfather of David and it was stated as follows: The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be, Genesis 49:10 and David inherited that promise because it was pointing to Christ.Again the promise was also passed to Solomon since it was an everlasting covenant.  It was fulfilled in Jesus  Christ when the angel announces the birth of Christ to Mary and we read from Luke 1:31-33  "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

When Christ comes back for the second time, the kingdom will be forever and we read that in Revelation 5:5,"Then one of the elders said to me, 'Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.

Davidic covenant is God's promise that his throne would last forever, that the royal kingship would be preserved through his bloodline. Solomon built the temple where the ark of the covenant would dwell, which is where the Lord would meet with His people and atonement would be made. The Kingship came through Jesus when He made atonement. He was the Lion from the tribe of Judah, born through David's bloodline. Jesus will set up the throne in Jerusalem and rule and reign forever.
