  1. In what sense is God's provision of animal sacrifice for forgiveness of sins an expression of his mercy? Were animal sacrifices actually adequate to atone for human sin? God did not just vanquish sinners. He gave them a chance to redeem themselves by the giving of the sacrifice. This is mercy and grace. God allowed it so it must have been adequate in Gods eyes.
  2. What are the basic elements involved in a sacrifice for sin? Confession A sacrificial animal Laying hands on the animal Slaying the animal The cooking of the meat The eating of the meat by the priests Which of these are still necessary for forgiveness of sins today? Confession Which are no longer necessary? Why? All the rest as Jesus did it for us on the cross allready.
  3. Why is animal sacrifice repulsive to modern people? How much of this has to do with a city vs. a farming way of life? Animal sacrifice or even the slaughter of animals is repulsive to modern people because our lives are packaged. Everything is neat and we do not like to get our hands dirty. My grandparents lived on a farm and my grandfather had to do the slaughter of the animals for eating. It was a way of life and there was nothing wrong with that, in fact if you did not do it yourself you were frowned upon.
  4. Why is anger an appropriate response to sin? Because God got angry at the Israelites when they sinned agains Him by worshipping a golden calf. Jesus got angry at the money lenders in the temple. Jesus is our example and He was sinless, so anger is an appropriate response to sin. What is the difference between capricious or uncontrolled anger and anger that brings about justice? Anger that brings about justice is controlled and you just know that it is right in your heart where the Holy Spirit lives. The other anger is a human anger, a tantrum throwing anger that accomplishes nothing and makes you feel small afterwards. It usually causes injury, wether emotional or physical. "Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger as the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness that God desires"
  5. Why did Jesus' enemies heed his prediction of being raised on the third day even more than his disciples? They were looking for a reason to kill Him, therefore anything He said were analized over and over again. His words were most likely also used to compare with scripture. Did his enemies expect him to rise? No they did not expect Him to rise as that would mean that they acknowledge that He is the Son of God. Did his followers? Also, I think, no. You have to understand that this was a very difficult concept for them to understand. Yes, He raised others from the dead but himself? Also they were overcome with grief after witnessing His flogging and death and now their beloved Teacher was gone.
  6. What do you think Jesus meant when he said, "I am the resurrection and the life"? Jesus is the ONLY way to the resurrection and life ever after.. What role will Jesus play in the resurrection of the dead? It seems that Jesus will play a personal role.
  7. How are we to follow Jesus' example as the Servant? By behaving humbly and by serving others whenever the opportunity arrises. Why is humility difficult? Because it is in our nature to think first about ourselves. And lets face it, as this is such an area of constant struggle I believe it is one of the easiest ways for satan to control us. Why is obedience hard? I think obedience is hard because most of the times it requires of us to get out of our comfort zone. That nice me-zone that we park off in a lot. Where are you struggling right now to be humble and obedient? Humble - at home Obedient - I still struggle to share the good news with people. I find that I hesitate a lot when I should probably just say it.
  8. What is the purpose of the Lord’s Supper? Jesus said that we should do the Lords Supper often as it will remind us of His body that was broken for us and His blood that was spilled for us. Why should we partake often? So we can constantly be reminded of God's great love for us (sinners and broken vessels) Why is it so easy to forget what Jesus has done for us on the cross? The cares of life crowds the knowledge out of our heads. Satan comes and makes us so busy that we forget to think about God constantly. Also, shockingly, it is viewed as a story and the true impact of what was done for us is watered down.
  9. Why is Jesus referred to as the Lamb of God? The lamb was the item that was sacrificed, therefore this is indicative that Jesus was the Lamb that God was going to use to pay for our sins. To what degree does He take away our sins? He takes our sin away completely when we come to Him. There are no terms and conditions. The gift is free and available to all. How does He come to represent you - as your sacrifice for sin? Jesus was sacrificed for the sin of the whole world till the end. He came to open the door forever, for those who want to be with Him.
  10. Q7. (Luke 23:46) What does Jesus mean when he says, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit? Father I am coming home. Why does this saying comfort us so much? We can also now commit our spirit to God when we die and what happens at the time of death is not unknown or scary anymore.
  11. Q1. What does Jesus’ holiness and righteousness demand of our lives as his disciples? It demands of us to be holy and righteous too. Thank the Father that He helps us to do that as we as sinners are not able to that out of our own strenght. In the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats, what was the primary characteristic of the sheep vs. the goats? (Matthew 25:31-46) The sheep looked after others and the goats were not interested
  12. Q2. (John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15) According to scripture, both the righteous and unrighteous will experience resurrection. What will be the result of resurrection for the righteous? Heaven
  13. How does Job's vision of resurrection (Job 19:25-27) differ from the Jews' former understanding of death as Sheol? Death was final to the Jews, that great terribleness that awaits you after dying whereas Job had hope of more, of being resurrected. What is progressive revelation? It is revelealing the future in little manageable bits
  14. Q1. How do you know that John the Baptist's statement about the Lamb of God refers to sacrifice? (John 1:29). How was the comprehensiveness of "sins of the world" so radical a concept? They used lambs for sacrifice in those days and lambs blood was used to mark the lintels over the doors in Egypt. When God brought the Israelites out of Egypt He told them that He has put them apart to be His people. So for God to want to bless the Gentiles also by paying the price for the "world"s sins was an inconcievable notion.
  15. Q5. (John 19:28) What do you learn from Jesus' Fifth Word: "I thirst"? What does this tell us about Jesus? What does this tell us about his experience on the cross? Jesus suffered like a human being, thereby confirming that He was fully human just as He also was fully God. He was thirsty and in pain physically.
  16. Q4. (Mark 15:34) What does Jesus Fourth Word from the cross teach us about faith? About commitment? About love? What effect should this understanding have on our lives? This is amazing, truly amazing! I have watched movies and read books on the crucifiction and have always seen the physical pain, but only now do I understand the spiritual pain that Jesus went through. Thank you for revealing it to me Holy Spirit. I want to have faith like that, I want to trust God that much. That is the example of the type of faith we should have. Wow, Jesus really loves us, I mean really love us. You hear that Jesus loves you everywhere but we do not really comprehend just how much. You have to be changed by knowledge like that.
  17. Q6. Since Yahweh seems to be formed from “I AM” as God’s own name, what is the significance of Jesus’ “I am” statements? Only One other has declared that He is I AM. Therefore I would say that Jesus is God, there can be no other reasoning for this. Which of these “I am” statements means the most to you personally? I am the Light of the World. I associate evil with darkness and when you are depressed everything seems to be darker but Jesus is the Light, it chases away the darkness and the light reveals everything. The Lords love is like a radiant light that shines into the darkness of our souls and washes away the shadows.
  18. Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives? Jesus knew his disciples and he knew their future. He therefore placed her with the one he knew would look after her the best. We do not know the circumstances of His other disciples and even of His brother. It is easy to judge these people because why did Jesus not put her in their care? He only made an informed decision. This tells us that He loved her like a son would love his mother. We should look after our parents like they looked after us when we were small. We should forgive them for the mistakes they made and allow God to help us in the difficult circumstances that sometimes accompany looking after difficult older people.
  19. Q5. (Luke 9:59-62; 6:46) Is Jesus our Lord if we don’t obey him immediately? Yes, I do think He is still our Lord even if we do not obey Him immediately. Is he our Lord if we don’t follow his teachings? No. Definitely not. Our aim is to become more like Jesus and how can we do that if we do not follow what He has taught us? What areas of your life do you need to surrender to his Lordship? My will, everything else is His.
  20. Q4. Why is the title “Lord Jesus” such an exalted one. What does it tell us about Jesus’ divinity? The title, "Lord Jesus" is a powerful, comprehensive statement about who Jesus is,God himself.
  21. Q3. (John 1:18) How does the title “Only Begotten God” signify Jesus’ divinity? Jesus is said to be the Son of God because He shares God's divine nature. He is God. I interpret the word begotten to mean of/from God. How does the Only Begotten Son differ from you and me as sons and daughters of God? We are created sons and daughters of God where Jesus is part of the Trinity. What does “only-begotten” say about Jesus’ status with the Father? About the costliness of the cross? Jesus gave up His position with God as God to come and live as a lowly human, to be tortured and crucified by the beings he created and loved. We cannot in this life fully comprehend the costliness of the cross.
  22. Q1. In what way does the title Son of God make Jesus equal with the Father? The word Son indicates familiarity. When you deal with the Son, is that the same as dealing with the Father? Yes, as the Son is the mouthpiece, the emmissary from the Father. Do you know Jesus the Son of God? Yes, in my limited capacity. But I am learning more daily. Do you love him? I adore Him.
  23. Q2. (Luke 23:39-43) Why is the thiefs faith so astounding in this situation? Because he did not react the same as the crowd. With everybody shouting and insulting Jesus it would have been easy to just fall in with the crowd, like the one thief. He must have had conviction in his heart that Jesus was innocent and actually who He claimed to be. What did the thief receive that day? Grace, What do you think this meant to Jesus? Heaven holds a great big party when even one sinner is saved, I do think it brought a smile to his heart.
  24. Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David"? The title "Son of David" had a whole lot of meaning for the religious and this could have made them angry that it was uttered by little ones who do not know or understand the meaning. Also, they hated Jesus due to His admonishment of them and now He was given this title by children. In their eyes: "What an outrage" What does the title "Son of David" signify? It signifies that Jesus was from the line of David, and that as God promised that a person from Davids' lineage would one day come and free the Israelites. Thus by implication - the Saviour.
  25. Q3. (Matthew 16:13-16) Whom did Peter believe Jesus to be? The Son of God How did Peter come to believe this? It was revealed to him by the Father. Why does Jesus command his disciples not to tell others that he is the Messiah? (Matthew 16:20). Because of the turmoil such a revelation would have created.
