Jesus was the most humble and kind Person who ever walked the earth. To do this publicly as though performing a magic trick would have drawn all of the attention to Himself and away from the young couple being honored by the celebration and His attendance. Who was he trying to protect? He was honoring the bride and groom...to protect their privacy from intrusion , their parents from humiliation and embarrassment. What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? He is a liberal and loving provider...never stingy or tight fisted! What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? He would have brought a disgrace on the family responsible for the wedding if He made a big scene. Who was he trying to protect? The groom, bride and their families. puritu Posted September 14, 2014 Report Share Posted September 14, 2014 Jesus performed this miracle quietly for the sole purpose of demonstrating Gods awesome power, to build the faith of those who participated in the miracle. His purpose was not to cause a stir but a small ripple amongst those who were privy to the miracle. The quality of the wine speaks of and to Jesus perfection when we receive a blesing from God. The wine was a reminder that all given from and by God is perfect and good. Let us focus on his goodness and good deeds in our lives. I think he performed this miracle behind-the-scenes because he didn't want the family to be embarrassed. Also, like he told his mother, his time had not yet come. Jesus had got the servants to fill the jars with water, as He did not want anyone saying that He had got His disciples to fill the jars with wine, hereby deceiving everyone, and giving them an appearance of a miracle. It would take the servants some time to fill all six jars with water and besides all could see them doing it. They were also told to fill the jars to the brim, so that no one could say that wine had been added to the water. This was all done to protect the integrity of all involved. As soon as the jars had been filled, Jesus told the servants to give some to the man in charge of the wedding feast. This showed that the miracle had been performed immediately. He willed it, and it was done. It was also done with perfection! All the jars were full of the best quality of wine! This was a clear demonstration of divine power, and made in such a manner as to leave no doubt of its reality. This reminds me of Colossians 1:16, “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.” Nothing is impossible for our Lord and Saviour Jesus!! We discussed earlier this week-when Jesus reacted to his mother's suggestion about the wine. He probably performed this miracle behind-the-scenes because if he performed it openly, people would flood so much attention on him he would not be able to go about his work, training and teaching his disciples (Mark 1:43-45; 7:36). As others have suggested, Jesus did what was entirely appropriate at the wedding for the welfare of all involved, without drawing any attention to himself. The servants however, would have known that it was him, and others at the ceremony, after the servants had told them. The people who knew what happened and who performed the miracle, including his disciples were probably amaized, as people were when they witnessed other miracles of Jesus (Luke 5:26, Luke 9:43). I would have to repeat what he said to his mother, “Why ask me this now, when it is not my time”. It is in my opinion, Jesus was doing his first recorded miracle behind the scene because, it was not his time, or place, to reveal to others his Messiahship, however, because of “LOVE”, I see this done in private as a love gift to the family, and a sweet answer to the call on his mothers heart, what a wonderful beginning, just a hint of the signs yet to come, signs prophesied, that He is the Messiah. Q. Who was he trying to protect? I see the love of God shielding the family from humiliation. Q. What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? It is full to overflowing, there is enough for everyone. Q. What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? The miracle was not that Jesus turned water into wine, but that he turned water into the “BEST” wine, the best of wine takes time, even years to bring forth its true effervesce, and the fruit must come from the best of grapes, grapes that have been watered and well cared for, it is interesting to me that the water Jesus used, was what they used for that of purification; unadulterated wine when drunk in “moderation”, has a tendency to revive and invigorate, to make cheerful, and provides a continuance of that cheerfulness by strengthening the muscles, and bracing the nerves. Jesus referred to the broken matzo as his body and the “wine” as his shed blood, (Genesis 35:14) Jacob poured out a drink offering of wine over the altar, in Israel’s sacrificial system the material of a drink offering was wine, Jesus, his given Jewish name was Yeshua, in Yeshua’s time wine was a metaphor for blood, Jesus poured out his wine, his blood over the altar, his blood that would give life, to make one cheerful, to bring strength and to revive in us a new creation; therefore, when I recall this verse, I rejoice, for the “BEST” of “WINE” has been poured over me. As He said, it wasn't the right time for Jesus to reveal to the masses who He was. In that situation, with the drink already flowing, things could have gotten out of hand if everyone at the wedding feast suddenly cottoned onto the fact that the Messiah was among the guests. Jesus was protecting His own agenda and the privacy of His earthly family as well. What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? Jesus didn't just turn the water into ordinary wine . . . It was wine of the finest quality imaginable, and plenty of it. If you're gonna do a miracle, make it a good one! Jesus, the Son of God, doesn't do things by half measure, not ever. This is a simple example of "My God will supply all your needs." Jesus performed the miracle of turning the water into wine behind-the -scenes because he knew his time had not come yet to proclaim the gospel. Jesus may have been trying to protect his mother from public scrutiny or perhaps not ready to explain his disciples his purpose on earth. The quality of the wine in the miracle Jesus performed was by far the best God had to offer of the fruit of the vine. RebeccaMallinson Posted September 21, 2014 Report Share Posted September 21, 2014 I think it is over-analysing the miracle to wonder why it was a behind the scenes miracle. It is clear that this miracle sprang from Mary’s suggestion, not fore-thought on Jesus’s part. If he was trying to protect anybody (and I am not sure that he was) it was Mary’s feelings. She knew his capabilities and had faith that he could help with an immediate human problem of social embarrassment. The quantity of wine tells us of God’s generosity to us. The quality of the wine tells us that God will always give us the best of everything. There are no half-measures. Both speak of God’s love for us. You do not ask, but I think ‘saving the best till last’ was a very important message in the story. We can read it as showing that the best is to come for us all if we have faith, as Mary did. Jesus performs his first miracle behind the scene probably because he did not want to be famous now and wanted to face his ministry only. I don't know if at all he was trying to protect anyone. The quantity of the water- turned wine shows the abundance and riches of his glory and resources. Probably because He was not ready or to put it the other way His time had not yet come. Who was He trying to protect? His ministry perhaps as it would have drawn much unwanted attention at this time, or and also the bride, groom, hosts. What does the quantity and quality of the wine tell us about Jesus glory. He is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Those who witnessed the miracle need to see it happen. Who was he trying to protect? One could say that He was trying to protect God's plan, if that is possible. I am not sure that Jesus was trying to protect anyone except that, like He said to Mary, my time has not come. God's timing is perfect, He is never early or late. As such, since it was not time for Jesus to show Himself to the world, he performed the wine miracle behind the scenes. When Jesus performs a miracle, it is to give glory to God the Father. This is one of my favorite stories to recall when I am struggling with patience and waiting on The Lord... Jesus saves his best wine for last. Jesus loved the people at the wedding- that's why He was there so it makes sense He would want them to be happy and not embarrassed. He loved them. And He gave them way more wine than they would ever need for the celebration. He loves to bless people and His gifts are always more than we need/deserve/even ask for... Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes because He wanted to remain on God the Father's timetable. He said many time that His purpose was to do the Father's will, not his or His mother's. He was protecting His anointing, His purpose. The quantity and the quality of the wine tells us that Jesus' glory is above all others; there is no comparison. He was trying to protect the host of the wedding and the bride and groom He wanted all the glory to be given to them. Jesus wanted the best for the wedding celebrating just as we will have the best at the wedding we will celebrate with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The quality of the wine tells me we can have the best of everything if we give all the glory to God. Why wait until everything runs out before trying God? Why save the best till last? If he would had performed this in public then the people would have had started to gather around him and prevented him from what he came on earth to do. By waiting on Jesus we will always have the best quality of what we he wants us to do. With Jesus, 7 is complete, glory to the Lord. What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? Saving the best until now. The best wine. The glorious God he is. By God's grace we receive in abundance every day the air we breath, and in the USA the majority have more than enough to eat. We are blessed. At the moment HE did this miracle, HE was not ready to go "public" still a handful of people knew, including HIS disciples. It was not like when HE raised to son of the widow of Nain, HE didn't make much statements except what was needed to serve the person in desperate need of such miracle, or in this case the need for more wine. For Jesus, miracle actions speak loud to those they are intended to impact [including us today]. All HIS acts on earth where to glorify HIM and the Father. Jesus made more wine than was necessary for the wedding feast. This shows that Jesus could have made any amount He wanted to. Jesus is God! What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? Jesus made the best! So the head of the feast told the bridegroom that he had saved the best for the last. Jesus is God! Jesus was very generous with both the amount of wine and the quality of it as well. Jesus would not perform a weak type of miracle. He had too much glory in Him for that. He would only do the best. John6:68-69 Posted April 1, 2015 Report Share Posted April 1, 2015 It was not time for Jesus' miracles to be known yet. I believe that Jesus was aware of God's time line and needed to follow it. His disciples, because he needed the time to prepare (teach them) to continue His ministry after his crucifixion/resurrection. Jesus is very giving - He wanted to ensure they wouldn't run out again.
