He will put it on our hearts when we are doing good and when we are messing up. This applies to us today if we will only go to Him. This sense of the Spirit applies to us today. Or as 1 Corinthians 2 suggests, he reveals and interprets the things of God to those who are spiritually discerned. I believe this promise can also apply to Christians today, as we read/hear the Bible and seek to understand its meaning. Sometimes a new light on a passage dawns upon us. Sometimes we suddenly see the relevance of the Scripture to ourselves and are so convicted by it. These are ways in which the Holy Spirit is still guiding Christians into the truth today. It is the Holy Spirit who reveals to us what has already been taught by Jesus. We really need the illumination from the Spirit of God to understand the truths revealed in the Scriptures. Augustine says that the Bible is shallow enough for a child not to drown, yet deep enough for an elephant to swim. So whether it’s a baby Christian or a seasoned saint, to understand the depths of the Word of God, we need the illuminating work of Holy Spirit. It is in that sense that The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth. There is no new truth revealed by the Holy Spirit, but He reveals in a fresh way according to our need. This promise is not only to the apostlolic age, but to the end of the church age. So every believer in the church age can experience the Holy Spirit’s guidance into “all” truth and not to just “some” truth. In the apostolic age, the Holy Spirit guided the apostles in laying down doctrinal principles in the epistles, by reminding and elaborating on the teachings of Jesus. For us, He gives fresh insights from the word of God. He removes the veil that’s in our eyes, so that we can see Jesus in the written word more and more and grow in our relationship with Him and know the length, width, depth and height of the love of Christ that passes all human understanding. Were it not for the Holy Spirit opening up the scriptures to us, it would have remained a book of fables and stories and good sayings. He convicts us of spiritual blindness and reminds us of what Jesus has taught us, then ultimately will lead us to a intimate relationship with God. The Holy Spirit will remind us of what Jesus has already taught us. He will not be teaching us anything Jesus hasn't already taught but every time we read the Word He will reveal something new to us. No, it does not apply only to the apostolic age but to every person who believes. The Holy Spirit will continuously empower believers. It is the truth that sets us free. And the truth is His word. Unless the Holy Spirit reveals the truth from His word, we cannot be set free. Holy Spirit will convict us of sin, of righteousness and of judgement. The work of the Holy Spirit is not only for the apostolic age but also till the end of ages. When the believer is convicted of his sin, he turns to Jesus. When the believer is convicted of God’s righteousness, he is justified. When the believer is convicted of the judgement, he is saved. Holy Spirit plays an important role in building the body of Christ and advancing God’s kingdom here on the earth. The main purpose of the Holy Spirit is to reveal Jesus and His teachings to us and empower us to do mighty works for His kingdom. He shall not speak of Himself rather He will glorify Jesus. All that the Father has is revealed to Jesus and the same is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. In what sense does it apply to us today The Spirit does not come on His own authority but to come bear witness to Jesus, just as Jesus bore witness to the Father. He reminds us of the teachings of Jesus by discernment. He convicts us of sin and unrighteous living in our present day. We can testify to this when we have those aha moments. This can happen after hearing a great Sermon, reading the Word or meditation. That is our most intimate time with God. We then are to testify as to what we were shown and taught. He is the same yesterday and forever. As he led the disciple so he will do the same for us today. The Holy Spirit lead and guide us into all truth, He will not speak on his own but what he hears and tell you of what is yet to come. In what sense does it apply to us today?No. The foundation of faith has already been laid,so, just as Jesus spoke to his disciple of what his father was saying, so the Holy Spirit will remind present day disciples of what Jesus said. My understanding of the Holy Spirit is that he ministers the truth as instructed by God the Father so that we abide by His word and commandments. It is of course still true today because in order us to be able to walk in the path of righteousness with God Almighty, we first need the leading of God's Spirit to show us the way. But when He, the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you into all truth.(John 16:12-13a.) The Spirit will guide us into all truth by imparting knowledge, wisdom, revelation, spiritual gifts, empowering and strengthening us and to draw us into a deeper relationship with the Father. No the promise applies to all believers today and even the generation that is to come after us, until the coming of the Lord. We are to constantly seek the Holy Spirit's guidance and assistance with humility so that we will accurately understand the Father's words to our hearts. Not at all.In what sense does it apply to us today? It is the same Spirit, with the same power, and Spiritual Gifts, that dwells with us today, teaching us the truth, the will of our Father, the ways of Christ, and reminding us of what He said and taught. Sending us out into the the world to speak the truth about the world and it's ruler, what is to come, and to bring the truth, light, comfort healing, and freedom to those who the Father has called to Himself to those who the Father draws near. To the degree that we are willing and able to hear/see/perceive the Holy Spirit, He can guide. To the degree that we defer to the direction He takes us, He guides into truth. Q. Many good and knowledgeable people -- John MacArthur comes to mind -- do not believe that the HS works today as it did in the apostolic age. I don't doubt Mr. MacArthur's sincerity or wisdom, but neither do I doubt Pastor Ralph's sincerity or wisdom, but, they disagree. I don't know what I believe, to be honest. I haven't seen some of the miracles to which you speak, mostly in subequatorial countries. It's not that I don't believe ... I just can attest to this. Maybe miracles do occur today. I don't doubt that in some measure the Holy Spirit is in me and working through me. The question is the boundaries or limitations imposed on the Holy Spirit since the apostolic age -- some believe those boundaries are very tight, others believe they're no different than they "used to be." The three things that matter so much to God are the three things God wants to see in us: justice, kindness, and humility. To act justly is to treat people fairly and respectfully.
