3. The Name Jesus

Recommended Posts

The significance of the name Jesus is that of a savior coming to save His people "... You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Luke 1:21). Jesus came to destroy the power of sin. Both Mary and Joseph were told by the angle to give this name to the baby so neither would ever forget who he was - Yahweh's salvation embodied in human form.

Q3. (Matthew 1:21)

What is the significance of the name Jesus?

The name, which many names did in past times, told the history or the intent of the person given the name. The name Jesus meant “Yahweh saves”.

Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently?

So that they would have both been given the verbal instructions that this is what God wanted the baby named for it told the mission of Jesus. I also think the angel kept his message simple and said the same thing to both Mary and Joseph so that there would be no doubt what the angel said and Mary and Joseph would be even more assured that these messages (in a dream) were indeed from God.

Jesus was a common name at the time and as such it would not have caused a great stir. The baby needed to grow up normally so as to benefit from a full range of human experiences. The fact that it translates as 'God Saves' was an irony waiting to be fullfilled.

I see a twofold reason for the angel telling both Mary and Joseph to name the baby Jesus. Firstly it just emphasised the reality of the message and that they were in it together. Secondly it would have become their shortcut way of secretly reminding each other of the events which they knew would never be believed in their lifetime and sadly still are not believed today by too many Jews and Gentiles alike.

Lets bless each other by sharing HIS name JESUS <><

Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus?

The name Jesus means God saves. Jesus was born into the world to save people from their sins. It is also another form of the name Joshua. Joshua was Moses's second in command and actually led Israel into the Promised Land after Moses had died.

Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently?

So they would both know God was serious about having his Son named Jesus, I suppose.

Seriously, they both needed to know how important their son's mission in life would be. Naming him Jesus would be a constant reminder.

Jesus means "Yahweh saves" and that is exactly what Jesus came to do, save us from the penalty of our sins. He told them both, I suppose, so that there would be no argument or question as to what His name should be.

Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently?

The name Jesus means that it means "Yahweh Saves," Yahweh's salvation embodied in human form. The name was given to both Mary and Joseph independently because God did not hide anything about Jesus' birth from Mary and it was given to Joseph because the Father was responsible for naming the child in those days. As he named the child he legally adopted Jesus as his son.

"Yahweh saves." -- How clear and certain the name proclaims this destiny. Not once, but twice, to Joseph and Mary. Although this child will be raise by them, this child is coming with a purpose: to save men from sin. To defeat the enemy. To establish a way to the Kingdom.

The life of Jesus is planned and confirmed by His unusual conception and birth. Halleluiah!

Q3. (Matthew 1:21)

What is the significance of the name Jesus?

Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and

Joseph independently?

a) Jesus -meaning of His name- "Yahweh saves" - Jesus was sent to save

from eternal death, to save, preserve, rescue man from eternal death.

B) Both Mary and Joseph was given the name of the baby separately so

neither would forget who He was. It was important that Joseph was as

willing as Mary to do his part in the birth and raising of Jesus. Being

told by an Angel insured compliance of Joseph accepting and raising

Jesus as his own son.

Jesus' name is significant because it means "Yahweh saves".  His destiny was to save not as in military might but to save us from sin.  The angel gave both Mary and Joseph the name separately so neither would ever forget who he was.  He was salvation embodied in human form.  He was human yet divine.

The significance of the name Jesus is "Yahweh saves". Jesus is our saviour who came to redeem the whole mankind from sin and slavery and reconcile us back to the Father in Heaven.

The angel gave the name both to Mary and Joseph independently because each one had to do their part in fulfiling God's plan in the birth of Jesus. Mary had to fulflil her part in the great plan of God and Jospeh had to fulful his part in God's great and mighty plan of the savior's birth into this world.

the NAME of Jesus has power beyond our ability to comprehend, but in part

Although, that power that raised our LORD, and Saviour,  from the dead and seated Him at the right hand of the father, is available to us through faith.)

Through faith in the name of Jesus, God (in His mercy) saves us not only from sin, but also from the just and due penalty of sin, which is God's wrath and death. (Getting what I don't deserve at Jesus' expense is grace)

It is the ONLY name under heaven which humans can be saved.

The angel Gabriel spoke to Mary that Jesus reigns in an everlasting kingdom.

An angel spoke to Joseph in a dream that Jesus would be the Saviour  from sin.

It seems impossible, without God preparing their hearts, to comprehend.

They did not have what we have now.

We have the benefit of Jesus' teachings (His Word) and resurrection,

and His sending of the Holy Spirit.

(Alleluia!)

The name JESUS means " YAHWEH saves " this is what HE was sent from the FATHER to do . To save HIS people from our sins , to destroy the power of the devil . Although there were many folks with the name Jesus in that day , there was only ONE  who was Born of a Virgin .

I believe the angel told them both to name HIM JESUS because of HIS mission to mankind.  This was the start of the plan of salvation , made before the foundation of the world .

The significance of the name Jesus is that the bearer of the name saves people from sin.

The angel gave the name to both Mary and Joseph so that if one forgets the other would remember.

Jesus' name meant--Yahweh saves or to rescue from affliction. In this case, Jesus will save the whole human race from sin!

If told separately the appointed name will appear more important and commanded. Furthermore, telling each parent independently will prevent the chance of one forgetting the name, or in another circumstance, one of them disagreeing with the other.

The significance of God's insistence that he be named Jesus is not to honor a national hero, but because of the meaning of the name: "Yahweh saves." (notes)

Both Mary and Joseph were given this name by the angel so neither would ever forget who he was -- Yahweh's salvation embodied in human form. (notes) Mary the mother would certainly be told but Joseph was told for  Joseph, in naming the child,  acknowledges him as his own son and thus becomes the legal father of the child according to Semitic law. As a result of this legal adoption, Joseph's ancestry as a descendant of David transfers also to his legal son.18 Biologically, Jesus is begotten by the Holy Spirit and is thus the "Son of God" (Luke 1:32a), but legally he is the son of Joseph and heir to the promises of David, Joseph's ancestor.

Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently?

Jesus means “Yahweh is salvation”. In the Hebrew it was Yeshua which is the same as Joshua. Even though the children of Israel came out of Egypt through Moses, it took Joshua to bring them into the Promised Land. Likewise our salvation is through his namesake Jesus, who saved us from the slavery of sin and brings us to abundant life.

Both Mary and Joseph received instructions as to what the baby is to be named independently. This would have confirmed to them that He was indeed to be named Jesus. We see a few people given names even before they were born. Ishmael, Isaac, Josiah, Cyrus and Jesus. By giving the name before His birth was a testimony of what His destiny would be – to be the Savior of the world.

Q3. The name of Jesus was not uncommon because in Hebrew it is Yeshua which is short for Yehoshua which is Joshua, but Jesus is not called after Joshua. Jesus’s name indicates His mission which is to save. Jesus means “Yahweh saved”. Both Mary and Joseph were told this name at different times so that they would never forget just who Jesus was and why He came. Jesus was born and raised in poor circumstances but it never changed or diminished who He was and why He came.
