Q4. The Blood of the Covenant

Recommended Posts

The function of the blood of the covenant sealed the covenant made & provided cleansing.

In the N.T. it speaks of Jesus' blood which sealed the new covenant & provided cleansing also. The covenants are similar because God covenanted with man. He wanted to be their one & only God, and for them to love & serve Him. The first covenant was between God & Israel. The second opened the covenant to us as well as Israel and God provided the once for all sacrifice for sin--Jesus Christ!

Q4. (Exodus 24:8; Matthew 26:27-28) What is the function of the "blood of the covenant" in Exodus?

The function of the blood in Exodus is to atone for Israel’s sins.

(Lev. 17:11) For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.

God through His mercy set up a system to atone for the sins of Israel, however, what I see at work in this system that God set up with Israel is, His mercy given for His chosen people.

Lev 16:10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

Lev 16:15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:

Lev 16:16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

What an awesome God, what awesome mercy and grace was given to the nation Israel, as God set up His everlasting blood covenant with His chosen people Israel.

What is the "blood of the covenant" in the New Testament?

The blood of the New Covenant is the offering of atonement for the sins of the world, it is finished and we can rest in its atonement.

How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant?

They are both everlasting blood covenants offered by God to atone for mans sins.

How are they different?

They are different in the fact that the prophecy of Jeremiah could not be fulfilled by the blood of bulls and goats, it could only be fulfilled through Israel’s promised Messiah, not revoking the everlasting covenant God made with Israel, but fulfilling God’s promise to Israel that the New Covenant would bring love, God’s laws would be written on the heart of Israel, and it will be written on the heart of the Gentile believers also, those who believe in Israel’s Messiah, Jesus.

The difference is, the covenant now applies to both Jews and Gentiles, the true remnant of believers being those who have God’s laws written on their hearts, those who love and follow Israel’s Messiah, Jesus.

God’s covenant with David established the throne of His kingdom forever.

I’m looking forward to the Messiah’s return, when He will, in God’s time, ascend the throne of David. I think it will be soon.

Q4. (Exodus 24:8; Matthew 26:27-28) What is the function of the "blood of the covenant" in Exodus? What is the "blood of the covenant" in the New Testament? How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant? How are they different?

Answer:

1What is the function of the "blood of the covenant" in Exodus?

It seals the Covenant, and make it binding:

Hebrews 9:19-20- For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law , he took the blood of calves and of goats , with water, and scarlet wool , and hyssop , and sprinkled both the book, and all the people ,7 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

2What is the "blood of the covenant" in the New Testament?

It the BLOOD OF JESUS,SHED IN THE CROSS.The Blood which covers us who believe and earn us entrance into the Holiest of Holy.

Hebrews 10:19- Having therefore , brethren boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

3 How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant? How are they different?

The Old Covenant is,just type and shadow of things to come.A physical covenant based on physical promises, with physical signs such as circumcision:

Genesis 17:19- And God said , Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed ; and thou shalt call his name Isaac : and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant , and with his seed after him.

Genesis 17:23- And Abraham took Ishmael his son , and all that were born in his house , and all that were bought with his money , every male among the men of Abraham's house ; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

John 7:22- Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision ; (not because it is of Moses , but of the fathers ;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man

Another sign of Old Covenant is Obedience...

Exodus 19:5-6-5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed , and keep my covenant , then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people : for all the earth is mine: ; 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests , and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel

The New Covenant is based on spiritual Promises, and ETERNAL LIFE..

John 3:16-For God so loved the world , that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish , but have everlasting life.

Hebrews 8:6- But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry , by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant , which was established upon better promises

The Old Covenant is perfected by following the Letters of the Law,by doing this and doing that...It is also commonly called the Work Covenant..

Romans 7:6-But now we are delivered from the law , that being dead wherein we were held ; that we should serve in newness of spirit , and not in the oldness of the letter.

Leviticus 18:5-Ye shall therefore keep my statutes , and my judgments : which if a man do , he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

The New Covenant is perfected by just believing in JESUS..the grace of God..

Romans 10:9- That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Ephesians 2:8-9-For by grace are ye saved through faith ; and that not of yourselves : it is the gift of God : 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast

Ephesians 2;18-22-18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father . 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners , but fellow citizens with the saints , and of the household of God ; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets , Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together growethunto an holy temple in the Lord : 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit .

Q4. (Exodus 24:8; Matthew 26:27-28) What is the function of the “blood of the covenant” in Exodus?

The blood of the sacrificial animals was sprinkled over just about everything to purify it to God. For whatever reason, God declares that spilling blood is necessary for the forgiveness of sin. In effect, the blood sealed the Covenant between God and man. Being holy, God gave the Israelites a way to approach Him by means of animal sacrifice. It wasn't perfect but until the appointed time when His Son Jesus would shed His blood to seal the New Covenant, it would suffice.

What is the “blood of the covenant” in the New Testament?

The blood of Jesus Christ the perfect Sacrifice. God's only begotten Son who gave his life as a ransom for many.

How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant?

The two Covenants are similar in that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. In both Covenants there was a substitutional death and shedding of blood.

How are they different?

"The blood of goats and bulls can never take away sins". That statement was made in the New Testament in Hebrews. The old sacrificial system was imperfect and had to be done year after year. God Himself said through one of His prophets: I am not pleased with animal sacrifices. Even back then when the Old Covenant was still in effect and binding, God was not pleased with it as a way of bringing humankind back into fellowship with Him. The Old Covenant was set up to prepare people for the New Covenant in the Blood of His Son, Jesus. We need to know and remember that God already knew everything that would happen the minute He created the universe. He already knew mankind would fall. He already knew Satan would rebel and thereafter try to lead the world to destruction. He already knew that Jesus would have to die and rise again as part of His eternal plan to make everything as He originally wanted. Why God does things as He does is a mystery to us. Our minds are so far below the level of God's mind that we can't comprehend His ways. Why He didn't just kill Satan outright and remove sin from Creation we'll never truly know. I think it has to do with the free will of mankind. God wants us to love and obey Him because we want to and not because another choice doesn't exist. The angels who rebelled along with Satan will be destroyed in hell. There is no redemption for them. Mankind was created by God in His image and there is the opportunity for us to be saved through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and by His shed blood.

The function of the blood of the covenant in Exodus was to seal the covenant between God and His people and to sprinkle them with blood for the forgiveness of their sins. For without the shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness of sin. It was expressly to make Israel a people set apart for Him.

The blood of the covenant for the new covenant was the shedding of Christs blood as the Paschal Lamb to seal the covenant made with us for the forgiveness of our sins. This included every tribe, tongue and nation.

Both the old and the new covenants required the sprinkling/shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sin. Both were a seal of a promise that we/they would be God's people. Set apart for Him.

How are they different? The Old Testament covenant required continuous sacrifices but the New Testament covenant is completed by the shedding of Jesus blood. Once and for all.

The Old was followed by keeping the law, the New is written on our hearts, making sanctification possible through the love of God by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Q4. (Exodus 24:8; Matthew 26:27-28) What is the function of the "blood of the covenant" in Exodus?

It was the "sealing" of the covenant or contract with the people in keeping God's law. (The people had arrogantly declared "All that the Lord has spoken we WILL DO". Until the law was given at Mt.Sinai, God's people from Abraham on were under grace.)

What is the "blood of the covenant" in the New Testament?

In the New Testament, Jesus in being crucified, dying, and rising from the grave, fulfilled God's Holy requirement for sin and removed the necessity and impossibility of keeping the law. (If one was broken, all were broken). His broken body and shed blood ratified the New and better Covenant, where Grace now eradicates sin and forgiveness is freely given.

How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant?

They were similar in that they were both between God and man, they were both binding and could not be broken by either party. They were both "signed" in innocent blood. They both spelled out the conditions for relationship, both vertically and horizontally.

How are they different?

They were different in that the Old Covenant required the constant shedding of innocent animal blood to cover each sin. In the New (and better) Covenant, Jesus' innocent blood was shed once for all, never to be repeated. It so satisfied God's Holy requirement that rather than "covering" sin, sin was completely removed "and buried in the deepest part of the sea". (Micah 7:19) and as Corrie Ten Boom said "Then He puts out a "no fishing" sign. In the New Covenant, those washed in His blood are seated with Christ in Heavenly places. In the Old Covenant you were only as forgiven as your last sin and what you had offered in sacrifice.

In Exodus, the "blood of the covenant" is to consecrate people, to ratify covenants and for cleansing te altar and everything used during a ceremony.

The "blood of the covenant" in the New Testament is Jesus our Lord.

The Old Covenant is similar to the New Covenant in that, they are both sealed with blood that is used to cleanse, to consecrate people, to make them pure thus bringing forgiveness for the wrong doings.

They are different in that the blood used in the Old Covenant was from animals - goats, bulls; but the blood used in the New Covenant is blood of Jesus Christ himself.

Q4. (Exodus 24:8; Matthew 26:27-28) What is the function of the “blood of the covenant” in Exodus? What is the “blood of the covenant” in the New Testament? How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant? How are they different?

The shedding of blood ceremonially cleansed the people of their sins preparing them to come into the presence of God - and also was the signing and sealing of the Covenant. . .

- The "BLOOD OF THE COVENANT" in the New Testament is the Blood that was shed by Jesus on the Cross at Calvary which remits humanity of their sins and prepares us to come into the presence of God. . .

- The similarity of the Covenants in the Old and New Testaments - they are both Covenants that are initiated by God to atone for the sins of humanity as a whole (the nation of Israel in the O.T.) - so that He could fellowship with them. . .

- The difference is the Old Testament was based on man's willingness and ability to keep the commandments of God. . . in the New Testament Jesus did all that was necessary to fulfill the requirements thereby allowing man the right to come into a right relationship and fellowship with God. . .

In the Old Testament, the blood was the blood of specific animals, bull, goats, sheep, etc. . . In the New Testament it is the shed blood of Jesus that is accepted by God. . .

What is the function of the blood of the covenant?

The Israelites agreed to the covenant God was making with them. The sprinkling of the blood represents life since blood is what sustains life. the blood set the people apart to live holy before God. The blood signifies that the covenant agreement was sealed and bonding.

What is the blood of the covenant in the New Testament?

The blood of the covenant in the New Testament refers to the blood that Christ shed on the Cross of Calvary. He was the sinless Lamb of God that was slain for the sins of the world. His blood is what seals our destiny.

How is the Old Covenant similar to the New Covenant?

They are similar in that both are sealed in blood for cleansing, justification and the acquittal of sin that no longer holds us liable for unrighteous acts.

How are they different?

The Old Covenant was written on stone tablets not in the heart. Unless applied to the heart there is no way that they could fulfill the requirements of the law. This was to show that they could not reach God by physical means. There had to be a better technique of justification and that method was through the precise blood of the Son of God. This can only happen by the piercing of the heart. Before the outward change can be accomplished the change has to come from within by a change of heart. Circumcision of the flesh verses circumcision of the heart.

Now every man has within him the truth that their is a God and the Believer takes the law of God with him wherever he goes.

It is the constant claim of the writers of Holy Writ that what they write is the authoritative and living Word of God. When the Old Testament is quoted in the New, statements like "God says" and "the Holy Spirit says" are frequent (e.g. Acts 1:16; 3:24, 25; 2 Corinthians 6:16). What "the Scripture says" and what "God says are quite simply the same thing in case after case. The Scripture is even personified, as if it were God (cf. Galatians 3:8; Romans 9:17). It was B. B. Warfield who noted accurately that the writers of the New Testament could speak of the Scripture doing exactly what Scripture records God as doing. "And this naturally implies authority," When we come to the New Testament writings we immediately note that nothing less than the authority of the Old Testament Scriptures is ascribed to the writers of the New Testament (cf. Romans 1:15; 1 Timothy 2:7; Galatians 1:8, 9; 1 Thessalonians 2:13). Gegraptai is used of New Testament writings and the apostolic text is placed on a par with the writings of the Old Testament (cf. 2 Peter 3:15, 16; Revelation 1:3). The concept of faith found in the New Testament is consistent with this witness, for faith is simply obedience to the witness of the apostles, i.e. the New Testament Scripture.: Romans 1:5; 16:26; 10:. They believe that Israel was the Church in the Old Testament, and the Church is Israel in the New Testament. The promises of land, many descendants, and blessing to Israel in the Old Testament have been
