Q1) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the leaven?

The main point of this parable is that the Kingdom of God seemingly had insignificant beginnings. It was introduced by the despised and rejected Jesus and his twelve unimpressive disciples. But a day willcome when its true greatness and power will be seen by the entire world. I feel that Jesus was using the examples of the mustard seed and the yeast to illustrate what faith can accomplish. The mustard seed may be small starting out but once full grown can become large enough to sustain live. The small aount of yeast within the dough that brings change to the composition can be symbolic as to what the Holy Spirit can do in our lives.

How would this be an encourage to Jesus disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom?

This would be an encouragement to their faith. They had been under Jeses' teaching for some time. they had been witnesses to all the miricles that he had done. They were learning that they could take Jesus at his word. Here he was telling them although we are starting out small in number that in time would experiance growth despite the opposition.

How would it be encourging to people experiencing smammness or poverty i their lives?

We are not to look at how small or how insignificant things aqppear. It has to do with faith that can move mountains.According to our faith so will it be done. Let us stand firm for if God is on our side who can be against us.

Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven? How would this be encouraging to Jesus' disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom? How might it be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives?

What can mustard seeds and leaven teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard seed literally grew to be a tree, which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a transformation from within.. The kingdom of God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life, which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield to Jesus Christ, our lives are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says, "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2 Cor. 4:7). Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit?

Both parables indicate small beginnings, large endings, but in different ways. I believe that the Parable of the Mustard Seed teaches the destined greatness of the Kingdom. The Kingdom fulfilled by Jesus now looks insignificant, but its greatness will be apparent in its consummation at the end of the Age. I believe that the Parable of the Leaven teaches that, at present, the Kingdom is not fully manifest, but at the consummation in the Age to Come, it will be known to all. Meanwhile, it does its work of permeating human society, penetrating evil, and transforming lives.

These parables would have encouraged the disciples, most of whom were simple fishermen, that the process of building the Kingdom is really not difficult.

To all, these parables say,

Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven? How would this be encouraging to Jesus' disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom? How might it be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives

Luke 13:19-21(Ampl)- 19It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the wild birds [a]found shelter and roosted and nested in its branches. 20And again He said, To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21It is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of wheat flour or meal until it was all leavened (fermented).

Answer :

1. What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven?

The Point that Jesus wants to emphasize of The Parable of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven,is the importance of the WORD of God,over traditions and belief.Jesus tell this parable in reference to the healing of Woman(verse 11- And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.) during the Sabbath.Jesus did the healing in the Synagogue(10Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath; 13Then He laid [His] hands on her, and instantly she was made straight, and she [j]recognized and thanked and praised God.),and the Chief rebuked Jesus because He did the healing on the SABBATH DAY,which is against the their tradition as what the Law of Moses has told them:

Luke 13:14(Ampl)- 14But the [k]leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, There are six days on which work ought to be done; so come on those days and be cured, and not on the Sabbath day.

So therefore Jesus speak of the two mentioned parables in order to Contrast those who oppose His message/works,which is the WORK OF LOVE.Jesus just show to the people that compassion and Love for People(by healing the sick on the Sabbath) are just more than the customs and tradition of Man,who also does not observe the Sabbath, for they themselves led their domestic animal to drink during Sabbath, the very act also constitute Work.

2. How would this be encouraging to Jesus' disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom?

This would encourage His disciple,to have patience in waiting for the Kingdom to come..and emulate what Jesus has declared in the two parables,to TAKE THE WORD OF GOD,no matter how small or insignificant it is,at first..once it grows it would produce Big.

Parable of the Mustard seed-Luke 13:19(Ampl)- It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the wild birds [l]found shelter and roosted and nested in its branches.

If you notice what the Man do in the above parable:HE TAKE A GRAIN OF MUSTARD SEED AND PLANTED IN HIS OWN GARDEN-The grain of Mustard represent the Word of God,and the garden represent Man

They show that small things lead to big things--start small--will grow.

They would be encouraged by knowing His kingdom is coming, but it is starting out small.

They would be encouraged knowing that their end will not remain the same--God's promises will stand.

Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven? How would this be encouraging to Jesus' disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom?

Jesus is offering hope to the disciples to not give up, which is even applicable to our current day. Though it may appear that our prayer, fasting and study of the word seems insignificant, yet it will and shall bear much fruit. These scripture verses really, really encouraged me today. Though things may look one way today in essence they are nothing in comparison to what they will become in the future. As Saints of the Most High God, we are VICTORIOUS!!!

How might it be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives?

Again these verses offer hope and definitely or should increase our faith - knowing that what we do for the Lord today is going to manifest in the natural. Also God is able to take the little and make it into something so great, awesome and powerful......that is very encouraging.

Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven? To teach us that the little faith that we are all given as the measure, will over time and constant growth, grow into a larger product of our faith.

How would this be encouraging to Jesus' disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom? Well, just like a seed that must be planted would take time to grow to it

smile.gif 8a)Mustard seed-Faith can be as tiny as a mustard seed but with holy spirit it can grow from struggling beginnings, to flourish & be great & powerful. Leaven-even a small amount of yeast when it is worked in the dough will leaven a large amount of dough.Similar point small beginning grow into large endings.cool.gif B)This would have reassured disciples. An instant messianic kingdom was expected. So this was reassurance that the faith of a few disciples was enough with God

Jesus was illustrating the kingdom of God to the disciples through His parables. The parables were to explain the eventual rise to greatness of the kingdom of God.

How would this be encouraging to Jesus

Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven? How would this be encouraging to Jesus disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom? How might it be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives?

The primary idea of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven is that what is small now because of the Kingdom's influence will someday be very great. This will encourage Jesus disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom since they were discouraged about the insignificance of Jesus preaching in villages in a minor Roman province does not mean it will remain that way because the kingdom of God begins as small and insignificnant, but grows to become large and powerful. It will encourage people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives to stay strong and not give up and continue to believe that their efforts will one day grow big and people who experience poverty will become financially wealthy if they put their efforts into good use.

I think the point of the parable between the mustard seed and the leaven shows what a little bit of faith can grow to become. I think that this would be encouraging to His disciples because it inspires them to look at the overall big picture when Jesus Kingdom is in place. It should be encouraging to people who are experiencing smallness or poverty because in the end Jesus will provide and this is just a temporary state that we find ourselves in.

Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven?

The point of the two Parables is to show us that, the small beginnings we encounteer should not discourage us in seeking the Kingdom of God as by its influence we will come to great endings. Just because the Kingdom didn't seem very great as yet, Jesus is saying in these parables, doesn't mean that it will stay small. The Kingdom of God begins as small and insignificant, but grows to become large and powerful.

How would this be encouraging to Jesus' disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom?

The disciples could have been feeling hopeless and discouraged by the slow pace the Kingdom was growing, but by these Parables, they were assured that the Kingdom will become big; thus they should continue the preaching.

How might it be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives?

This is encouraging as the Parables also indicate to us that, we should not be discouraged by the problems we are currently encountering. We should not quit, but continue with the same faith.
