PAUL ALSO KNOWS THAT THE PHILIPIANS LOVE GOD AND THEY WERE LIVING THE GOOD LIFE PAUL'S EXPECTATIONS ARE OUT OF LOVE FOR GOD AND THE PHILIPIANS PAUL KNOWS IN HIS HEART THAT WHAT HE DOES IS FOR GOD'S GLORY AND KNOWS THAT GOD HAD CHOSEN HIM TO PREACH HIS WORD AND THE PHILIPIANS SHOWED PAUL THAT THEY WANTED TO DO THE SAME AND PAUL KNEW THIS. This, GOD will do because of their partnership with Paul in the gospel of Jesus Christ and because of their steadfast standing with Paul and his teachings. God will also stand with us out of HIS great mecry, if we try sincerely and stand for Christ and HIS teachings in our life and in this world. Once we accept Christ we begin our journal as a Christian until we meet our reward in Heaven. We will continue to be quided by the Holy Spirit. God will complete his work in us. This is one of my favorite scriptures/promises; "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begn a goodwork in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ" We are changed day by day, into the likeness of Christ Jesus, as long as we abide in Him; During those 'seasons' when I feel that I will always continue to stumble over sin....always 'fail', I can know with a certainty that God will finish the work he started in me 25 years ago. Up until I take my last breath, or until the second the Lord Jesus returns, [whichever comes first] God will still be 'working' to complete this 'good work' in me...in us! Changing us, most times unseen to the natural eye, into the likeness of his beloved Son. Remembering this helps a lot during days/seasons of apparent failure, doesn't it? What is the basis of Paul's confidence? On what basis can we expect God to do this for us? God can be depended upon to bring us to maturity in Him--if we stay close to Him and learn of Him! If we are not interested in studying and learning about Him and coming to know Him intimately, He does not drag us--kicking and screaming--to His presence! We must come to Him, humbly, confessing our sins against Him and asking His forgiveness--which means we turn from those sins and live for Him. Paul expects the Philippians to do this, and thus that the Lord God will bring them to perfection--in the same way He will do this for us. To finish out the work of perfection that God has begun in them .. (perfection=maturation) Why does he expect God to do this? It is not something we can do of ourselves. The desire must be there, but the actual changing begins and ends with God. What is the basis of Paul's confidence? Paul's confidence is in God. That God keeps His Word. He is no respecter of persons so He will do the same for us.If we follow His commands and praise and honor Him in all we do and say. Paul expects God to do the work of sanctification, a life long process for believers (until the day of Christ Jesus). He expects this and we can expect it because God has promised it as referenced in so many places in the Bible including the passage in Philippians 1:6. His confidence in God to mature the church and individuals believers is quite evident. The basis of this confidence is that he sees God at work in them already, by their fruit. My own confidence in this same expectation of maturity is based on God's continual grace and love manifested in Christ. After all, God never changes! The Philippians could have confidence in God because they knew who HE was what that he was in control of the future. There will be some conflicts upcoming--they will need to rely on this confidence. God didn't bring them this far to leave them out on their own he is faithful and true to those that seek him. What is the basis of Paul's confidence? Paul base his confidence in what he knows already that God is there at all times he will never leave you or forsake you. He is a living helping God. On what basis can we expect God to do this for us? God is no respecter of persons he will do for all what he did for anyone else he loves us all the same and he is faithful and true to his word. He cannot lie. Paul has a close relationship with the Lord and knows the Scriptures and the work of the Holy Spirit in his own life and trusts that the Lord will carry through His promises toward the Philippians. We can know through the Scriptures that God is faithful and we can see the hand of the Lord at work in our lives as we trust in His faithfulness, as we walk in close fellowship with the Lord. I have long enjoyed the old hymn, "GREAT IS THEY FAITHFULNESS" and found comfort in the words which speak of the faithfulness of the LORD. He always finishes what He begins. No one who has been brought by the Holy Spirit to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ will ever be lost. The Holy Spirit is responsible for our sanctification and He is always making us discover how sinful we are and causes us to turn to Jesus for our forgiveness and cleansing.
