What causes God to be jealous? God loved and protected Isreal just as a husband love and protects his wife, and supports her. Isreal was to be submissive to God just as the wife is to be submissive to her husband. Isreal was to obey God and worship Him only, be true to Him. The New Testament specifically calls us his bride. Kaitlin Posted September 20, 2007 Report Share Posted September 20, 2007 In what sense was God the Husband of Israel? ~The first thing that comes to mind is the book of Hosea, in which God crafts a beautiful metaphor of His love for unfaithful Israel, by having His prophet, Hosea, marry a prostitute. I think one of the reasons God chose to reveal Himself as the husband of Israel was that their unfaithfulness and lack of commitment to Him, as well as His grief and disappointment were very well likened to the feelings generated by an unfaithful wife. Also some of the characteristics of a husband would be that he found joy in his wife, as well as desired intimacy with her, also, that he was expected to be the provider and protector of his wife. God's feelings, as well as things he wanted to provide for Israel are represented well by this metaphor. What is the New Testament extension of this metaphor? ~We as the church are the bride of Christ, and should seek to please and honor Him with our words, actions, and sprirtual apperance. LIkewise, as the bridegroom, Christ is crazy about us, and cannot stand to be without us. The Jewish traditions that go with this are so amazing, I don't have time to go into it in great depth right now, but things like the cup of wine being offered in communion, Jesus building a place in heaven for us that is part of His Father's house, and things such as the kids' song "Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning..." are all things directly tied to the Jewish betrothal and marriage traditions, and they are something I would challenge eveyone to look into! What causes God to be jealous? ~Spiritual adultery and unfaithfulness toward Him. Also, if God sees that another "man" (religion or anything that could be an idol) that is harrassing or encouraging adultery against Him, He will confront the "man" in some way, and avenge the wrongs, whether it be in this life, or at the throne of judgement. I think perhaps one of the biggest things we can understand form this metaphor is that God desires intimacy with us. In the current state of things as far as marriage, divorce, adultery, etc. are concerned within our culture, it is easy to have a distorted view of God as husband. Just as God intended for the husband and wife to be "one", so God desires us to be one with Him. That was Jesus' prayer for all belivers right before He was crucified. Likewise, as we live on this earth, it is essential that we strive to have marriage relationships that would be worthy metaphors of the relationship God desires to have with us. God was the head of Israel like the husband is the head to his wife in marital relationship. But most, importantly, it is a love relationship. Israel, like the Church, is to love God like a bride loves her groom. A husband and wife relationship -- loving, faithful, and intimate. As I understand God, unfaithfulness to false gods of any sort cause God to become jealous because He is the One True God -- God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. He is the real deal and people worship and give honor and respect to fantasy. This must hurt God. Every since Israel became a country or called God's people because this verse says it all. God has been for Israel from the beginning and still is with Israel today. So, many many times we read the Bible and we witness God being a faithful husband to Israel. What is the New Testament metaphor? The church is the bride and God is the bridegroom. What causes God jealousy? When we do not spend time with Him during prayer & while we are doing our duties here on earth we do not think on Him throughout the whole day. We sometimes let our responsibilities get in our way that we forget God and doing other things that does not have anything to do with God. We allow other things before God and we let God come second. Nowadays, God also has a convenant with His church - the convenant of the Messiah. So in revelations 19:7, John uses the metaphor of the wedding of the Lamb with the church as His bride. God is jealous if His bride commits adultery/ has other gods. This can also be the greed for money since it distracts us from the Lord (1 Tim. 6:10). What causes God to be jealous? God chose Israel as the nation to show the world His grace and His love. Just as a man may chose a woman and betrothed her, God chose Israel, but they had to be faithful to Him. He would care for her. I think the Bible uses this metaphor- just as a marriage is holy- 2 people who are devoted to each other and love and care for each other, God wanted to show us how much He is devoted to His people and how much He cares for them. In the New Testament the Church is promised to be the bride of Christ, God's promise to His son. When 2 people marry, they promised to forsake all others and just be committed to each other. God is jealous because He does not want to share His bride with idols. He wants us to be committed to Him alone. If only we can realize that God is Love and is not going to harm us, but will care for us like the loving husband that He wants to be, we will be less prone to try and live our lives the way we want. God apart from being the Creator of all is carries out all the duties of a husband over His people Israel, He was completely jealous over them not wanting to see them after any other God, He reign and rule over His people, chose leaders for them, help, protect, provide, shield, love them. In the New Testament Jesus is the Bridegroom of the Church. Christ said in Jhn. 3:29a 'the bride belong to the bridegroom' and just like the five virgin with enough oil in their lamps was prepared and waited for the bridegroom we must be prepared and ready to wait no matter how long for the coming of Jesus and in whatever situation wait on Him and not return to our Egypt for help for our help come from God alone who made the Heaven and the Earth. He is one with them and they are one with Him; He has a marriage like relationship with them. God is the head, protector, and provider for the people of Israel. In the New Testament, Christ is the husband and the Church is His bride; He is united as one with the church. He provides and protects the church. The worship of idols or other images, and things that are not God Himself or takes our attention away from Him, causes Him to become jealous. In an analogous way God chose what would eventually become Israel as His bride. If they hadn't rebelled God would have given them all good things and prospered them beyond measure, as an earthly husband would do for his wife if he had the resources. The Christian Church is the Bride of Christ, God's Son. Just as in a marriage covenant where the husband and wife are to be leaving and cleaving to each other, God wanted Israel to cleave to the Lord, for His covenant with them was similar to the marriage covenant. God was committed to Israel and He loved her and He declares in the Old Testament many times that He is the husband to Israel. But Israel was like an unfaithful wife, always cheating on her Husband and going after other gods. The extension of this metaphor that we find in the New Testament, is that of Jesus being the Bridegroom and the church being His bride. Just as in Jewish marriage ceremony where the engagement is tantamount to legally binding marriage, Jesus has espoused the church to Himself. Again in the Jewish marriage analogy, the actual wedding takes place when the Groom’s father declares it to happen, once the house or the addition to the father’s house for the newly-weds is complete. Jesus said, I go to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to where I am. Once He takes us then the marriage celebration happens for the Bride and the Lord. When there is a covenant between the Lord and when we go after other priorities other than God, He is jealous. In our minds jealousy has a negative connotation. But when the Holy God has jealousy it is in a positive sense. He knows what our wandering away from Him can happen to us. He is our husband and protector and Savior. God is jealous when we stray from Him and commit adultery by replacing Him with other gods or things instead of Him.
