The Lord replaced Gideon's terror of dying with His Peace and reassurance that He was with him. In what sense did the Lord offer peace to Gideon? The Lord saw Gideon hiding and trembling in terror, then spoke to him as He saw Gideon, as a "mighty man of valor", to change Gideon's perception of the situation, with God in control of the fight with the Midianites. Gideon prepared a sacrifice and sensing he was in the presence of the Lord asked for a sign. When the offering was placed on a rock, fire miraculously burnt the offering. Gideon was at war, and he was fearful of the Midianites. Then he was visited by the angel of the Lord, this made him fear more, for no one, who saw the Lord face to face, ever lived. But God was with him and assured him, he would not die. This assurance get him peace and hope, that was why Gideon named the altar "the Lord is Peace." I think when Gideon realised that he was talking to the Angel of the Lord, he became convinced of his sinfulness and thought he was going to die. When the Angel told him that he will not die, he knew he could trust God and the peace of God that fills every believers hart, also filled his. He called the altar the Lord is Peace to remind him of it. Gideon knew that he would not die, but also that God will help him to deliver the people out of the hands of the enemy. I believe the message of the Angel of the Lord, God's promise to go with him to war, consumption of the bread and meat by the fire gave him the assurance that the Lord is with him and trusted that the Lord will perfom what He has said. Gideon was called a man of valour. He knew about the promises of God to His forefathers and He reminded God of His words and asked why He has not kept His words to deliver them and allow Israel to be destroyed by the Midianites. When the Lord said “peace” to him and told him not to be afraid, he wasn’t going to die; it put him more at ease giving him peace. He built the altar as a sign that God is a friend and not an enemy. He saved his life by not slaying him and Gideon built an altar as a promise if we follow him we will be His friend and would bestow blessings upon him. The altar stood for a symbol of peace. God had told him: Peace . . you are not going to die. It was believed that if anyone saw God they'd not survive the experience. In what sense did the Lord offer peace to Gideon? Then and there God placated Gideon, who thought that he would surely die from having seen and spoken to the Angel of the Lord. Later, in the course of delivering Israel from the Midianites, God showed Gideon that it was not by force of arms that he would win the day, but by God's mighty power. The Hebrew word for peace is shalom. We understand peace as an absence of strife or war. But in Hebrew, shalom means much deeper than that. It has the connotation of restoring something to its original place or bring back to completeness or wholeness. Shalom when used in greeting is actually a prayer for the well-being of the person, so that they have the very best in life. Gideon, who was hiding himself from the marauding Midianites had an encounter with God Himself, who appeared before him as the Angel of God. Because of this Gideon feared for his life, for no one can see God and live. Everyone who had a theophany had the same response of fear in them. Instead He gave Gideon the assurance that the Lord is with him and this is what caused Gideon to name the altar “the LORD is Peace”. The children of Israel had rebelled against God and was not enjoying His favor. It was at this time that Gideon had an encounter with God in which God assured His presence with him. This was a restoration of relationship to the nation of Israel. A restoration of relationship, will result in them being a majority against the Midianites. For, in whosoever’s side God is, that is the winning side. He realized that God wants the very best for them and this realization gave him peace and rest. He knew that God had good intentions toward him. The Lord offered peace to Gideon in that God was a friend to Him and he had nothing to fear. Through you My favour is going to rest upon this people once more. So when the Lord offered peace to Gideon, it was in the sense that He did not come to bring judgement to him and his people but instead to bring deliverance and blessings. It re minds me of when another altar was built by the tribes that settled on the east side of Jordan River. An altar to the glory of God ! Gideon did not have to have fear; but he was endued with peace of mind for a mighty mission. If he had fear, he couldn't concentrate while executing his mission. God did not come to bring strife but peace with him. God was and is a friend the best friend a person can ever have. God comes to bring blessings. That in itself gives peace.
