Q4. Examples of Worldliness

Recommended Posts

Q4: 1) Could be addictions to meds, food, cigarettes, drugs, alchohol, etc.

2) Greed. buying more and more things for the house; clothes, etc.

3) Put on airs. Wanting others to think I'm better than I am.

We love God, yet we don't ask ourselves if what we want lines up with His will. It is a subtle ploy of Satan for America - "keep their minds on things other than God and His Kingdom work".

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?

1) **** of the flesh. 2) **** of the eyes. 3) Pride

Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

Its very difficult for us to fully comprehend the scope of our selfish desires and pride. This world and society is driven by selfish desires. The more you make, the greater you are, the more you are admired and recognized at work / socially, the better person you are thought to be in this world. When in reality we are fooled and blinded by the evil ways of this world. Sometimes daily stresses of having to survive, feed your family or 'feel accepted' take over if we do not have a full understanding of who truly provides for us and protects us.

Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

You cannot serve the Lord and money both. You have to give up your worldly ways in order to stay in touch. Jesus makes this easy, the Holy Spirit conforms you to what God wants you to be. Even though those worldly desires will always be there tempting you, God provides love and protection.

Sins covered in John’s examples are the desire for things that are forbidden and not of the Spirit, desires of the flesh, seeing and wanting, impulsiveness toward something, greed, selfishness, and bragging or boasting (arrogance) about possessions or circumstances. We have difficulty seeing the dangers of these things because of the worldly distractions that are going on around us and we focus on material things that are visible to us. Our priorities are not in order because we don’t think about what we can’t see. What we store up is for the “worldly future” here on earth instead of the “eternal future” in the Kingdom of God. This is harmful because it takes us off track and away from God when we find ourselves caught up in earthly things that are soon to pass away.

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives? Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves? Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

The **** of the flesh, the **** of the eyes, and pride are the three examples of worldiness that John gives. All sin is wrapped around these three examples. These three examples stem from the love of self and the gratification of self. Natural man has made himself God.

We tend to justify in some way these sins in our own lives making them hard to discern. That is why we must remain in prayer and Bible study. This why we must intentionally seek to grow in the wisdom, knowledge, and grace of Jesus Christ. In this way the blinders can be removed.

Worldiness equals darkness and death.

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?

Just about ALL kinds of sins. Greed, coveting, pride, idolitary (where we worship or strongly desire the things God has given us, rather than God Himself) selfish ambition, self exhultation, you name it.

Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

Because they're subtle. Those three things were the exact temptations Satan used against Jesus after His fast in the desert. Firstly He was tempted to perform a miracle to feed Himself. Jesus rightly stopped Satan in his tracks by telling him He didn't need bread alone, but every word from the mouth of God!

Secondly Satan tempted Jesus to throw Himself down from the temple and to call on angels to save Him from death. This temptation was to try and make Jesus invoke Godly power to improve His earthly life. (The **** of the flesh)

Jesus rebuffed Satan by telling him the scriptures say not to put the Lord your God to the test.

Thirdly Satan tempted Jesus to worship him in return for him (Satan) giving him the world. That's the pride of life right there. To forsake God, His Father, to worship someone or something else to gain what He wanted, the rulership of Mankind, without obeying God's plan for Him.

Many sins are committed through us taking shortcuts rather than walking the path God has prepared for us.

Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

Before we realize it, we're no different to everyone else in the rat race. We have to maintain our focus on Jesus and not on worldly things.

4a)The kind of sins John states here are i/Desires/longing of body/flesh for things that are forbidden ii/**** of the eyes-sexually&seeing/ wanting everything for ourselves iii/boasting/arrogance in own wealth or outward circumstances.
b)The enemy is sly &cunning. It is so easy for us to be sidetracked by media, work targets, on things temporal, getting our priorities wrong, instead of using time& resources on doing God’s will, being his disciple in thought and action. Need to allow Holy Spirit to lead us,sharing God’s love with others, accumulating treasure in heaven.
c)We cannot serve2 masters,&are in a spiritual battle,-Worldliness deceives us that it appears it is our future, but it is not everlasting.Whatever minimise our walk with God,keeps us away from storing up treasure in heaven, and leads into the paths of darkness, selfish living,&acts that could harm ourselves &others. He who does the will of God,abides in him forever.

The three kinds of sins that are covered by the worldliness that John gives is the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes and the pride of life. This is difficult for us to discern in ourselves because some of these things bring great pleasure to us. Therefore we cannot see why they can be bad for us. These things are so harmful to our future because they do not please God.

There are three sins that John gives examples of in this passage; 1) **** of the flesh, 2) **** of the eyes, and 3) pride of life. We are but mortal man.  We sin.  We at times will desire something that is forbidden.  We will look at a member of the opposite sex and we can be real proud of possessions.  Sometimes we just plain do not see this in ourselves.  By being of the world and wanting these things which are fleeting and do us no good after a time we endanger our eternal life with Christ.  We do not need these worldly things to live with the Father.

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives? Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves? Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

"For everything in the world -- the cravings of sinful man, the **** of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does -- comes not from the Father but from the world." (2:16)

John gives us three examples of worldly sins.  The first is the ******* or craving of wants and needs.  The second is *******, be in sexual or ******* of things.  The third is a prideful or boasting of what one has or does and not recognizing what comes from God.  We often can get so tied up into worldly things because we might try to be like others or we aren't focused on the things that God wants and we want worldly things.  We could get so involved in trying to be successful, for example, that we no longer recognize what is right by God standards.

What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives? Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves? Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

cravings of sinful man: letting the things we are interested in and desire become consuming passions and things we pursue and chase after:   sex, the latest electronics, entertainment, food, etc.

**** of his eyes:  letting the things we see become the things we want for ourselves:  ***********, uncontrollable purchasing, etc.

Boasting: pride in self-accomplishment.  I think this can happen as an individual or as a society.  We think we are so smart and forget that all that we have and are and have done that is good is from God.

What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?

The three examples John gives for examples of worldliness include; **** of the flesh, **** of the eyes, and the pride of life.

Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

Some are simply desires we are born with, thinking un-Godly thoughts upon seeing an attractive member of the opposite sex for example. If a person, even a Christian is not brought up with Christian values can basically be held captive by things which were part of our life before knowing Christ. There is also the fact that the tempter is very clever and always on the prowl and knows how to out-wit one whose guard is down.

Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

Because it keeps our eyes from being focused on God and is more oft than not a sure-fire path to getting tripped up.

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17)
What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?
Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?
Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

Worldliness is characterized by the craving for physical pleasure; we have this preoccupation with gratifying our physical desires. There is also the craving for everything we see; we want and want and want, never having enough; we covet and accumulating things, bowing to the god of materialism. Finally, there is pride in our achievements and possessions; in other words, an obsession with our status or importance. By contrast, God values self-control, a spirit of generosity, and a commitment to humble service.
Because of our pre-occupation with these sins, we often do not recognise these sins in our lives. We are so self-centred and caught up in this rat-race.
Worldliness has no future; the world is passing away and a new order is coming; one where our Lord will reign. So we do not live for a world that is passing away; rather we know that “he who does the will of God abides forever”.

A. The **** of the flesh, **** of the eyes and the pride of life

Q. Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

A. Because there is a thin line between a normal healthy desire and the one that lands us into sin. We have to be sensitive to the spirit of God to know when we have reach the boarder of what is right. less we cross and land into sin

Q. Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

A. Because it has an end and will vanish here on earth while we still have eternity to go through ( with God and reward or without Him with bitter consequences of eternal death)

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives? Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves? Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

The three sins John gives , **** of flesh( all that we have in our primal human nature), **** of eyes ( unmoral as well as greed, coveting), and boasting and pride ( loving the self, all about I ). We all have our flaws, shortcomings, and are here in the flesh, so we fail at times and act according to the flesh, and when we transgress we are the last ones to admit to our mistakes, faults, and shortcomings. We find it very difficult to admit that "we were wrong".

Living in this worldly realm and not recognizing when we are drawn deeper in to it will pull us deeper in to darkness , and we will loose the light shining on our paths and stumble. The future in the world is short, but the spiritual future in the Kingdom of God is forever and this is what we do not want to harm by falling to the world.

What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?

I was struck by the importance of keeping '****' at bay sexually ... flesh and eyes, though obviously this includes things like materialistic urges, the need for acclaim and recognition and the desire for the raw power to lord it over others. People seem to have a drive for one or another primitive, driven sin at different times of life. My (atheistic) father used to tell me that people would fall on their sword to get money, sex or power. That could sum John's three examples. I think I have fallen on all three!

Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

I don't know. Most people are ensconced in the world through their work or children, so the time to reflect deeply is short. Most people, too, just don't like to think critically about themselves. But with the Holy Spirit within us, it is His responsibility to point out sins that we possess and need to work on, not all at once, but sequentially. I think, too, that people trapped in sinful mindsets have difficulty finding a path out. Men addicted to **** come to mind, here, but other mental "addictions" are just as powerful.

Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

It's also harmful to our present, Pastor Ralph, and since we live in a moving series of presents, it's harmful all our lives. To live a worldly life is to live a lesser life. John is saying that though our desires will disappear with our death,  we will continue on in heaven shallower for each unconquered worldly desire. To live fully is to live in a way that ignores the world to the greatest extent possible. This isn't easy. We are in but not of the world. And many things in the world seem beautiful -- great architecture thrills me, for example. If I put architecture before God, if my cravings for beautiful things, aesthetic cravings, are stronger than my cravings for God, these seemingly morally neutral desires are sinful and harmful to my future.

(1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?

**** is the broadest sin presented by John.  **** isn’t only “of the flesh” but of any desire for something forbidden, which eventually leads to rebellion against God.  Then he discusses the eyes.  The eyes are usually what leads man to commit sin, for as we see something and find we crave it, we desire it, ignoring the consequences to our eternal salvation.  Finally, John reviews our innate want to boast about things that we think we accomplished alone; an arrogance in one’s self.  We “preach” in the street like the Pharisees, calling attention to ourselves instead of towards God. Better to pray in the closet and give all the glory to our Father.

Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

We become blind to God.  Something great happens in our life and we think that we alone have accomplished this moment of success.  We forget God’s hand in our lives, we “fall away.”  Without God, we lack wisdom.  Therefore we struggle lo look inwardly, for fear that we might discover that we are “less” than we imagined, and weak without God.

Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

Anything accomplished in the flesh will be left behind when we die.  Everything store up is lost to us, and left for others.  We must remain laser focused on that which will keep us in the covenant of eternal life: loving God, believing that Jesus lived as a man, and that He died for our sins on the cross.  Only then will we rest in the Kingdom of God.
