"The Israel of God' today are the believing Jew and the believing Gentile who have believed that Jesus is the Messiah. Who is excluded from this group? Excluded from this group are those who still hold the Law for their salvation. How is Romans 11:17-25 designed to temper Gentile pride? The Gentile pride is tempered in these verses bing reminded that it is by the grace of God, "the root" that they can be in the group called "the Israel of God." We were grafted into the original tree by His mercy & grace, not because we were so special. Original branches broken off can be grafted in again if they come to a believing faith. The Israel of God today is those who are genuine believers who Paul compared to these Jews, who are in a sense Israel, but are not "of God". The same goes for the Gentile believer who teach they can continue to walk in the flesh, that they don't have to follow God's laws by the leading of the Spirit. They are not "of God". God reminds us, there have always been a faithful remnant of true Israelites, and He is looking for the faithful remnant of true Gentile believers, who will comprise "the Israel of God". Paul was destroying the arguments of these Jews, for the “true Israel of God” is those who have put their trust in God, His Son, and are following the Spirit's leading Believers are the Israel of God, nevertheless, Israel refers to the Jewish people, we the wild olive tree are also now "the Israel of God" we are now brothers in Christ. Who is excluded from this group? How is Romans 11:17-25 designed to temper Gentile pride? If some of the branches were broken off, that is, unbelieving individual Jews, like the ones Paul was talking about, and not the whole Jewish people, for Paul being a Jew certainly wasn't broken off. And the wild olive tree, the Gentile’s, were grafted in and have become equal sharers in the rich root of God's cultivated olive tree, then they better not boast against the natural branches, neither the ones still in place, the Jewish believers, and not the ones broken off, those who do not believe. Gentile PRIDE in having been joined to the "chosen people" is utterly out of place, particularly when directed against those very people! Paul wrote elsewhere, "After all, what makes you so special? What do you have that you didn’t receive as a gift? And if in fact it was a gift, why do you boast as if it weren't. If they boast it is because of the "FLESH" causing strife like the Jewish men were doing, they are "not of God". I am so thankful that I have been grafted into the tree whose roots are that of Jewish Paul, and I have a heart like Ruth’s, "Your people Israel will be my people, your God, the God of Israel will be my God", my hearts cry is because Christ has grafted me into His Father's everlasting covenant with Israel. This is why I am praying for the "PEACE OF JERUSALEM" so that one day those who are not of "the Israel of God" be they Jew or Gentile will all be united to the same tree, whose roots are that of Israel, established by God Almighty. Thank you for bringing to us the study of Galatians. It is always amazing to me what Joy is found when I study to show myself approved. Romans 11: 17-25 is designed to temper Gentile pride by warning them to stand by their faith and not to be proud of themselves otherwise, if they loose their faith, they will also be cut out. All whom have faith in Jesus; all that that we might be justified by the faith of Christ Jesus, and not by the works of the law; all that now live by / through faith of faith of the Son of God, who loved them, and gave us Himself for those the believes in Him. (Romans 2:28,29). Who is excluded from this group? Those that do not put on Christ, those to do not have faith in the work of Christ. How is Romans 11:17-25 designed to temper Gentile pride? Wrongful pride is something that God hates, if one should boast about their being of Christ and disdain others they have fell into the trap of supposing that they deserved to be saved. Someone who hold this thought has allowed the spirit of haughtiness to overshadow the Fruit of Spirit, whereby their vision is obscured and they disdainfully ignore the truth that no one could ever be saved except upon the basis of God's unmerited love and favor. Just as there is a grafting, their also is a pruning, upon judgment some will be surprised and they will say as was said in Matthew 7:21-29, however the Lord will say, ” I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." In Matthew 21:43 we read what Jesus said to the Jewish leaders, ‘The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.’ And in 1 Peter 2:9 Peter identifies that nation as the family of God, ’But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.’ All unbelievers will be excluded from this group. In Romans 11:17-25 we read how the nation of Israel was the first to enjoy a close relationship with our Heavenly Father, being God’s ancient, chosen earthly people. But they rejected the Messiah and they lost this position of ‘favourite son’. Because of their faith the Gentiles were included as children of God, but Paul warns the Gentiles not to adapt a holier-than-thou attitude towards the Jews or boast of any superiority. Every believer has been saved by grace ALONE....our faith in Jesus' sacrificial death grafted us as wild branches into the Olive Tree, and we stand in awe and reverential fear of this astonishing privilege! The Jews as a nation (the cultivated branches) were cut off and set aside for the time being due to their rejection of Messiah Jesus, but in "that day" they will mourn both corporately as a nation and as individuals for their unbelief and rejection of Jesus and will be grafted in again, in faith...and we will be one unified "family (Olive) tree" to the Glory of God! The Israel of God today is all who believe that Jesus died for their sins, rose from the dead and have faith in Jesus for the salvation of their souls. Who is excluded? Anyone still under the law who does not accept Jesus as their righteousness and Savior. Romans 11:17-25 reminds Gentile believers that the Jews who did not accept Christ were cut away for their unbelief. They were once a favored nation, but they rejected His Son and paid a penalty for that. Under the new covenant, Jews and Gentiles alike were accepted through belief in Jesus, but the warning is to not become proud. If He cut away His beloved Israel for unbelief and grafted in the Gentile because of faith, then they were not to boast. If God didn't spare the natural branches, He would not spare them either if they fall away! They were to consider God's sternness (as shown to the Jews) and His kindness (as shown to the Gentile) Only those who continue in His mercy and kindness through Jesus remain. Jew and gentile became sisters and brothers. God formerly gave the Jews the honor of being His own chosen people. Which began with Abraham and his offspring's as God's chosen people,heirs to His Kingdom. When God became flesh in the form of His only Son, He walked among ALL people of the earth, both gentile and Jew were invited to drink of the cup of salvation. Anyone who believes in the grace and salvation of the cross of Jesus Christ comprise the Israel of God today. Who is excluded from this group? Anyone who does not accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. It is possible to fall out of favor with God and be accepted,"grafted" back into root of the tree. But your faith must be strong, you must accept Jesus, repent of sins and seek sanctification through the Holy Spirit. Otherwise you will be completely cut off from the tree which nourishes you and you will suffer certain decay. That being said, no one is truly excluded. They may chose on their own accord to leave the tree or fall from the tree due to some other circumstances which cause them to become spiritually sick, as a branch withered at times, it can once again thrive, so it is with those who fall into unbelief. But with the restriction that they must believe and produce fruit then only will they be grafted back in. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled. We as gentiles should not feel superior to God's chosen people. We're all equal who, by faith in Jesus Christ alone have been redeemed. If God so 'cut off' His own Chosen people for unbelief how much more readily will He cut others off. The branches are nourished only through the root. We must never be so conceited or "puffed up" to believe we can survive without the root ( Our Father God). We may fall away and be grafted back, ONLY because the tree loves His branches, and doesn't want to lose not even a one, but we must have faith in the root to survive.Just as Jesus, our Shepard will look for one lost sheep, so God will find one fallen branch. Notice the sheep always comes home being held in Jesus' arms, or following very closely at the feet of Jesus, a completely helpless sheep. Content to be found and saved by the Shepard. Humbled. We must never lose our humility. Not only drink the nourishment from the root but nourish other branches that seek to be nourished as well.. They are those, both Jew and Gentile, who accept that their own righteousness "is as filthy rags" and believe that their salvation is by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ. Those who are excluded from this group are those who walk according to the flesh; to the standards of their own righteousness. We are grafted into Abraham's lineage and become children of God and co-heirs with Christ not from our own source, but from the Jewish lineage. Praise God! Paul makes it perfectly clear that the only reason the Judaizers wanted them to be circumcised is so that they could say, “I told you so”. They didn’t even really care if they obeyed the Torah as long as they could boast of having gained their adherence to what part of the law that they preached. It wasn’t for any other reason other than they could boast that they had conned the folks at Galatia and thus pat themselves on the back for doing such. because by doing so, they basically made the cross null and void and relieved them of their own response to what Yahushua had done for them. By causing these folks to do what they thought that they should do, it made them look as if they were of such importance that maybe others would ‘think’ that these people were ‘good law keepers’. I think we all autta be careful in this area. Just because we believe something doesn’t make it necessarily so. It is only how we see it. Scripturally we can prove anything we want but that is not God’s plan. We can twist the scriptures just as good as satan can but we aught not to do that. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. This is a pretty bold statement for Paul to make and if it is true that he actually wrote this with his own hand then I can certainly understand why he saved this statement to pen himself. It is so easy to get caught up in our own flesh. This is why Paul has said elsewhere, ¶ Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. ~ 2nd Corinthians 5:16 WE ARE NOT DIVORCED FROM OUR PAST, BUT IT IS IN THE PAST AND WE MUST CONTINUALLY KEEP WHAT IS IN THE PAST, IN THE PAST. The Bible is a rule of our faith and in it we can find the ways that are God’s ways and His thoughts that are not ours, but no where do I find (So far at least) that our ways and our thoughts should not be in alignment with His because I believe that they are supposed to be. This is the new creation when we walk in this ordination. He wants us to know how to live in the future kingdom, so we are blessed that we can learn how to do so now. The Israel of God’ If we were to just take that text alone we could make out of it anything we like. But I tend to think that the whole verse really says all we need to know: Galatians 6:16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. All those who follow scripture, the ordinances, the statutes and the law, listening to the Holy Spirit and responding accordingly, (rule), peace and mercy will be upon them. Living our lives with-in the framework of the law is where we are blessed. These who walk within this path are those who are the children of the God of Israel are walking with in the boundaries that God has laid down. Peace, goodness and blessing, grace and kindness and mercy upon us and upon all Israel, His people. As many as order their lives by this standard, these are the Sons of God. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not. And how sad this truth is. Life as followers ‘of a truth’ do not have easy lives, but our lives have a goal and a meeting at the end of it with our Lord Yahushua who will introduce us to His Father. Yes we all bear the mark of our Lord and King because daily our bodies mind of the flesh is being put to it’s death, laid down in submission to our Lord. Who is excluded from this group? Anyone who boasts that they are the chosen of Israel or the called of Israel need to just be reminded that God is the tree of life and we need only to look to Him keeping in mind ; And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. If we get so hauty in our spirit, we might just get kicked out of the camp. Anyone who has rejected Christ is not a part of this group. Gentiles should not boast of their new position because they have been grafted in by faith and can be cut off by unbelief. Everyone who believes in the work of Jesus on the cross for their salvation and not on law, are the Israel of God today. The believing Jew and the believeing Gentile alike form the Isarel of God. I believe that that those that do not believe in Christ are the ones that are going to be excluded from this group. We cannot take pride in the fact that people were cut out of the opportunity for salvation. Yes it was by their own free will and choice, but it is a sad day. Galatians 6:16 what comprises "the Israel of God" today is that all who follow the belief in Christ have now replaced Israel and it's promises that God made to them. The children of Israel seem to be the one's excluded from this group. In Roman's 11:17-25 Paul tempers the Gentile pride by telling them they have been grafted into the vine and the roots (Christ) support the vine. Now if Israel can be drafted out and the gentiles in, then the church should not be too prideful because they can be drafted back out of the vine.
