Recommended Posts

He was told to speak to the rock, instead, he struck it twice in anger.

He sinned by disobedience and pride, not giving God the place he should have. He totally acted in anger.

Leaders must repent and ask forgiveness

He told him to carry the rod Aaron along with Aaron and speak to the rock. He struck the rock with the staff after stealing God's glory by saying must we bring water from this rock. disobedience, pride, unfaithfulness. He angry with the people, and

let his pride get in the way. We must all repent when we let pride interfer with giving God His rightful praise and glory. He alone is Holy and True.

[/Kasimu]

What did God tell Moses to do to bring water out of the rock?

He told him with his rod in hand and the people around him to speak to the rock (Num.20:8a)

What did Moses actually do?

Moses struck the rock twice.

In what way did he sin?

He disobeyed God.

What emotions and attitudes were behind his sin, do you think?

Moses was hungry with the rebellious act of the people. I think Moses somehow forgot that its God's power to get water for those people from the rock and not his (Ref. the phrase him and his brother Aron used (must we fetch you water out of this rock? Num.20:10).

What must leaders do when they sin in these ways?

They must repent their sins because the Bible tells us in I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Moses was told by God to speak to the rock to bring forth water for the people and animals, instead, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff. He sinned by not following God's holy instrctions. He sinned by not following God's instructions in the matter, he also referred to himself and Aaron as the ones to bring forth the water, not God Himself. Moses seemed to be 'fed up' with the people and consumed by the anger he felt towards their nay saying attitude. Perhaps he was too consumed by his emotions to realize his great wrong. This should be a great lesson to us to recognize when our emotions are drowning out the voice of God. When God reveals to leaders the errors of our ways, they should immediately repent of their sins, confess, and give God the glory for the relationship they are allowed with Him.

God told Moses to SPEAK to the rock (verses 7-8).

Moses however STROKE the rock (verse 11).

So Moses didn't follow God's instructions, and besides this he also took the honour.

Now Moses must have been tired of those people, and I guess he rather would have hit them with the rod.

So it was anger and frustration that made him do that.

When leaders sin, they must repent, just like other people.

Moses was to bring water from the rock by speaking to it.

Instead he struck the rock twice with his staff.

Moses sinned because he struck the rock instead of speaking to it like God had told him to. Second he said,"must I bring you water from this rock?" He was giving the glory to himself instead of to God.

I believe the emotions and attitudes behind Moses sin was that he was more or less sick and tired of the people complaining about every little thing. He'd just about had it.

When church leaders sin in these days they need to confess before their congregations and the Lord, asking forgiveness.

God told Moses to speak to the rock. Instead Moses struck the rock twice with his staff. Moses' sins - disobedience and not giving God the glory. He was angry with the Israelites and perhaps a little arrogant. When they sin, leaders must immediately repent and seek God's forgiveness and mercy.

9a)God asked Moses to take staff &with Aaron gather the Israelite community &before their eyes speak to the rock to obtain the water the people wanted.

b)Moses obeyed re staff,Aaron &people gathering but instead of speaking to rock he rebelled in his anger at their complaints, and struck the rock for water as he had doneEx17:6.

c)He sinned because he didn’t trust God enough to be faithful, and allowed anger sin to rule his actions. He also knew just speaking alone would not be visible to the people gathered,so was tempted to take over, striking rock, rather than obeying exactly God’s command

d)If leaders sin in these ways, they should own up when realise their mistake, repent for his actions, apologising to the people they lead and seek the Lord’s forgiveness and mercy for them & people they are seeking to lead. Then continue with task they have been given trusting&obeying God wholeheartedly like Caleb.

Q1. (Numbers 20:1-13)

What did God tell Moses to do to bring water out of the rock?

What did Moses actually do?

In what way did he sin?

What emotions and attitudes were behind his sin, do you think?

What must leaders do when they sin in these ways?

God told Moses to speak to the rock to bring forth water.

Moses assembled the congregation and  referred to them as rebels and said "Must we bring you water out of this rock?"  Then he struck the rock twice and  water came out.  Moses was angry.  He did what he did in anger.

He did not follow God's instruction to the letter.  Instead of speaking to the rock, he struck the rock.  Also it was as if he meant that it was him and Aaron that actually performed the miracle of bringing forth the water.  It was as if he was  letting the congregation look to them for the miracle and not God.  Like he was taking the glory for himself. It was disobedience and not giving God the glory.

The leaders or any one for that matter must repent and seek God's forgiveness.

In this passage, God seems harsh to Moses even though He was protecting His own holiness. In another harsh-like/holiness passage, Uzzah was struck dead for trying to keep the ark of the covenant from tilting precariously and then falling. Thankfully, in other biblical passages God seems more kind. Much of his relationship with David was a display of grace and kindness, for example.

Still, I sympathize with Moses. He had been on the receiving end of the Israelites' whining, grumbling, fear and avarice for many years!  Think of this.  It is understandable that in a moment of frustration, moses would speak to the people and not the rock.

God explained His response, in a way, by exposing Moses' motive for speaking to the people harshly: Because you didn’t trust me, didn’t treat me with holy reverence in front of the People of Israel, you two aren’t going to lead this company into the land that I am giving them.” Message version.

But, immediately before this, had not Moses laid himself before God and His glory? At that moment, Moses must have trusted God. In other biblical passages, those who see His face die. Since Moses didn't die, God must have been pleased with Moses.

As an aside, Moses had talked to God face-to-face on prior occasions. He had seen God's face (taken literally). But in the tabernacle, when Moses asked to see His glory, God responded by telling him that no one would live after seeing His face. I don't understand this.

What is righteous anger anyway? Was Moses justified in his anger toward the Israelites? To me, it seems so. But to God ... apparently not: God saw Moses anger as a lack of faith and reverence toward Him. I must change my idea of righteous anger, then. What I see as justified anger, God sees as a lack of public humility.

This passage ends with God revealing Himself as holy. God saw Moses' anger as an affront to His holiness.

His own holiness, therefore, is important to God. In fact, God didn't let Moses have any earthly reward for his travails. Moses didn't see the promised land.
