What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1st Corinthians 12:7?

Given for the common good - “The evidence of the Spirit’s presence is given to each person for the common good of everyone.”

Gifts are given to build up the body and strengthen God's people.

According to Ephesians 4:11?

Five spiritual gifts -- apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers - Spiritual gifts, especially the core gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher, are designed to (1) equip people for ministry, (2) build up the church, and ultimately (3) to bring God's people to maturity and unity (Ephesians 4:11-12).

What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?

The body isn’t built up, edified, strengthened, effective, weakened, out of sequence.

Through Peter God say, “As each of you has received a gift (a particular spiritual talent, a gracious divine endowment), employ it for one another as [befits] good trustees of God’s many-sided grace [faithful stewards of the extremely diverse powers and gifts granted to Christians by unmerited favor].”

a. According to : (1 Cor. 12:7)  Gifts are given to build up the body and strengthen God's people. (Ephesians 4: 11)  Christ has given some to be apostles,  prophets,  evangelists, and pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for works of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.

b. The church will not be strong but weak and some even fall away from the faith. The church must be living, each one doing their part.  Not just left up to the Pastor and staff. but each member being built up and strengthened to go out and do the works of the ministry, using the spiritual gifts given them.

Q1. (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7? According to Ephesians 4:11? What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?

1Corinthians 12:7  To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (ESV)

The reason for spiritual gifts is for the advancement of the church and also those who are already members of the church. Anything which comes from God can be put to use to serve His purpose, but to those who don’t, well, what you have will be taken away from you.

1 Corinthians  12:7:   Spiritual gifts are given so that believers can help each other and as they do this, they become more empowered by the Holy Spirit. They do not focus on their experiences but on others, helping those in need, sharing their faith with others.

Ephesians 4:11:   God gave certain gifts and associated them with certain key positions in the church.  Christ equips these people with gifts and positions to train, equip and protect his sheep.  Christ himself gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors  all given spiritual gifts so that they can continue the expansion of God's words and churches.  They were chosen so that all of His people could receive the truth to live right and good lives.

There becomes dissention in God’s churches

 2. We have been given spiritual gifts to equip people for ministry, build up the church, and ultimately and to bring God's people to maturity and unity.

They are weakened. They do not grow, be edified, or strengthened.

Spiritual gifts are to lift and build the body of Christ as well as empower and strengthen the church. Spiritual gifts also are to be used to reach out to the lost.

The Holy Spirit gives the gifts according what God wants us to have. We all do not have exactly the same gifts. That way the body of Christ can be exalted through the use of the gifts.

A person not using their gifts may lose them and also will be frustrated throughout their life as they are not experiencing the fullness and joy in life that God intended we have through a relationship with Him.

I'm a bit curious as to how the church has dissention within if the gifts are not used. I have not heard of that, its the reason I'm asking......Thanks

QUESTION 1_LESSON 8 (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11)

What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7?

The spiritual gifts were for the benefit of everyone and not for personal gain.

According to Ephesians 4:11?

The gifts of the spirit would see some become apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers for the purpose of getting people fine-tuned for ministry, building the Church and nurturing unity through maturity in the people. (Ephesians 4:12) “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?
There will be untrained people in the ministry and the Church will be starved of committed workers and be weak with a stunted growth. It will have the body of Christ built on a week foundation.

The purpose of the spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7 is for the common good of all. Meaning for everyone in the church. According to the verse in Ephesians it is for the church. I believe their gifts are taken away if they are not used for their intended purposes in the church.

Q1. (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11)
What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7?
According to Ephesians 4:11?
What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?

Every believer has received one or more gifts, and they have a function/s to perform. In 1 Corinthians 12:7, Paul emphasises the unity of the church, and states that these gifts are for the benefit of the whole church. In Ephesians 4:11, besides having been assigned specific gift/s, the Holy Spirit also gives them the ability to exercise these gifts. All these are also given for the profit of the church, and this results in the Body of Christ growing spiritually as each member uses their given gift/s.
Believer’s gifts are determined by God Himself and gifted according to His plan and purpose. No gift should be used for any other purpose than what God has planned. When believers fail to employ their spiritual gifts, besides being lazy, they show a complete lack of saving faith, and is an affront to our Heavenly Father.

Ephesians 4: 12 Spiritual gifts were giving for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry and for the edifying  of the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12: 7 spiritual gifts were given for the common good of the church body. Spiritual gifts are to be used to build up the kingdom of God.  Only those who are doing the will of God are gifted with spiritual gifts.  The body of Christ, the church, will recognize whether the gift is sincere, that is the reason we study to show ourselves approved.  The kingdom will not grow and God's glory will not shine if gifts are not used for His purpose.

Q1. (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7? According to Ephesians 4:11? What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?

According to I Corinthians, the purpose of these spiritual gifts is for the good of the church. It is to build up and encourage others in the church. It is for not only helping others in the church but reaching out to the people outside of the church. It is for helping the pastor and deacons have a lighter load so they can do their job better. Like volunteering to take some food to someone recovering from surgery or an accident or sending cards to people to encourage them. These are things that people who have the gifts of helps can do.

When people do not employ their gifts then the church or body is not built up and it becomes weak and ineffective. Only when we all work together can we get anything done.

Q8.1      What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7?      According to Ephesians 4:11?

Spiritual Gifts are to be used to bless the those that surround you, be it family , friends , work or play and your church body;  the common good  are the people GOD wants to reach through you.  Also the different ministries cited are for the training up of others to continue the Works of God through His people,  in order for us to be like minded and Christ-like and mature in our Faith.

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." (1 Corinthians 12:7, NIV)

"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of  Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (Ephesians 4:11-13, NIV)

*    What happens when people don’t employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?
God's  gifts are given to build up God's Kingdom of Believers ; Not using the God given gifts is a sort of rebellion and lack of maturity  and selfishness. The Blessings that could be passed through you are stopped and God's people are not strengthened and may actually be weakened without that talent the LORD has placed in you for such a time and place as you are in.

Q1. (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7?

Paul says that purpose of the gifts is "for the common good" (NIV, NRSV, ESV), "to profit withal" (KJV). The Corinthians seem to be using the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues for their own individual benefit, without regard to the needs of the assembled congregation, sometimes hurting the body. Gifts are given to build up the body and strengthen God's people. The "gift" is not to us personally. Rather, the gifts, that is, the gifted persons, are gifts to the body of Christ.

According to Ephesians 4:11?

The purposes build on one another:

Level 1. Equipping for ministry (verse 12a) "... to equip the saints for the work of ministry..." (ESV).

Level 2. Building up the Church (verse 12b)  "... for building up the body of Christ...." (ESV).

Level 3. Maturity and Unity -- Christ's Fullness (verse 13) " until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (ESV)

What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?

When people don't employ spiritual gifts for their indented purpose it will result in the church not being built up and we will have a weak church.

Q1 a. The purpose is for "good and profit" of the Church. (toward spiritual growth and maturity as well as for numerical growth in the Body of Christ...His Kingdom) 1 Cor 12:7

b. This list tells us that the gifts are given so that the Church may develop unity and oneness in the faith, and in the comprehension and full accurate knowledge of the Son of God, and that we arrive at maturity and completeness of personality.  Ephesians 4:11.

c. V 14 tells us that we stay as "children in the faith" tossed like ships to and fro, unsettled, uncertain, and become easy prey of unscrupulous men and women who invent errors to mislead. (The gift of discernment is given to recognize spirits which are not the Holy Spirit.)  Immaturity and worldliness and an emaciated body result as well as a powerless body of believers. It's also a discouraged church, as the gifts are meant to glorify the Lord and to demonstrate His power to heal, change, deliver, teach and train and build up and create intimacy and trust  within the church.

The purpose of spiritual gifts accd'g to 1 Cor. 12:7 is "for the common good", for the benefit of everybody versus for the person possessing the gift.   The purpose of spiritual gifts in Ephesians 4:11 (apostles, evangelists, pastors, teachers) is to equip God's people to serve and build up the body of Christ.   If spiritual gifts aren't used for their intended purpose, they end up being used for selfish purposes, to bring attention to the individual, or as a means to an end that is focused on self-gratification instead of the welfare of the body of Christ.

Q1. (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7? According to Ephesians 4:11? What happens when people don’t employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose?

According to 1 Corinthians 12:7, the spiritual gifts are given for the common good. According to Ephesians 4:11 it is God who gave some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. He gave them to the church for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry and to edify the body of Christ, so that all may come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

When people don’t employ spiritual gifts for their intended purposes then first of all they are not yielding themselves to the work of the Spirit through their lives and thus becoming a blessing to the body of Christ. This may result in the church not being built up and becoming weak. But then God does not depend on one individual who is standing against the purposes of God. He may raise up others to carry on His purposes. The Church is called the body of Christ. As His body, we have to serve as the hands and the feet and the eyes and whatever our gifting is for the glory of God, else we are the ones who are losing out - the blessing of being in His service.
