What was God seeking to accomplish through this affliction? Did it have the desired effect? They became sick because God was punishing and alerting Pharaoh that Sarah was Abraham's wife. The situation with Sarah was wrong and Pharaoh must release her back to her husband. Pharaoh got the message and he immediately confronted Abraham for not telling him the truth concerning Sarah and thus casted the couple out of Egypt. He learned his mistakes and returned Sarah to Abraham. He feared the Lord. Through the afflication God showed Aabraham and Pharaoh they had done wrong. He was still in control. The effect it had on Pharaoh was it made him seek to find out what brought this curse upon him, when he found out, he sat Abraham and Sarah free. Pharaoh was not mean and hateful with Abraham, he ask Abraham why he had done such a thing, accepted his answer, and sent him away with everything he had and more. Pharaoh feared the Lord God. God was seeking Abraham and Sarah's release, and to show everyone concerned that God was still in control. For Pharaoh, that God was real, for Abraham, that he should have trusted the Lord completely for all his needs. Yes, it had the desired affect that God wanted. Because Pharaoh kidnapped Sarah and took her in as his wife, therefore committing adultery. God interceded with the sickness What effect did this have? God wanted to get Sarah back to Abraham and I believe he wanted Abraham to see that he can trust God instead of acting with unbelief Did it have the desired effect? No and Yes... Pharaoh and his household were sick because Pharaoh had taken Sarah into his house as his concubine when in fact she was Abraham's wife. It is not clear from the text whether this was a punishment of Pharaoh for his adultery or whether the punishment related specifically to the fact that it was Sarah. What effect did this have? What is clear is that the effect that it had was that when Pharaoh found out that this was what was causing the sickness, he restored Sarah to Abraham and sent them out of Egypt back to where they had come from, but allowing them to maintain all of their possessions. What is interesting, is that by this point, the famine which they had fled in the first place seems to have gone. So notwithstanding the apparent adversity which Abraham and more particularly Sarah, seemed to have suffered in Egypt, they were protected from the effects of the famine whilst there, and in fact prospered whilst there. What was God seeking to accomplish through this affliction? Throughout this passage God is shown as protecting Abraham, Sarah and their family first from the ravages of the famine and then from the dangers of being a foreign alien in Egypt. When the time comes and the famine has gone and Abraham can return to the land which God has promised him, it is necessary for Sarah to be restored to Abraham and for Pharaoh to allow them both safe passage from Egypt. God uses the sickness as a way of ensuring that Pharaoh releases Abraham and Sarah unharmed so that they can go on to fulfill God's promise. Did it have the desired effect? Yes. The sickness inflicted on Pharaoh's house persuades him that he should restore Sarah to Abraham, and more that that, he is clearly keen to get rid of them and put them as far away from his house as possible. He does this by ensuring that they are sent away from Egypt as quickly as possible. There is an interesting parallel here with the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt many years later. When Pharaoh found out that Abraham had lied to him, he sent both of them out of Egypt to fend for themselves, God was seeking to get Sarah back to Abraham and to show Abraham that he was not alone. He was being protected by God all the time. they needed to get back to the Promised Land so as to fulfill His promise. Yes I bellieve it had the desired effect. Pharaoh wanted that what he should not have touched an the effect of his selfish acts where to be suffered by his entire family. So often the practice of the few effect many innocent people. The sickness caused Pharoah to question what he had done and to question Abraham as well. God was seeking to accomplish the safety of Abraham and Sarah in a strange land and also the sanctification of their marriage. And He did accomplish both. God works in mysterious ways, indeed. It made Pharaoh take a look at his life and say "what am I doing wrong to cause these problems" ? God wanted Pharaoh to give Sarai back to Abraham. What was God seeking to accomplish through this affliction? Did it have the desired effect? The one thing that is very clear is that Pharaoh's household was sick because of Sarai being in it. The effect was that Pharaoh sought the reasons why and it was revealed to him that the hardships were because Sarai was taken as part of his household and she was the wife of Abram. This made the Pharaoh (obviously) fearful as he returned Sarai along with possessions and money to Abram. Because of this fear and actions taken to resolve the situation, his household was healed. As for the question, "What was God seeking to accomplish?" I can speculate that He wanted to increase Abram's faith, bless Abram, and perhaps reveal to Pharaoh some practices that were not pleasing in His eyes. The effect was that Pharaoh released Sarai and Abram to leave, take their additional wealth and just go...with no recourse. What was God seeking to accomplish through this affliction? To keep Sarai and Abram alive during this great famine.....and together, for God had promised to make him the father of many nations. Did it have the desired effect? Yes, I think so.....maybe we today would say that Abram lied and made Sarai step into a situation that was bad...but until we have walked where he walks how do we really know what we would have done. Notice that God didn't speak to Abraham while he was in Egypt. God didn't speak to Abraham again until he had returned to the place that God had instructed him to go to in the first place. Understand that Abraham and Sarah were chosen by God to be instruments through which an entire race would come and eventually the Messiah. Sarah in the hands of Pharaoh would not accomplish God's purposes so God had to do something in order for Abraham and Sarah to get back together once again. I see in this something fantastic: despite our human weaknesses and our weak faith (which Abraham had at this point) God still brought about His will and promises for Abraham and Sarah!What a mighty God we serve! Although it was actually Abraham who had deceived Pharoah into believing that Sarah was his sister and not his wife, the Pharoah was still held partially responsible. It should be noted that God had never allowed Pharoah to consummate their union, which would have been adultery and a greater sin and more severe punishment. Once Pharaoh was aware of the deception he immediately returned Sarah to Abraham and commanded that they depart Egypt immediately. This made Pharaoh aware of his sin and punishment and cause him to repent and return Sarah to Abraham God was trying to ensure Pharaoh know what he has done wrong and for him to repent and make restitution by returning Sarah to Abraham and sending them away without any of them being punished. God made all his harem baren and only removed this when Abraham and family were set free. God's will is strong, we must seek it and then follow. That is why I'm taking this study right not; I'm praying that I do here God telling me to stick it out in my curent job and he will make it right. It is a good test for my weak hearted faith. This is why Pharaoh and his family got sick. Abraham gained wealth while his wife was in Pharaoh’s harem. God was seeking to get Abraham and his wife free this affection and it worked.
