Q5. (Hebrews 12:1-2) Who are the "great cloud of witnesses" mentioned in 12:1?

The faithful believers who have preceded us in death.

What analogy to the life of faith is offered in 12:1?

That of running a race.....a long grueling marathon!

In what way is Jesus the "author" or "pioneer" of our faith?

It was Jesus' Divine plan to die for our sins/salvation, therefore is the "Author", and as the pioneer, he prepared the Way for us by being the forerunner, the source of our faith, going before as the first fruits of the resurrection.(the amplified version says: Jesus, who is the Leader and and the Source of our faith, (giving the first incentive for our belief).

How did he live by faith?

Jesus, for the joy of obtaining the prize that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God. In other words, He lived and fulfilled His destiny, decided in eternity, by faith in the awaited outcome.

In what way is he the "finisher" or "perfecter" of our faith?

He is the Finisher, by bringing our faith to maturity and perfection..."at that day", spoken of in Phil. 1:6.

Q5. (Hebrews 12:1-2) Who are the "great cloud of witnesses" mentioned in 12:1?

These witnesses are the people many of who are mentioned in Chpt. 11 who had fiath and were willing to perservere in trials in order to spend eternity with God.

What analogy to the life of faith is offered in 12:1?

The life of faith is presented as a race we have to run as we endure the trials of this world and run off with faith in God's promise. We can endure because of our faith in God and His Word.

In what way is Jesus the "author" or "pioneer" of our faith?

Jesus focused on the finish as He underwent the trials and pains of

suffering and dying on the cross for our salvation.

How did he live by faith? In what way is he the "finisher" or "perfecter" of our faith?

Jesus suffered much hardship, pain and many trials in this world. However he was able to finish the race because he focused on the end of the race (and all the joy of being with God).

The "great cloud of witnesses" are the martyred saints and the dead men of God who lived before us.

The life of faith should be compared to a race ran by an athlete who's goal is to win the prize through endurance and victory.

Jesus is the author and pioneer of our faith because He is the example that we are to follow. He is the original man of faith because of His victory at the Cross.

Jesus lived by faith by not looking at His hardships and struggles but looking towards the goal to completion and accomplishment.

He perfected faith when He endured on the Cross until the end and then sat at the right hand of the throne of God due to his perfect faith in God.

What analogy to the life of faith is offered in 12:1?

In what way is he the "finisher" or "perfecter" of our faith? All the thousands of God's faithful people, now dead, who sufferedseverely as a result of their loyalty to the Lord, are the great cloud of witnesses mentioned in 12:1. They witness to us by their lives of faith and endurance and they set a high standard for us to try and copy. If they could maintain their brave perseverance with much lesser privileges, how much more should we, to whom the better things of Christianity have come. Jesus is the author, or pioneer, of our faith in the sense that He has provided us with the only perfect example of what the life of faith is like. He is also the finisher, or perfecter, of our faith. He not only began the race but finished it triumphantly. We can see His race went from heaven to Bethlehem, then on to Gethsemane and Calvary, and finally from the tomb and back to heaven. At no time did He falter or turn back. He kept His eyes fixed on the coming glory when all the redeemed would be gathered with Him eternally. This enabled Him to think nothing of shame and to endure suffering and death. Today He is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Throughout the race, we should look away from every other object and keep our eyes riveted on Jesus. A>B>Bruce comments:

They are the ones of faith mentioned in chapter 11. Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Arron,Rahab, Joseph, Jacob, Isaac, and so on. We have the same weights and snares that wait to embrace us, grab us, but since we have faith we are surrounded by this cloud of witnesses of faith that we may lay aside all our sins and run with endurance the race that is set before us. Jesus has done it all for us. He is our model to look to. He lived by faith knowing that the Father would not let Him perish or forget Him. He lived a pure and holy life style according to the Fathers will. He came to us in human form, reached out to us, lived as one of us, died on the cross for our sins not His for He had none, and when it was all done He was raised from the dead and now sits at the right side of the Father. He showed us what faith is, He came here for us, to save us, for He loves us. We were not getting it so He came to our level for a short time to show us, what love He has for us! Thank you Jesus!

THe "great cloud of witnesses" are the faithful believers of the Old Testament who maintained their faith in God through all types of test and trials looking forward to the promise of God. . .

In spite of how things may come about in our lives we should not give up trusting God - knowing that our faith in God and His Word will not fail us or allow us to fail. . .

Jesus was and is the "Originator" of our faith who though tempted in all point such as we are - did not yield to the temptation to sin - but trusted in the Father to the completion of the purpose of which He came into the earth. . .

Jesus is also the "Perfector" of our faith in that He endured the Cross - atoning humanity's sins - trusting the Father to raise Him from the dead. . .

All of the people mentioned in chapter 11 are the witnesses. These people are our example for moving forward in faith. No, they were not perfect. They had the same battles and struggles that we have. But-they also had the same armour that we have! They had the word of God! They had faith as a grain of mustard seed! They saw the prize waiting at the end of their journey, and they knew that Jesus would come and complete the path that leads to eternity! I got to go shout! Bye!

1) The "great cloud of witnesses" are the men of faith.

2) The analogy used to the life of faith in 12:1 is that of an athlete preparing to run a race. They take off anything that may be weighting them down. They run with patience and set their minds on the finished line.

3) Jesus is the "author" or "pioneer" of our faith because he was the orginator. He set the example.

4) Jesus lived by faith by looking beyond his current struggles. He was willing to die a shameful death because of the joy he knew he would be sitting on the right hand side of his Father.

4) Jesus is the "finisher" or "perfecter" of our faith because he endured to the end and successfully finished his assignment.

The witnesses are the people of faith,God's faithful, that has gone bgefore us. The analogy is that we can have the same faith as the saints of old. Jesus is the author because He is the supreme example of faithful endurance. Our endurance in the Christian life will depend on our keeping our eyes on Jesus, staying focused on him and his work on our behalf. He is the finisher because He has accomplished everything necessary for faith under the new covenant to be a reality.

The great clouds of witnesses are those who were before us (Old Testament) and had great faith, enduring through trying times. The analogy is “running a race around a race track”. Jesus is the author of our faith by the example of “faith” that He set for us to live by and the agony He suffered on the cross. He ran the race before us and finished as a victorious winner; He did not look at His circumstances. By faith, He kept His focus on His goal, which was the will of the Father. Jesus is the founder of our faith and through the faith He displayed and the successful completion of His work on the cross; He is also the perfector of our faith.

The cloud of witnesses that mentioned in 12:1 is those who have gone before us and have been martyred. Not only have those that are mentioned in the Bible but there are a lot of witnesses since then that are also parted of the cloud of witnesses.

The analogy of life of faith that is offered on 12:1 is one that running a race to overcome evil. We are to stay the course. Jesus is the “author” or “pioneer” of our faith because He is the one that we are trying to follow. He is the one that came to earth to show us the way to heaven.

Jesus knew what lied ahead and was willing to do whatever it took to get to that goal. When they put him on the cross He finished what He had come to earth to do. When he was raised into heaven that was the end and He finished it for all of us.

The great cloud of witnesses mentioned in Hebrews 12:1 would be all the past multitudes of judges, prophets and believers who look forward to the promises of the Lord, but never received them.

The analogy to the life of faith that is offered in 12:1 is to run the race in our life of faith, this is our destiny. Our struggles have been set before us and we must run the race in spite of them.

Jesus is the author of our faith because knowing what he had to endure for the joy that was set before him is now seated at the right hand of the father. Thus by his faith as an example we are to endure the obstacles set before us, for the joy of eternal life in Heaven with the Lord.

Jesus lived by faith because he knew if he endured all trails and temptations set before him, obeying the will of the father, his joy would remain ahead of him.

Jesus our perfecter and finisher of our faith, teaches us that if we endure the trails and temptations set before us as they with Christ our perfection of living a similar life, a great reward of eternal life awaits us.

The great cloud of witnesses are all those who have died in the old testament following the faith without seeing the promises fulfilled.  They are the examples we should follow for we walk the same path as they.  We too are to follow in the footsteps of faith, and stand on the promises that has been given.  To live with Jesus and to obtain eternal life is the goal set before us. He has shown us how to live and what is expect of us to obtain it.  Jesus is!  God is!  It has always been and will always be.

The great cloud of witnesses are the pioneers of the faith who gladly chose to forsake this world and follow the Lord and do whatever He asked no matter what others thought. Also they chose to do it because they knew they would be rewarded by the Lord for their faithfulness. The analogy to the life of faith offered is about running a race. The Lord is the pioneer of our faith through the fact He chose to die for our sins to accomplish our eternal redemption and ensure that anyone who would believe Him would be saved. He chose to do the Father's will. He is the author of it through the fact that He is the very Word that is spoken of in the Gospel of John.

Saints who have gone before, successfully living out their faith in spite of suffering.

A race set before a great crowd.

He had perfect faith, suffered perfectly, and successfully. He made salvation possible. His obedience and suffering makes it possible for us to live and suffer in a way that honors God. And to be received into heaven.
