estrong
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Letalism and asceicism are unable to restrain us from sin because they are constraints man has put upon himself. Nothing we do as men is perfect. Paul teaches us to follow after a loving god who is perfect in nature and dosen't ask sillyness of us. We are asked to obey and follow but God doesn't make demands of us he gives us our free will so when we do follow after God's heart it is a true willingness to respond to our father's will. PATCH
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Legalism and asceticism cannot restrain the sinful nature because they are works of the flesh, "good" acts perform outwardly. Those who are "successful" in these areas tend to feed the sinful nature because they become self-righteous, insular and condemning of those who appear to be weaker than them. Paul offered freedom in Christ Jesus in place of legalism. By having faith in Jesus and growing in obedience to Him, completes us. We are changed from the inside out to be a living testimony to Him. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? legalism and asceticism are unable to restrain the sinful nature because if it is legal we don't find it wrong and we eat, drink and do what we want because it seems to be okey, even though it can be harmful to us. paul offers the suggestion that we should not be subject to the ordinances as an alternative to legalism. WALT39
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Colossians 2:20-23 - 20Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 21"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? 22These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? It is based on human nature and human needs. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Turn toward Jesus. Paul told the Colossians in chapter 2, verses 6-7,

Delivered
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? Paul is teaching the Gentiles they do not have to become a Jew and follow the laws as God gave to His chosen people Israel, and think the law in itself can bring righteousness. Paul wrote, I treat my body hard and make it my slave Paul did not let himself be ruled by his impulses. Pauls points on asceticism, self mortification, are that it only produces an outward appearance of wisdom, false humility, the sinful nature disguised as humility. Man made rules; Gnosticism is what Paul was warning the Gentiles about (Col. 2:8) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Will not bring the fruits of the Spirit, by following Gods commandments whose foundation is love What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? We are not to follow man made rules on how to be righteous, rules not based on Gods commandments, but, to do as Jesus teaches, Hear oh Israel, love the Lord God with all your hearts. This is the number one command, and when we do that, love for one another will be a result of our obedience, as Paul said, make our bodies hard, a slave unto righteousness and not to manmade rules and teachings of legalism, man made rules. Christ came so the "law" would be on our hearts, and not the outward act of "legalism"
Jen
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Legalism ans asceticism deal with living in the flesh and doing it your self. It is self reliance and works as the way to God. WRONG!! The only way to God is Jesus who is the reality the hope of glory. He is the head and He gives us everything we need to walk complete in Him. He is the Head of the church and He is our salvation based on His completed work on the cross. He is reality! God Bless! Jen Numbers 6:24-26 There is a wonderful book called "Reality The Hope of Glory". I wish I could remember the author. It must be up in the loft. It's a wonderful read if you can find it. I shall have to find my copy. One of those books I don't part with.
Old Jerry
Legalism and asceticism is unable to restrain the sinful nature because it is not giving you a personal relationship with God. It makes it so we can judge each other and has nothing to do with the relationship with God. Paul
Vaiden Rochelle
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? I feel as Old Jerry does. We can't have a personal relationship with God like He wants us to have. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Co. 2? He offers living the way Jesus wants us to live. Paul wants us to realize that once we have Jesus living in us and that He has "wisdom and knowledge" (verse 2) that He wants us to have and use. He will also help us with our daily problems. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? They are unable to restrain the sinful nature because their focus is not on a personal relationship with Christ but rather works governed by human rules. Our faith is the alternative to legalism. He forgave us all our sins having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness ...He has taken it away nailing it to the Cross!!
janel
Q4 Legalism and asceticism are unable to restrain the sinful nature because the false teachers are clever to sugar coated their offers and temptation knew no bonds for they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. If they are not drawn closer to Christ in their daily life, their character and their actions then they are deceived with promises which cannot be delivered. What Paul is offering to the Colossians is that they must experience the very core and personal touch of Christ. They must live, eat and have their beings in Him that is Christ Jesus. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? There are no divine elements involved. Legalism and asceticism are merely human efforts to make oneself religious, holy, acceptable to God, etc. Our alternative to this is the freedom and grace we have in Jesus the Christ and the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit in our life. The bottom line is that we have freedom from rules and a new life in Jesus the Christ. Jesus is the way, truth, and life and not legalism and asceticism. linda bass
Legalism and asceticism are unable to restrain the sinful nature because they don't bring about spiritual transformation. Legalistic religion doesn't draw a person closer to Christ in their daily life. The alternative to legalism Paul offers in Colossians 2 is that we are complete in Christ. AngelOnLine
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? Because legalism and asceticism are of the flesh. It's like trying to make self look good to others. It should be all about God, not all about self. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Actions and works do not save us. Salvation comes only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
poetmom
Christ gets to the core of our being and truly transforms us while human rules remain on the surface of our behavior. I think sometimes "rules" can temporarily aid someone who is trying to focus on Christ or get back on track, such as staying away from bars, disconnecting the cable TV, fasting from shopping malls. But the key is to remember that these "rules" don't do the transforming--Christ does.
nurselaino
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? Col 2:20 If you have died with Christ to the basic principles of the world, why are you submitting to its decrees as though you still lived in the world? Col 2:21 "Don't handle this! Don't taste or touch that!" Col 2:22 All of these things will be destroyed through use because they are based on human commands and teachings. Col 2:23 These things have the appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion, humility, and harsh treatment of the body, but they have no value against self-indulgence. All the rules in legalism are man made not divine by nature. Man does not have the right to appoint how God is to be worshiped, the Lord Himself has told us what is to be done. Christ has appointed a few ordinances of religion - and they are enough. They are simple, easily observed, and all adapted to promote piety. He knew how ready men would be to rely on them rather than on the merits of the great Sacrifice, and hence he appointed no ordinance where that danger could exist. Self-imposed ordinances gratify the flesh (namely, self-righteousness), though seeming to mortify it. They indulge our corrupt nature, our self - will, pride, and desire of being distinguished from others. Paul reminds us that Christ is all we need. A complete and total relationship with Jesus will fill us completely. Nothing else is needed or should be desired.
leihaynes
Q4. (Colossians 2:20-23) Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? 1. Why are legalism and asceticism unable to restrain the sinful nature? It's pretty amazing that we can get caught up in legalism when we become self-righteous and prideful because of our intelligence. Our intelligence gets the best of us. There is no humility with a self-righteous and prideful spirit. Asceticism like legalism works the same way. When we take our gift of intelligence and use it to lift us up by making our own laws, and rules on top of rules, we have taken that gift for granted. Because our gift is just a gift, it is limited when we use it to try and benefit us. As we display legalism and asceticism we are displaying the sinful nature therefore it cannot be restrained. I believe that we do have a part in the restraining of our sinful nature and God has his part. Our part is to allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide and the Holy Spirit will lead and guide. Because God allows us to chose and make choices we are able to control many things in life. Doing our part is to control what we can and to be obedient to the Word of God. When the Holy Spirit convicts us of our wrong we are to adhere to the conviction and change what is wrong. To refuse shows our self-righteousness. 2. What alternative to legalism does Paul offer in Colossians 2? The alternative Paul gives is Christ. The personal relationship with him. Amen

They do not keep us from sin because they are man made and they do not come to us by God and the New Covenant which we have in Jesus Christ and was sealed at the cross by his blood.
