Q1. The Spirit Upon

Recommended Posts

Primary purpose was for them to perform a specific task ordained by God.  It was not permanent.

The Holy Spirit brought them closer to God.  It caused them to have a personal relationship with Him to accomplish said task.

Q1. (1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51:11) What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament? What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God?

1. The Spirit "comes upon" or "fills" only specific people for a special service.

  2. The Holy Spirit changes us and transforms us into a person who can act in power to what God has assigned for us to do. With the Holy Spirit we can know God personally and intimately.

What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament?

Gods primary purpose of placing his spirit in certain individuals is to equip them with all his ability and makes them to do things  to beyond their natural ability .Gods spirit empowers them with required knowledge, wisdom, intelligence, understanding, ability, talent and skill to fulfill the purpose and plan of god. When god put his spirit in certain individuals like saul , he transformed in to a new individual. His thinking changed and his mind is renewed. In case of samson,  spirit of god gave him supernatural strength to protect Israelite from philistines. In case of judges god gave him spirit of wisdom(Spirit of wisdom) to rule his people. God gave his spirit to moses,Gideon, david  to lead people(Leadership). God gave his spirit to all his prophets like Eliajah and elisha to tell the people about will of god. Spirit of god  loaded them with a supernatural ability as a result a shepphard became a king . David is able to kill Goliath who is  more stronger, more powerful and more skilled than David. It means spirit of god empowers us to reach a place where we can not achieve with our ability

What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God?

The spirit of god kept a burden in the hearts of individuals which made them focus on will of god. It helped them to know the plans of god. Spirit of god guided them. In total it helped them to live a holy life. Spirit of god

The primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the ., O.T  is God is  very specific about His assignments.  He is Spirit and He knows and has  a relationship with the spirit man. Bezalel, Moses, Gideon, Samson, David had a relationship with God in spirit. The effect the Spirit have upon their relationship is  they believed and trusted God.

The work : The work of the Holy Spirit’s in the Old Testament is basically the granting of certain ability to perform specific tasks. Much like the way the spiritual gifts operate in the New Testament, the Spirit would gift certain individuals for services.

Effects : I believe that it’s a calling for a present realization of the promise of a covenant - “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you and I will remove the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes” (Ezek 36:26~28)

1 Samuel 16:13

God chooses men and women to be His representative on earth. Most of whom seem reluctant at first. Man has been, and always will be flawed. God uses the voices of these selected Old Testament individuals to deliver Gods messages/guidance for living in harmony within His kingdom. The indwelling Spirit gave these individuals authority. Authority was needed to lead the people and steer them back to God.

Psalms 51:11

The Spirits effect on these individuals was to draw them closer to God. Clearly David felt differently with the Spirits presence and begged to keep it.  Davids relationship with God was intimate. It can be felt throughout the Psalms. Something interesting to me is that God only gives these individuals enough of the Spirit to proclaim Gods messages and speak with Gods authority. They did not become godhead's. There is still much of their human frailty on display in their lives as they argue with God and commit sins against God.

In these two passages of scripture we see how the indwelling Spirit of God transforms us from a being of this world to one who has been given a conscience of spiritual elements and to developing sensitivity to the kind of characteristics that define us as no longer conforming to this world.

What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament?

To shed Light .    It is the Wisdom, knowledge and Understanding from above that is poured out when needed.  In dark times especially GOD will receive the Praise and Glory as HE indwells in some and upon others to bring 'Light' , HIS Light , to His people and to the world when man veers off course or needs rescuing.

People in days of the Old Covenant forgot what their Grandparents ( Adam to Noah) knew about GOD.  So HE starts over with  Father Abraham , and every generation thereafter the Holy Spirit would reveal more and more about their God to them , through words and miracles as needed.

In every generation God has blessed individuals with the Holy Spirit for leadership , for correction of His people, be they the Jews of old or the Gentiles of today.

He also blesses us with 'hope'  as HE speaks through those HE chooses .  The greatest hope being a Redeemer in the person of Christ  and the eternal salvation that follows those that seek HIM with all their heart.

What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God?

God's will is to have a personal relationship with each of us.  Through His Holy Spirit we get to know about God and to feel His presence when we truly seek Him  ( not for what HE can give us but just for who HE is ..... our ABBA. )    Then we will gladly do His bidding, whatever HE will ask of us, amen.

Q1. (1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51:11) What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selectedindividuals in the Old Testament? What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God?

The primary purpose of God forgiving selected individuals his spirit in the Old Testament is to enable them   to do something special for the Lord God.

The coming of the Holy Spirit upon the individuals appears to enhance their relationship with God, to make them more aware of God's presence and to enable them to do the work that God has asked them to do.

The Spirit of God is powerful .alive and ever active .In the Old Testament the Spirit of God was not universal. There was sporadic settlement of this Holy Spirt or Rauah in particular person living at a time for a particular Goal of God or Yahweh ,The primary purpose was a service that God chose for the person,The selected individual was to obey and act  in power when the Spirt indwell in him,.There are narrations of many persons in OT who had this experience .

The effect was a CHANGE  in the way the person received  as the person understood the  specific comand and task  he was ordained or expaected to do ,This change was a Power and Conviction to ACT or REST ,giving utmost importance to teh commander ,Yahweh. The relationship was very personal .We see that many of those with Spirit prophesed and stood strong in front of enemies ,Won battles ,Lead people closer to God and Righteousness ,,The effect is a New Heart in Obedience ,

1. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
Q1. (1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51:11) What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament?

For serving God and also for Fellowship with Him.

1. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
Q1. (1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51:11) What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament?

The Spirit Comes Upon Individuals
ANS: Q 1. It's important to observe that in the Old Testament that the Spirit isn't universal. He doesn't indwell everyone. Rather the Spirit "comes upon" or "fills" only specific people for a special service. For example:

Bezalel is "filled" with the Spirit of God to develop and execute artistic design for the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:2; 35:31).
The 70 Elders receive some of the Spirit of God[3] that is on Moses (Numbers 11:17, 25).
Gideon is able to deliver Israel because "the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon" (Judges 6:34), as well as upon other judges (Judges 3:10; 11:29).
Sampson performs feats of strength when the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him (Judges 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14).
Prophets prophesy when the Spirit of God comes upon them (2 Chronicles 15:1; 20:14; 24:20; Joel 2:28-29; Luke 2:25).

What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God?

Example: For David; The personal relationship David has with God is because the Spirit of God has come upon him and the presence of the Spirit with David. Others know of God, and know him at some level, but David knows him personally and intimately through the Spirit. When David repents from his sin concerning Bathsheba and Uriah (2 Samuel 12:13), he pleads with God against whom he has sinned: "Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me." (Psalm 51:11)

For David, the Holy Spirit brings God's precious presence. Without the Holy Spirit, David would be bereft of the wonderful relationship he has with God.

The Spirit upon Saul (1 Samuel 10)
The Holy Spirit changes Saul and transforms him into a person who can act in power to deliver Israel (1 Samuel 11:6).

The Spirit on David (1 Samuel 16)
I have chosen one of his sons to be king" (1 Samuel 16:1). Finally, David is called in from watching the sheep. When he arrives, the Lord speaks to Samuel: So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power... All of David's life thereafter is infused with the Spirit. The psalms written by David are not only prophetic (Acts 1:16; 4:25; Matthew 12:36; 22:43), but also a record of David's love for and personal relationship with the Lord.

(For Serving God and also for Fellowship).

Before Jesus, the Holy Spirit was conferred by a sovereign act of God upon individuals who would need His help to carry out God's plans for them. The first thing we notice is that all are changed. Samson was changed from an ordinary man into a superwarrior who could kill  a hundred Philistines armed only with the jawbone of an ***. Gideon was changed from a timid youth into a hero, whilst Saul was able to prophesy.  David was a special case, as it was said (1 Samuel 16 v 13) that from the moment of his anointing He came upon him in power from that day forward, It seems that the Spirit indwelt David in the same way as He does us.

The Spirit brings a greater feeling of the presence of God. He comforts and guides us, He tells us things we couldn't know and infuses our worship with joy.  Now the Spirit of God enters us and remains at the moment of our second birth, but there remains an experience of His greater presence, at times when He is sought. This is known as the Baptism in the Holt Spirit and is to be eagerly requested.

We are familiar with the great feats our examples did , but they left us a mighty lesson. The Holy Spirit, though full of power will not be your master. He operates by gently suggesting things to you, and it is easy, if you choose to ignore Him and do it your way, and there came a time for each of them when this was what they did.

Samson turned to drink, gambling and women. He ended up blind and working like a donkey.(He learned his lesson and the Spirit returned to help him achieve a glorious death, but what much greater things he could have achieved if he had not fallen).

Gideon, after the victory over the Midianites, instead of giving God the glory made a memorial with the gold which his soldiers gave him as tribute, a golden ephod which the bible says 'became a snare to Israel " .After his death his seventy sons were murdered, all but two, and one of them was the murderer.

Saul's disobedience after the victory over the Amalekites resulted in the Holy Spirit leaving him to be replaced by an evil spirit, and ultimately his death and loss of the crown.

David, a man after God's own heart, when Bath Sheba flaunted her naked body before his window became an adulterer, and then became the murderer king. His penalty was not only the death of the child, which is an agonising experience from which you never fully recover, but the curse that "the sword shall never leave your house....I will raise up evil against you out of your own family "  2 Samuel 12 10 and eleven.

The result was rape,  murder, rebellion and death.

Now, the Holy Spirit will not leave you if you ignore Him ( Given the Lord's promise , "I will never leave you nor forsake you," I doubt that this is even possible,  but He will cease to guide and advise you. You will make your own decisions some of which will bring you great grief. I, for example, if I had listened to Him, would have been spared bankruptcy.

Let us all then listen keenly for the Spirit's voice and hasten to follow His directions.

God imputes dear Holy Spirit into individuals. They had no initiation in this experience. They just became vessels. Thank God they were ready and willing to implement what He dwelled in them to do. Yes I agree the Holy Spirit isn't universal. It indicates how God chooses. He is not interested in those who feel qualified. He uses the weak and empowers them to do the impossible.

I don't see the Holy Spirit as an object of man. Well what we have in Africa seldom shows as if we can induce the Holy Spirit. The role of God is submerged and the role of the individual is promoted.

Is it possible to lure the Holy Spirit into my life? Or what best must I do to be in filled by the Holy Spirit?

Q1 Primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon the selected individuals was to enable them to accomplish certain tasks he had in mind such as Saul to lead the nation of Israel, Gideon to deliver Israel.

The effect the Holy Spirit had on the specific individuals' relationship with God was to strengthen and bring them closer to God as they were obedient.

a) The primary purpose of God putting His Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament was for empowerment for His divine assignment (God's work upon their lives) and to know Him intimately. This bring His precious presence, transformation and boldness to minister accordingly.

b) Effect: His Spirit is the key to their relationship with God. This enable them to lead God's people and also make their gifting unique from ordinary people.

The people of the old testament who walked with God and obeyed his word, where selected to receive the Holy spirit to make God's presence known to them and so that God could use them for a specific purpose.  God sees the heart of man and each person, before they are visited with the Holy Spirit has already demonstrated their faithfulness to God, therefore the Holy Spirit abides in them so that they can feel God's presence and aids them in doing the father's will for them to accomplish his purpose.  The effect the Holy Spirit has on each one is the ability to commune directly with God and to understand His purpose and His plans for them.  They each had specific duties to perform to help the people of God. God communicated with his people through them.

1a. The primary purpose is to anoint the selected individual for the service God has chosen for them to fulfill, and to empower and embolden them for their service. It seems that He often called and anointed them in front of witnesses to give them credibility in their "neighborhood" or circle of influence. (Jesus said "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house. Mt 13:57)

1b. It "seals" their relationship as personal, powerful, and "peculiar" (in a positive sense).  In David's case He beseeched God to not take His Spirit away from him. It validated them as God's "own and chosen" for His special and specific purposes. It gave them "acceptance and favor" with God. It also made clear to each one their main purpose for having been born/created for that specific time and place.
