I love the comments about bearing fruit and increasing. I hadn't seen that from this perspective before. But it makes a lot of sense. Sure, we're not a little underground group. This movement was big before it got here, and it's getting bigger every day. Don't lose sight of the plan. Don't lose hope. Know you are connected around the world by the very God who created it. I can see how forgetting that causes the Church today to get distracted. A loss of hope, a loss of faith, results in a loss of direction.

My take on this passage is tied to the statement, "the word of truth." I think this is what the church today struggles with more than anything else. How many times in a day do we hear of someone, representing the Church, make a comment about the Word of God being, "subject to interpretation," then expounding on their interpretation, many times leading to a conclusion which most of us would disagree with; a position, in fact, which more closely resembles the world. A position which does not at all reflect the life of holiness to which we've been called.

Q1. (Colossians 1:5-6) Paul glorifies the gospel, the good news. What words does he use to describe the action of the gospel in verses 5 and 6? Given the temptation the recipients have to adopt another religious philosophy, why do you think he reminds them of the world scope of the gospel

The gospel brings growing fruit--faith, love & hope.

He reminds them that the gospel is alive and those who hear are growing--are fruit producersl

Sometimes, when things are dull and just the same every day, we can assume that is the same thing that is going on in the world. But to hear of the gospel's fruit in different parts of the earth, encourages us.

The church will lose credibilit of it's witness if the gospel becomes an embarrassment or is unimpressive. It will also lose members. And,worse than that, it can go off believing lies and setting up a false church, with false beliefs.

Paul discribes the gospel as the Word of Truth that can be trusted, as growing and bearing much fruit. . .

So that they would accept the Gospel as the Good News about Jesus and understand its power to transform lives all over the world. . .

When a church becomes embarassed or unimpressed with the Gospel its influence deminishes or dies - it no longer has the ability to proclaim the only message that had the power to transform lives and bring people into a right relationship with God. . .

Paul says that the gospel is the word of truth, and what we may safely venture our immortal souls upon: it proceeds from the God of truth and the Spirit of truth, and is a faithful saying. He calls it the grace of God in truth, Col 1:6.

. It is a great mercy to hear this word of truth; for the great thing we learn from it is the happiness of heaven

All who hear the word of the gospel ought to bring forth the fruit of the gospel, that is, be obedient to it, and have their principles and lives formed according to it.

Wherever the gospel comes, it will bring forth fruit to the honour and glory of God: It bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you. We mistake, if we think to monopolize the comforts and benefits of the gospel to ourselves. Does the gospel bring forth fruit in us? So it does in others.

The "action" of the gospel in vs. 5 and 6 are described as: " Faith and love that spring from hope." "Bearing fruit and growing."

Paul reminds of the scope of the Gospel's influence to encourage believers in spiritual growth and perseverance. He encouraged that the Gospel of Christ was growing all over the world and was bearing fruit. He reminded the believers that this is the same Gospel they themselves understood of God's grace and all it's truth. This is his encouragement to them to stay in these truths and not allow the philosophies of false religions to taint their pure growth in the true knowledge of God and redemption and power through Jesus Christ.

When our churches today become embarrassed or unimpressed by the Gospel, they wither and die in truth. The whole purpose of the church is to preach the good news, the Gospel of Jesus. If that becomes secondary or even replaced with false, vain doctrines, then they become disconnected with the head and the vine of life and wither and die. They may "look" like functioning churches, maybe even prosperous churches, but to those who know Jesus, it is apparent another "gospel" is being preached and truth is lost. We see a lot of "worldly" knowledge and practices meshed into what they claim to be "God's" work but if examined, is not the pure Gospel of Christ.

The action of the Gospel is to grow and bear fruit; both in the world and in Christ-followers. It bears fruit in the world by bringing more to the Truth that the Gospel proclaims; it bears fruit in us by leading us to confront, and repent from our sin; and also encourages us to know that God loves us and wishes us to be saved.

By reminding the Church at Colossae of the global scope of the Gospel, Paul tells them that God is the only God; all others are false and their teachings do not bring salvation. In modern times, many churches have fallen away from the true message of the Gospel and are preaching a false theology. Chruches also begin to reject the teachings of the Gospel and do not seek to serve or to save the lost; instead they often 'close ranks' among themselves. In worse cases, they reject the teachings altogether and allow themselves to be led by the ungodly who reject some bibical teachings as being sin; when they are indeed sin. Thus, they begin to lead their own flocks astray and into condemntion.

>Faith and love springs from hope. You have heard, gospel have come, bearing fruit all over the world.

>Don't be led astray by the truth you have been taught. It is growing all over the world bearing good fruit. (Matthew 7:15-20; a good tree bears good fruit). He wants the body to not lose the freedom that God's grace provides.

>The message becomes diluted...only part truth...distorted truth. The Church ceases being a true reflection of Christ, instead becoming a reflection of the world.

Bearing fruit and growing

Given the temptation the recipients have to adopt another religious philosophy, why do you think he reminds them of the world scope of the gospel's influence?

Perhaps to try and show them how powerful and far reaching the influence of the gospel was.

What happens in our day when a church becomes embarrassed or unimpressed with the gospel message? How does this affect the church?

The church can become ineffective in communicating the truth of the real gospel. It will often approach it

I believe that Paul wants them to know they are not alone, that the gospel must be taught, Churches today can forget what their true purpose is, and if they allow the teachings of the Lord to be forgotten what happens to the teachings. Being a christian is a great thing, I have seen churchs that act like they have forgotten that, they show up only on Sundays for an hour and then they all run away from each other, Church should be about fellowship, support, and LOVE for each other.

In my info post, I forgot to tell everyone that I was raised Southern Baptist but converted to Catholicism in 1999.

Questions:

1a. The words I find particularly inspirational are HOPE, WORD OF TRUTH, AND BEARING FRUIT AND GROWING.

1b. I believe Paul knew how tempting it is and will continue to be for us to want instant gratification. He knew that false teachings will always be a problem, because it will entice people to follow because they can see immediate results vs remaining faithful, patient and focused. I read a quote once that said, "If faith were easy, then there would be no mountains." Paul knew that faith wouldn't be easy for us.

1c. Churches becoming unimpressed with age old teachings is a big problem. They want to pick and choose parts of the Bible to fit their own agendas which falls right into the answer on 1b. Paul knew this would happen. Some churches want to take Scriptures out of context instead of telling the whole story.
