Q2. Abraham's Rescue Mission

Recommended Posts

Abraham is man who values family. So must we, though not in an extreme manner that we pamper instead of love. When one is in trouble...all past transgression and arguments are forgotten and he sets out to rescue Lot, at therisk of his own life. Though trained men he had, they are going against 4 kings! Though he din do open battle..he must have been preparing for the worst while in hot pursuit. Such courage can only come from having faith in them LORD. Abraham is a dependable man n by now has grown much in faith. He is obviously a very good neighbour, for his neighbors help him in this almost suicidal mission. We must emulate Abraham in all these respects.

Lesson3 Q2:

(a) Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian Kings tell us about his character is Abraham may not be so much of a cad as people might think. This shows Abraham as being a very forgiving man. A man that do not hold grudges. A peaceful man who do not want any strife between Lot and himself; a man with faith in God, believing God to bring about His promises. He let Lot chose the land, and he trusts God to provide for him.

(B) Abraham had the abilities to rescue his nephew Lot. Abraham sets the strategy: (1) a night attack and (2) a divided force, this scares the soldiers into fleeing for their lives. He has God on his side.

© Abraham deals with his neighbors in a positive way. He gains them as valuable allies. At Hebron he builds an altar to the Lord. Abraham shows his faith in God. I believe this helps him to make a covenant or treaty with his neighbors.

(d) For us to emulate here is always try to make peace. Do not let strife come in our relationships. Be peaceful, and forgiving people. If we have too, sow our situations and believe God to replace them double-fold. Amen!

Someone responded that perhaps God directed Abraham to 'go after' Lot. Maybe it was his own idea, I sure believe that he talked to God about it all. Regardless, he certainly had to have a lot of courage to take on 4 armies. Additionally, he weighted his obligation to Lot over and above his own well-being and the well-being of the 314 and the family dependent upon him. In today's world, do we know anybody who would choose the course of action that Abraham took? I agree with the person who suggested that God must have told Abraham to go. (Typing makes me think more.) conclusion: Abraham trusted God and had a whole lot of courage.

Q2. (14:13-16) What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character? About his abilities? About the way he deals with neighbors? What is here for us to emulate?

Abraham always sought God's will in everything and knew that if God be for him would could be against him so he knew that he would win before the battle started. His character and blessing from God was noticed by his neighbors and they wanted to be a blessing which is one of God's promises to Abraham. Abraham had the mind of God and treated his neighbors with the compassion and fairness of God but without any compromise or letting down of his standards and faith.

We can be assured if God calls us to do anything he will equip us with the tools, faith and strength to do it if we step out in faith.

Here we have been thinking for the past week that Abraham is cowardly to the point of dishonesty. Now, look at this: a brand-new Abraham--one who shows loyalty to family and friends. He willingly helps the king of Sodom--someone for whom he obviously has no moral respect, but sees as a neighbor. The military strategist that we see here is brand-new as well. It comes as a surprise for us to see someone we thought of a a simple nomadic herdsman with such a trained army. What is here for us to emulate? Helping the downtrodden. Abraham helped his neighbor. Jesus taught us through the story of the Samaritan, that everyone is our neighbor.

Abraham would be a man who values his family after the Hebrew tradition of protecting their lineage. He would also be a skilled warrior and commander, traits necessary to carry out a successful attack such as was done to rescue Lot. To recruit the assitance of his neighbors he would have had to bread much good will toward them. All of these are qualities that a real man should emulate.

Q2. (14:13-16) What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character? About his abilities? About the way he deals with neighbors? What is here for us to emulate?

Abraham's objective is not to destroy the Mesopotamian army, however, but to rescue Lot. Indeed, Lot and all the captives, plus all the property seized by the Mesopotamians during their Palestinian campaign, are recovered. This shows that Abraham is not greedy and does not desire to destroy the Mesopotamian army but rather to rescue Lot. He is very organized and has ability to plan what needs to be done. I feel Abraham knows any special abilities he has comes from God.

Abraham acted to help when needed and this is something we need to remember.

This shows us a man that was willing to help for other's sake and not to better himself. He was prepared with fighting men to take with him and leave others to protect his house. He was a honorable man because his neighbors were willing to go with him to fight when he asks them. These are all qualities we want to possess and would bring glory to God. Helpfull, selfless, prepared, and honorable.

Q2. (14:13-16) What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character? About his abilities? About the way he deals with neighbors? What is here for us to emulate?

This expedition tells me that Abraham is honorable and brave. He takes seriously his convenant obligation to watch over, care for, protect, and come to the aide of his dead brother's son Lot.

Apparently Lot had great tactical warfare skills and could connect well with his neigbors as evidenced by gaining them as his allies in going to rescue his nephew.

Be bold, trust in God and then let God be our God. Abraham was a man of action, we should be the same.

Abraham was showing that he trusted God to bring Lot out. Lot was his family, Abraham was going to set him free, it did not matter what he faced. Abraham had the ability because he trusted God completely. Abraham showed respect for his neighbors. We are to reach our with a helpinghand for our neighbors whoever they may be. Show them the respect and love we would want. Show them the love of Christ.

Q2. (14:13-16) What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character? About his abilities? About the way he deals with neighbors? What is here for us to emulate?

Abraham had courage that came from God, facing a powerful foe he attacked.

He was prepared, he had taken time to train his men for a potential conflict.

We never know when we will be called up[on to complete difficult tasks. Like Abraham, we should prepare for those times and take courage from God when they come.

We should be willing to act immediately when others need our help, and we sometimes we must get involved in a messy or painful situation in order to help others.

Q2. (14:13-16) What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character? About his abilities? About the way he deals with neighbors? What is here for us to emulate?

Abraham wasn't afraid to defend his loved ones, and those whom God had placed in his care. He exhibited strong character and a determination to do his utmost with the gifts God had given him. Abraham was a man who made it a point to make friends and to seek their assistance for matters of great importance. I think we all need to remember that families are important, and that we should do our very best to help our loved ones as much as we are able. It's not always easy, but as long as we seek God's perfect will in these matters, He will lead and direct our steps.

Abraham was loyal, loving and a man of steely determination. He was well liked and held an important position which was carried over to his family, etc because his faith in God was an example for them to follow

What it shows about his character is that he is loyal to his family (Lot), determined and brave. What I think it also shows is that unlike in Egypt and again later in Gerar, this time, Abraham put his faith in God and was rewarded with God's protection and victory. What is shows about his abilities is that through God's blessing, he was able to raise a force of 318 trained armed men and with God's guidance he was able to command them to a great victory. At no time previously is there any hint through Abraham's life of him having any military prowess or even experience, and yet guided by God, he attacks in the right place, at the right time, dividing his men to attack from several directions so that he is able to achieve a remarkable victory.

In dealings with his neighbours it shows Abraham to be strong and principled, but fair, and on this occasion, completely honest. Abraham clearly comes out of this story very well. There is no ambiguity about his character here and we can emulate all of the characteristics which Abraham displays here. We should stand by our Christian principles even in the face of seeming overwhelming adversity, in the sure knowledge that God will guide and protect us as He did Abraham. We should also learn to recognize good (King Melchizedek) and wicked (the King of Sodom) and distinguish between them in our dealings

Q2. (14:13-16) What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character? About his abilities? About the way he deals with neighbors? What is here for us to emulate?

About his character is that he is very loyal. He was not duty bound to rescue Lot because of the size of the armies he would be facing. His concern was about Lot and his family and possessions. He knew he had to face four Mesopotamian kings and their large armies. He was outnumbered, although his 318 slaves or servants were trained men whose funtion was to provide military assisitance, but he also knew that God was with him.

He was able to divise a night attack and to divide his men to cause confusion among the large armies he was facing. He was also able to convince Mamre, Eshcol, and Aner to help.

His neighbors(Mamre, Schcol, Aner) were his allies(friends) but even more than that they were covenant friends (agreement between nations or individuals)

We can emulate his trust in God and believe that whatever we face God is there with us.

Abraham proved his worth as a God man and a family man, He demonstarted his love by actions, just as our God did for us. Abraham devotion to family and his ability to show mercy is a lesson for us all.

Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot tells us that Abraham values blood ties, is powerful with resource, has great networking abilities, and is confident that he is walking with the Lord. We also learn that he is not afraid of greater might and that he is a skilled military strategist.

I would emulate Abraham's trust in the Lord and regard for his kinsman.

It showed Abraham was going to honor his commitment to care and provide for his nephew. Abraham was a wealthy and wise man, He had the means and the trained personal to do what ever was called for to rescue Lot. Not to mention God is on his side. He was on good terms with his neighbors, they helped each other out. Stand by what you say,or profess, be faithful to your commitments. Always call out to the Lord for help, be obedient and try to do what is right.

Q2. (14:13-16)

What does Abraham's military expedition to rescue Lot from the Mesopotamian kings tell us about his character?

About his abilities?

About the way he deals with neighbours?

What is here for us to emulate?

It shows us he is a man of integrity and loyalty to his family. He is also a man of peace who is able to get his neighbouring leaders to support him in rescuing Lot. He shows leadership qualities in organising the rescue mission, and a brave man going into battle himself. Mostly I feel he trusted God completely knowing that God promised him the land of Canaan and also that he would have numerous offspring

He wanted to defend his nephew, defend the family, had faith to do God;s will

We are reminded here that our integrity does not lie entirely on shielding ourselves from evil influence, but also in taking action. It appears it was Abraham's committment to family that led him to plan strategy for Lot's rescue. He did what he needed to do without comprimise.
