Q3. The Phenomenon of Drift

Recommended Posts

There is no immunity to drifting away from the Gospel for us or anyone who does not do what it take to retain what they have learned and gain more. It is evident by the Word of God that we must not only be hearers of the Word - we must be doers of the Word. It is when we come into a living agreement with the Word of God that we have an anchor to hold us, to steady us in our walk with Christ. It is when we live in agreement with the Word of God that have have stability.

It is only by applying the Word of God in our lives and living in agreement with it that we have any possibility of successfully resisting the tendency to drift.

Jesus indicated that we must be firmly planted or rooted in the Word of God to aviod drifting. There has to be more than just hearing the Word to remain stable - more than a simple reaction to hearing the Word. According to Jesus we must also be willing and able to be more focused on the Word of God than the things the world has o offer if we are going to remain in a growing relationship with Him.

Q3. (Hebrews 2:1) In what ways are we not immune to drifting away from the gospel? According to the author, how can we successfully resist the tendency to drift? How did Jesus describe this phenomenon of "drift" in the Parable of the Sower?

By focusing on the cares of the world, listening to vain philosophies (untruths), worrying, and not staying rooted and grounded in the word one can easily drift. "Pay more careful attention" to God's word and not ignoring salvation is how one can prevent drifting accoding to the writer of Hebrews. Jesus says in the parable of the sower that those with a noble and good heart, hear the word, retain it and by perservering produce a crop all the others had various reasons why they drifted.

The bible says "Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God." We should be reading and meditating upon God's word and not allow the influences of the world to rule our lives. We can drift away if we do not heed the word of God. Our hearts and minds must be prepared to receive the word of God.We should be attentive, mindful and perceptive to what God want's to teach us through His word. If our hearts are hardened the seed (word of God) will not penetrate and there will be no fruit.

Answer: Drifting Away,or Slip away is something that most of us(if not all),must have experienced at a certain point of time in our life.Just like the parable of the Sower, and the condition of the Ground,as represented by our heart..We are in stages in our walk with God

If we don't pay attention to the gospel, we will drift away.

Giving heed to what we have heard-study, meditate, ponder.

Because the word that was sown couldn't take root-in other words, there was no studying, meditating, or pondering-there was drifting.

We must take notice of the gospel and be rooted in the Word of God. It is easy to drift away if we are not firmly planted. We must make sure our foundations are on firm and not rocky soil where nothing can root nor on such shallow ground that it is easy for the word to be lost--Or 'eaten up by the birds'. If we are secure in Him and in His Word then we are not easy pickings for the enemy. The enemy can try to push us into 'drift' but if our roots go down deep then all the attempts to push us into drift will fail.

1."We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away."

2.Take the word and apply it in our personal life.

3 They are like the seed in Jesus' Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23) that was sown on the hard ground of the path, the shallow ground of rocky soil, or the thorny soil where it was choked out. Just hearing the word, without being doers of it (James 1:22) is a dangerous, deceptive position to be in.

We are not immune in drifting away from the gospel if we do not put what we have heard into action. We must not just hear but respond in obedience.

We can resist the tendency to drift by listening carefully to what we have heard. Being attentive.

The Parable of the Sower tells us the concern one may have in being obedient to God's word. Not just hearing the word without being doers. The word must be sown deep for the root to catch.

Humanity has, since being cast out of the garden, been sucessful at meeting their own desires without thought to what God requires. If we stay in the Word and in an attitude of prayer, we have a better chance of staying in HIs will: not drifting away. The thing about drifting is that it is a slow, often unnoticible process. THerefore, the damage is done before we even realize that we are in danger.

As far as drifting in the Parable of the Sower, I don't see it except in one place; the shallow soil. I believe that the soils are more personalities and the circumstances surrounding them.

We are not immune to drifting from the gospel. When we read, hear, and not do what the word says, not paying attention to what’s being said, we make ourselves immune. We have to be attentive to what we read and hear from the true word of God. We must read and apply the word in our lives daily. We are in different stages and take and use information differently. Drifting can be because some hear the word but are hardened or shallow so the word doesn’t penetrate; some hear it apply it for a little while but remain in a worldly mindset, while others hear it, and apply it promoting spiritual growth (a good crop bearing good fruit) in their lives.

Q3. (Hebrews 2:1) In what ways are we not immune to drifting away from the gospel? According to the author, how can we successfully resist the tendency to drift? How did Jesus describe this phenomenon of "drift" in the Parable of the Sower?

It is the great concern of every one under the gospel to give the most earnest heed to all gospel discoveries and directions, to prize them highly in his judgment as matters of the greatest importance, to hearken to them diligently in all the opportunities he has for that purpose, to read them frequently, to meditate on them closely, and to mix faith with them. We must embrace them in our hearts and affections, retain them in our memories, and finally regulate our words and actions according to them.

We shall sustain if we do not take this earnest heed to the things which we have heard: We shall let them slip. They will leak, and run out of our heads, lips, and lives, and we shall be great losers by our neglect. Learn, (1.) When we have received gospel truths into our minds, we are in danger of letting them slip. Our minds and memories are like a leaky vessel, they do not without much care retain what is poured into them; this proceeds from the corruption of our natures, the enmity and subtlety of Satan (he steals away the word), from the entanglements and snares of the world, the thorns that choke the good seed. (2.) Those meet with an inconceivable loss who let gospel truths, which they had received, slip out of their minds; they have lost a treasure far better than thousands of gold and silver; the seed is lost, their time and pains in hearing lost, and their hopes of a good harvest lost; all is lost, if the gospel be lost. (3.) This consideration should be a strong motive both to our attention to the gospel and our retention of it; and indeed, if we do not well attend, we shall not long retain the word of God; inattentive hearers will soon be forgetful hearers.

This world has so much to offer us that if we don’t stay connected to God then we will drift away from the gospel. The author is telling us that in order to successfully resist the tendency to drift is to do the things that the gospel tells us to do. Jesus described this phenomenon of “drift” in the Parable of the Sower by telling us that if we don’t stay connected to Jesus we will not be about to resist what this world has to offer.

Q3. (Hebrews 2:1) In what ways are we not immune to drifting away from the gospel? According to the author, how can we successfully resist the tendency to drift? How did Jesus describe this phenomenon of "drift" in the Parable of the Sower?

hearing the gospel and adhering to it's proclamation, we can be pulled away from it by the cares of the world, we have heard the good news and instantly received it with joy. `Because of our worldly cares we allow the word to be trampled under foot and soon forget the joy. if we do not keep ourselves in the word everyday, to meditate on it and pray for enlightenment we will get lost. This is one way in which we are not immune, we can drift from the word and allow it to wither away in us.

To resist or keep from drifting away from the word once we have heard it, we should be doer's of the word. Just hearing the word is not enough to keep us from drifting away from it's truth.

Jesus described this phenomenon of drifting from the word by giving the example of the sower of the word. Some seed fell on rocky ground, some among the thorns and some on shallow ground. This parable of the sower describes how we can hear the word, but unless we act on it, we will be carried away by the cares of the world and by Satan's influence upon our commitment to the Lord.

We are responsible for what we heard.  We cannot jut drop it and move to somethings else as if the gospel's were merely human opinions.   We must pay careful attention, therefore to what we have heard so that we do not drift away.  We must take heed to the gospel and not fall by the wayside as the Parable of the Sower. (Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23) The hard ground, the shallow ground, or the thorny soil  Hearing without doing is a dangerous, deceptive position to be in.

We are sinners in the flesh, we might be compelled to disobey, neglect, or ignore signs, wonders, and the word of God. According to scripture, we should hold fast to those things we heard, the Gospel. Jesus described drifting by the Parable of the Sower, as seed sown in hard ground, rocky soil, and thorny ground. Easy prey for letting the Devil to get a foothold.

We are human and living daily among sin, therefor we are subjected to stray if we are not firmly planted in the word daily. We are to trust and believe in the word and be obedient to God's commandments. We are to pray without ceasing for strength to withstand the temptations around us. the parable of the sower is how Jesus explained to his disciples how to live according to the word.  A sower planted seed and some fell in different ground or ways so as not to take root and grow, for reasons of doubt or fear or whatever. but the seed that fell on good solid ground is the seed that prospered and grew and produced more fruit to be used.  When we heard the word and do not understand it, we leave ourselves open for sin to come in and take away what has been planted.  if we are not strong in the word, we let trials and tribulations take away our joy of the word.  We must study the word and pray and stand together as the chosen people of God who are to tell a dying world of the Savior who died for our sins and wants us to live in his kingdom!   the psalms wrote "when we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way, while we do his good will, he abides with us still, and to all who will trust and obey, trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey!"  God promised he would never leave or forsake us, if we would only trust him and ask, he will supply all of our needs.  that is the promise to all who walks in his word and do his will!  Not our will, but His will be done!!  We need to take "self" out of the way . "fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man, for God shall bring every word into judgment with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil".  We were made in his image, to glorify him and do his will. It was not for our sake but for his. We are his children and we are to do his will. that is the only path to heaven!  doing the will of God  through Jesus Christ.

Q3. (Hebrews 2:1) In what ways are we not immune to drifting away from the gospel? According to the author, how can we successfully resist the tendency to drift? How did Jesus describe this phenomenon of "drift" in the Parable of the Sower?

God's word must be ever present, we must constantly be aware of the possibility of slipping away. We cannot simply disregard what God's word says. The parable of the sower teaches of the many ways one can drift. When we hear the word of God we have a choice, either fully accept the word and live by it or we can disregard it. There is no in between.

We are not immune to drifting away from the gospel by not listening to the word, not doing what the word says, not obeying the word in any area of your life. By listening closely to the word and adhering to it closely. He described it through three different types of soil that the seeds were planted in. The rocky soil, the wayside and the good soil. With each soil there is a different circumstance that applies to it. The wayside would be analogy for the cares of the life wiles of the devil because of the birds. Stony soil and thorns apply to the cares of life where we let them take precedence over the word. The good soil is where we actually apply the word to each issue in our lives and we also listen to the word carefully.

We can drift away by not paying attention, treating the gospel like human opinions.

Pay attention. Be careful to obey and believe the gospel.

Seed sown in poor soil that won't bear fruit.

We are no different than the people of the first century, in some ways we are more vulnerable as therefore are a lot more distractions!!!! It's easy with so many voices crying for our attention to listen to all the other voices. It's also easy to forget what we have heard and not embed it in our hearts. This is where the sower comes in as it is all about not letting the word remain in our hearts till it bears fruit.

We are in a fallen world that hates Jesus; still we are fully responsible for what we have read here; this word is God's command not human opinion; otherwise we'll not enter into His rest, not now, nor after physical death.

We pray that His word has fallen on good soil and that we'll share the good news while we are physically in this world!

While we are in the body we will always be vulnerable because the ‘flesh’ is weak. If we put confidence in ourself our confidence is misplaced as it is rooted in pride. The key to resisting temptation is to be “strong in the Lord and the power of His might”, otherwise we are fooling ourselves!
Putting on the full armour of God each day plus regular examination and confession is wise.
