How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission? Some of the results are disputes, disorder management of the household of faith. There is also idle talk, empty chatter, gossip, speculation, and criticism should not come from the lips of believers. Teachers of the law were loveless, legalistic teachers with impure hearts amd emotion. Instruction without love promote legalism. The focus of a believer's life should be on clear and sound doctrine found in the Word of God not human speculation. There has to be unity, love and the truth based on God's word for growth. Doctrinal controversy hurts the spirit of a church because there isn't unity. Not being united effects growth and keeps the church from accomplishing its mission because the focus moves away from God, and instead people begin trying to stress their point of view or side, and lose sight of what they should be doing. dsantos81 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Share Posted January 13, 2009 Instead of doing God's work, certain men, like Paul describs were involved on endless genealogies completly leading people astray from the simple teachings of Jesus, who called us by faith to a new life of love and service. The result? meaningless talk that produces nothing. It takes away the work of Jesus on the cross, while faith in Christ unify the church, this kind of heresy has the opposite result. spazzo47 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Share Posted January 13, 2009 I think there are a lot of things that false doctrines can do a church, and most of them have been listed here already. What I want to add is verse 5, "The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience, and a sincere faith." I was in a church that taught the scriptures well. THe pastor was incredibly intelligent and know what the Bible backwards and forwards. One time I suggested an alternative way of doing something and he looked sick because he saw it as taking God out of that part of the service. He would never be accused of false teaching. What I think he might be accused of was emphasizing the law too much. Of the churches I have served in, this was a church that struggled most with showing love (to each other, and in two years of being there I didn't see them go out of their way to help the community around them) and really being a community. THis pastor lived in fear that a member of the congregation would leave the church over tiny issues. I think those are a couple of signs of teaching the wrong things. And I think that's a bigger problem with churches today than we realize. When all we're getting is law, it's easy for the congregation to begin judging the other members instead of supporting them. It's easy for members to divide into factions that will split the church. The other result of false teaching is the fruit that comes from it. Those who were teaching false doctrines were not concerned with the destructive nature of their teachings. They were more concerned with self as they set themselves apart and elevated themselves above the membership. Leaders who do this affect the growth and stability of the Church, and, in many cases cause an exodus out of the Church. Membership is confused, their anchor pulls away from their strength: Jesus, and those who are lost stay lost. The mission of the Church is undermined. False doctrine results to Confusion and controvery in the Church at Ephesus same as it do in today Churches. The doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a Church in ways of distrubing the unity of the church and destruction of the faith will take place in some followers because of the false teachers , teaching their doctrine. This prevent growth because false teaching open the door for strife, bitterness, quarreling and arguments in the church, causing the church to be lack of sweet peace, and we know that God is not the author of confusion where their is confusion their is no present of God Holy Spirit, His Holy Spirit do not dwell were the temple is unclean and with out the present of God Holy Spirit there is no growth taking place. This keep the Church from it mission when sound doctrine is not being teached. The false teachers having bad fruit and these bad fruit prevents the church from it mission by ways of pride, hypocrisy and questionable ethies, bad fruits. Doctrinal controversy splits the church. It prevents growth because it is founded upon false reasons. The results of false doctrine within the church include: confusion; division; quarrels; people leaving the church; deception; sinful behavior; a focus other than the gospel message; non-effective kingdom building and a bad witness to the community at-large. Doctrinal controversy within a church causes division and prevents unity. A church divided cannot grow, mature and work together. Mary Beth K Posted January 14, 2009 Report Share Posted January 14, 2009 Some of the results of the false doctrine were leadership crises among the elders and leaders of the church; a burning desire for wealth or greed; divisive asceticism from the Jews; destruction of the faith of some; and confusion and controversy that is destroying the unity and growth of the church. Because of the doctrinal controversy, the people were unable to agree with those who opposed them doctrinely, and before long, their unity broke down and they were no longer living in God's loving manner. They got to the point they could no longer love the opposing party. The church lost its effectiveness when God couldn't work in their midst, because the people forgot how to forgive. All of this together blocks God's mercy and grace, and the church is no longer capable of carrying out its mission. God says we must live a life of humble forgiving, remembering our own sinful nature lest we too shall fall. it behooves us to avoid false doctrine entirely, and keep our focus on what is most important. There appeared to be confusion to the members of the body in Ephesus with the false doctrine and as a result of this false doctrine Paul left Timmothy there while he had gone to Macedonia to handle something else that was apparently very important or I'm sure that he would have stayed there in Ephesus to handle himself. Now as a result of the false doctrine being taught there was confussion, and controversies. All of the differnt ideas and thoughts that came from these false teachers were taking the people off of God's work and taking them on rabbit trails if I might say so myself. 2. How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? It causes meaningless arguments and fighting and that defeats the comand of v:5 of Love (Charity) 3. How does it prevent growth? 1Co 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4. How does it keep the church from its mission? There will be a division, strife, controversy and immature christian because there understanding of the law twisted. Doctrinal controversy will result divisions of church, will cause critics. it will prevent growth because false doctrine, teaches different teaching it is not accordance with the word. Paul is stressing that "false doctrine only promotes controversies rather than God's work-- which is by faith" It appears that some believed that God's work was was done by those having a "right to" those born into it (genealogies) and some believed in superstitions (myths). Jews believed in genealogies and Pagans in myths. But those fit for God's work are equipped by God and this through faith in Jesus Christ as administered in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. A church cannot grow because of the divisions false doctrine causes. If the message is corrupted then it stands to reason that the mission would also be corrupted and misguided. People had a desire for wealth. These false teachers had no knowledge of the truth, they had their interpretations of scripture. They were trying to combine the law with grace, therefore they were making it a case of works and not grace. They were full of pride which gave them the air of not listening to anything. There false ways brought confusion and controversey. God says He is not the God of controversey or confusion. How this hurts the spirit of the church - The true Christians could not grow in Christ, but they stayed immature. It was causing the destruction of faith instead of building the faith up. There is so much speculation that know one was learning the true gospel of Christ. The church has no peace or unity. There has to be unity in order for something to grow. With false teaches among them there faith is weakened because some try to make it about works not grace. Keep churches from mission - The mission of any church is to lead people to Christ and His work on Calvary. It is by grace we are saved not by works so that no man can boast. If the church is not bringing people to Christ it is of no value. In a church that has false doctrine all about people will begin to compromise. Results on the teaching of false doctrine in the Ephesian Church are: 1. Some have wandered away from the truth 2. They turned to meaningless talks 3. It causes dis-unity among the believers Doctrinal controversy causes heated arguments and if not treated right away could lead to disunity and strife. It prevents growth because those people who are involved oftentimes have very manipulative spirit and are driven by pride. They would resort to divisive tactics in order to gain audience/followers and when they have gained the trust of those they have lured they will then threaten those in the authority that could lead to division of the body. Immature Christians whose faith was not built on the solid teaching that Christ's blood alone can reconcile us to God and who would therefore entertain meaningless discussions not about the knowledge of the blood of Christ shed for them. False doctrine blinds us to the glorious gospel of our Lord. 2. The spirit of the church is damaged and weakened. 3. False doctrine keeps the church stuck in meaningless controversies which keep Christ out of the minds and hearts of the people. It keeps them from growing in grace. 4. The mission of the church should be to preach the truth of the gospel, grow mature Christians who are sound in the faith and glorify God. God Bless! There cannot be any growth when there is not minds that think and strive for the same purpose and that is to tell others about Jesus Christ. It hurts the spirit of a church by turning people against each other. When someone starts to "preach" false doctrines you will have those who follow the false teacher and those who will stick with the true teachings. This will bring about dissension among the two groups and eventually tear the church apart. Been There! This will keep the church from its mission by the people divinding and those who stay maynot want to be part of a dissected church and will move on. Leaving behind discourged people who will have to pull themselves together with doubt at first. This takes a lot of time. Like I said Been There. The results of false doctrine in the church was pride which fueled disputes. Doctrinal controversy hurts the spirit of the church by causing divisions and promoting arogance. False doctrine does not teach the word of God which is the catalyst for faith. Therefore you you have no maturing of faith. The church does not represent Christ in His purity of love, instead they see chaos and imaturity. This makes the world to be quite content to be on the outside. The results of the teaching of false doctrines was to promote controvery in the congregation rather than doing God's work.
